SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus is said to have coined the phrase, “The only constant in life is change.” Like it or not, change happens to all of us. We either learn to embrace it or fall victim to it. A San Diego pastor was on the verge of becoming one of those victims and almost lost his church. Instead, he found a unique way to embrace the oncoming change and gave his ministry new life. “When I got here, we probably had 150 members with an average attendance of 175, and every year it was smaller and smaller,” says Pastor Bill Jenkins. Jenkins arrived at United Methodist Church in the heart of San Diego in 1999. The church was already weak and failing. Like many inner-city pastors, Jenkins was facing the inevitable, a dwindling congregation slowly dying off and the prospect of the church closing its doors. But in 2005, Pastor Jenkins had a life-changing idea.“I challenged the church to become a ministry center,” adds Jenkins. “And they said, ‘What is a ministry center,’ and I said, ‘I don’t know.’”What Jenkins and his small congregation would come to learn was rather than attending a one-day a week church on Sunday, the building would serve all those in need seven days a week. It now welcomes refugees, immigrants, and asylum seekers. It serves as a food pantry for the hungry, a clothing donation center, and twice a week it’s a free clinic with medical students from U.C.S.D and Cal State San Marcos. No insurance, no problem, no questions asked. “So, when people now ask me, ‘What is a Ministry Center?’ It’s easy for me to say we are the 7-day-a-week church,” says Jenkins. Pastor Jenkins gave his last sermon in the church in 2011, but the chapel is still home to 12 different congregations sharing the word of God. “Today, we have somewhere between 1200 and 2000 people who come through our doors,” says Jenkins proudly. “So, we flipped the church. We flipped it from being a dead and dying church to becoming an integral part of the community.” The church wasn’t alone in its transformation; Pastor Jenkins and his family went through one as well. To date, over 7500 asylum seekers have come through the doors of the Christ Ministry Center. Two of them are 5-year-old Harry and his mother. “You would have a hard time convincing me that he is not an angel in disguise,” Jenkins says with Harry on his lap. Pastor Jenkins and his wife were so taken with this little boy they decided to adopt him. Now along with Harry’s mother, they co-parent. Pastor Jenkins may have retired from preaching, and his church may have closed its doors, but embracing change and having a love for all people will always be his legacy in the eyes of his God. “He said, ‘If you welcome the strangers, I will welcome you into heaven,’” says Jenkins. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A GoFundMe is attempting to raise money for a church that helps homeless teenagers. The Missiongathering Church in North Park was shut down this week after more than two dozen violations were handed to them by the city. In addition to being a shelter, the church also rents out the property as a music and sanctuary venue called “The Irenic.”The City of San Diego says the church never received clearance to do that. The GoFundMe hopes to raise ,000 to fix the violations. 504

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --  It was a normal Thursday night for Rob Perelman. His Uber app was on and he was picking up passengers in San Diego. Then suddenly, things changed and his passengers got violent. You may have seen the video by now - a car crashing in Banker's Hill after the passengers began violently beating the driver.RELATED: Uber driver attacked by drunk passengersFriday, Perelman spoke for the first time about his early-morning attack. He told 10News what happened Friday morning isn't an Uber problem - they were just bad apples. "I've done 4,999 rides with good people," Perelman said. "And one with a bad person."Perelman gave that bad ride sometime after 1:00 a.m. Friday. He picked up the passengers in Banker's Hill and almost immediately realized they were drunk. "My gut feeling said to drive away," he said. "But I'm here to give people rides home, and I said you know what, 'we've all been the drunk guy just trying to get home from the bar, let me give these guys a ride home.'"MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodHe only made it two blocks. "The guy in the back seat starts puking out the window...and if he can't make it two blocks, he's definitely not going to make it 10 minutes," Perelman said. So he pulled over and asked the two to get out of his car. He told 10News that he even tried opening the door for one of them."Still nothing happening, so I say a third time, 'get out of the vehicle or I'm calling 911,'" Perelman said. That's when things got dangerous, and the passenger next to him attacked with a fury of punches."And he's not stopping, he's just beyond the point now," Perelman said. "Probably doesn't know what he's doing, just starts throwing punches at my head, I can't get him to stop. I've got my glasses on, he knocks my glasses off."Perelman says he was left with two options. Take the beating or jump out of the car. He took option two, jumping out of the car while it was still in drive and running to a nearby house to call the police.After the car crashed, the passengers seemed to have a moment of clarity and took off. Perelman says he left behind a shoe, a cell phone and ,000 dollars in damages to his car.Even though he had a bad experience, Perelman says he just wants to get back on the road. "I'm just happy that I was able to get out safely and I've got a few bruises on my head, but I was able to walk away, so I'm lucky that it didn't escalate," Perelman said. "I don't know if he has a gun or knife, I just said let me get out of the car I don't care about the vehicle right now."Since Uber knows who the men are, the plan now is to find them and press charges.10News reached out to Uber about the attack. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 13-year old girl, waiting for her mother to pick her up in Grant Hill, was attacked by a knife-wielding man Friday afternoon.San Diego Police are now using surveillance videos in their search for the suspect, who yanked a gold necklace from the teen's neck before making his getaway near the intersection of 26th and K Street.The girl wasn't hurt, but parents like Elizabeth Alvarado, whose twin 12-year-old daughters walk by that same spot each day, are hoping he doesn't strike again.Alvarado saw surveillance video after the principal of her daughters' school sent parents a link, suggesting they talk to their kids about staying safe.Andy Trakas of Albert Einstein Charter Middle School said the girl who was attacked wasn't one of his students, but there are several other schools in the neighborhood."We decided to be very, very proactive because the safety of our students," said Trakas, adding that all children in the community are a concern."These things can happen anywhere," Trakas said. "They can happen in La Jolla, they can happen in City Heights, they can happen in Del Sur or La Mesa, whatever, but, by being part of the community we can all work together to make sure that our eyes and ears are open so we can find out who this person is and make this place a better, safer community for our kids."Trakas suggested parents talk to their kids about being aware of their surroundings and the importance of staying in groups, not alone, after school. San Diego Police stepped up patrols in Grant Hill after school and are following every lead to catch the thief.The suspect is describe as a black male five feet, eight inches tall with a stocky build who was wearing a plain black hooded sweatshirt, a black cloth covering the lower portion of his face and dark-colored pants. Authorities say the suspect was driving a white Hyundai Elantra  (pictured below.) 1919
