SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's a disease that kills nearly a half million people a year. Mostly children. But painstaking work right here in San Diego is bringing the world ever closer to ending malaria."After you've been doing it for a while you get a little bit tired," said PhD student Madeline Luth, as she works over a microscope, "You're hands get a little bit shaky."She's part of a research team at UC San Diego involved in tedious, precise work."I'm using my syringe here to separate out a single mosquito," she said, "to isolate the thorax which contains all of the malaria parasites." Malaria is a parasite spread by mosquitoes; making the insect the deadliest organism on the planet -second only to humans. Millions of people -primarily in poor parts of the world like Africa- are made sick by the parasite every year. And hundreds of thousands die."What we're trying to do is interrupt the process so the infection never takes hold in your liver.," said Dr. Elizabeth Winzeler, who heads up the research team at the UC San Diego School of Medicine. "So you never develop any symptoms of the disease".Dr. Winzeler says here team has tested more than a half million compounds against the parasite. And is now about to release hundreds of promising mixtures to researchers around the world. "They can take the recipes and the information that we've used and start their own anti-malarial drug development," says Dr. Winzeler.The open door approach with no intellectual property protections, is made possible by billions of dollars in grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. It is also a necessity since the vast majority of those new drugs will save, are too poor to pay for medicine. The venture is purely to save lives. "We're doing this for the good of humanity, says Dr. Winzeler, "And I think everyone is on board with this idea." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It’s a great time to buy a used car. “These deals are once in a lifetime,” said Ivan Drury, a used car expert with Edmunds. Amid the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic, used car prices have been decreasing. According to Bloomberg News, the average price of a used car fell 11.4% from March to April. Drury predicts those prices could continue to fall, as desperate rental car companies start to offload unused inventory. Hertz, which filed for bankruptcy on Friday, has a fleet of about 500,000 vehicles. It’s unclear what their plan is for them, but Drury suspects they will only keep enough to maintain a basic level of service. “That influx of used vehicles will have a dramatic impact on price,” he said. Adding to the supply of used cars, Drury predicts that some drivers who have leased cars will hold on to them for a few more months rather than trade them in. But in several months to a year, he expects that could lead to another flood of used vehicles. “You kind of have a perfect storm for used car values to drop even further,” said Drury. 1090

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It's survival of the fittest once again for gyms and fitness centers across the county as San Diego braces for stricter pandemic-related restrictions that go into effect Saturday.One gym preparing for the big shift is major chain 24 Hour Fitness. While members can't choose from their dozens of locations to workout, seven county locations will be open and offering outdoor equipment to members."We're committed to staying outdoors, staying safe, and the well-being of our members is the priority," said 24 Hour Fitness district manager John Amato.Amato told ABC 10News that member visits will be reservation based with 90-minute windows, minimized to 57 guests at a time.While many prepared for what's to come, others like gym owner Tom Green of Green Speed Training in Eastlake did the opposite.
