A toddler hanging from the roof after crawling out of his bedroom window managed to come away unscathed after falling into a passerby's arms. It's a situation that could have ended tragically if not for the quick actions of a good Samaritan.Police report Jill Harper happened to be driving by the 1300 block of Mills Street in Sandusky, Ohio and saw the toddler hanging from the edge of the roof. She ran over to help.According to the police report, the child fell into her arms, and she brought him inside."When I caught him I remember thinking, 'Oh my God, I caught him,'" said Harper."When I started pounding on the house, that's when he fell, and my hand was pounding.  So when he fell, he kind of came back and hit my arm, and then I caught him."Police said they did not notice any obvious bumps and bruises. The Sandusky Fire Department responded to the scene, looked him over and found no injuries.Kelsie Hellman, the boy's mother's cousin, signed a refusal form, not wanting him to be transported to the hospital, according to police.Sandusky police said the boy is currently in the custody of Summit County Children Services. Hellman told police she is trying to gain custody of the boy, whom she has looked after since he was 3 months old.How did he get out there? Hellman told police she was using the bathroom when the incident happened. She said the boy must have gone around the baby gate she put at the bottom of her stairs, allowing him to get up to his room where the window was left slightly open. The boy then apparently slid through the window, which opens onto the roof.Meanwhile, Sandusky Police Detective Kevin Youskievicz told Scripps station WEWS in Cleveland, he believes the child could have suffered serious injuries if Harper hadn't acted quickly."I can only describe her as a hero, she's a hero," Youskievicz said."Everyone says we need heroes, she is one,"According to the report, Hellman said her husband was fixing the window so the boy could not crawl out of it again. 2079

A student at Equestrian Trails Elementary School in Wellington, Florida nearly died last week from a freak accident. If it weren't for the quick thinking of his teachers, he likely would have.Annalisa Moradi and her 8-year-old Kolston are counting their blessings."Without them, this story would have been different,” Moradi said.Kolston, a third-grader, nearly died last Wednesday, all because of a wooden pencil."He's a hockey player, he's a lacrosse player. I think and worry all day long about what's going to happen to him and little did I know that it would be a pencil that would ultimately almost end his life,” Moradi said.Kolston had just sharpened the pencil and placed it point up in his backpack sleeve."When I went to go sit down, it stabbed me in my artery," Kolston said. The brachial artery in his arm was impaled. Half the pencil sank into the skin just above his armpit."I didn't really feel anything,” he said. And that’s why Kolston accidentally pulled the pencil out when he stood up. With blood pouring everywhere, Kolston immediately ran and told his nearest teachers."We plan for so much with our schools, our crisis response teams. Our first aid training and everything but this was just one of those things that wouldn't be written on a piece of paper to prepare for,” said Elizabeth Richards, one of the teachers who helped Kolston. "It was one one of those freak accidents, we knew that he needed medical attention immediately."Richards actually studied in nursing school before becoming a teacher. That background expertise took over, despite being surrounded by countless children walking around the hallways during class dismissal."We laid him down on the floor, applied continuous pressure to the point,” she said. "Other instincts take over and everything else around us didn't seem to matter. Kolston really is the true hero here. He came right out and got an adult."Teacher Mandi Kapopoulos used her own shirt sleeve create a tourniquet."I pulled my arm out of the sleeve and wrapped it around his arm where it was bleeding,” Kapopoulos said. "He was brave. He wasn't crying. He wasn't screaming."It took paramedics 20 minutes to arrive but the teachers stayed with Kolston the entire time, applying pressure to the wound."As a teacher and as a mother, I would want the same thing for my children, to put the kids first and to try in any situation like that to do what we need to do quickly and calmly," Kapopoulos said.Since the injury happened toward the end of school, Annalisa Moradi was actually at the front of the school waiting to pick her son up. Teachers informed her of what happened and helped take care of the other children while waiting for the ambulance."He was covered in blood and I knew if was obviously very serious," Moradi said. “Without the teachers and the principal, this story would have been different."It wasn’t until Moradi was en route that paramedics told her just how serious the injury was."When we were taking the ride in the ambulance, they told me if these teachers didn't place a tourniquet on his arm, we would have lost him," she said. With two staples in his arm, Kolston went back to school the very next day.His teachers hope this experience can be a lesson for other parents."As a mother of two children myself, knowing how precious life is -- our thanks and gratitude comes everyday when we watch Kolston walk through these hallways," Richards said.Moradi will make sure her son is more careful next time he packs his backpack."Even if you're in a hurry, there's a place for your pencil -- your pencil box! Slow down, take the time to put it in there," she said. "Just be aware of what's going on around you."Medical experts suggest that if you get impaled or stabbed, it’s best to leave the object in until paramedics arrive so that blood can’t escape the wound. As for Kolston, he did not need to get a blood transfusion, thanks to the teachers helping to stop the bleeding. His staples in his arm should be removed in a few days. 4091

A tent being used as a polling location for voters who preferred to not wear a mask in New Hampshire reportedly blew over Tuesday afternoon, injuring a poll worker. The tent for “non-masked voting” was set up outside Bedford High School in Bedford, New Hampshire. Those who wanted to cast their ballot without wearing a mask could do so there, as masks were required inside the school to vote. The weather in New Hampshire Tuesday was cold and windy. A gust blew the tent into the air and it fell over.“If anyone has seen 'The Wizard of Oz' and Dorothy and Toto and everything else, or 'Twister,' yes, unfortunately, we did have an incident,” Bill Klein, town moderator in Bedford, told the New Hampshire Union Leader. The 72-year-old poll worker had a cut on his face and was taken to the hospital to be checked out, according to the Washington Post. Klein said it was a minor injury. The non-masked voting location was moved to a room inside the school that was “safely separated” from masked voters. 1007

A top Republican official in the area President Donald Trump is visiting Tuesday is asking him to wear a mask. The president held a campaign rally event inside an airport hangar in Winston-Salem. The campaign has said masks, hand sanitizer and temperature checks will be provided for attendees.Dave Plyler, the Republican chairman of the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners, told local media he believes Trump should wear a mask while visiting."It's been ordered by the governor," Plyler said of the state's face-covering mandate. "When in Rome, do as the Romans do. When in North Carolina, do as the governor says."Trump took the stage Tuesday evening without a mask on. While some in attendance, especially those seated directly behind Trump, wore masks, the majority did not, according to photos submitted by the Associated Press.North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper’s mask mandate is still in effect. Cooper is a democrat."He (Trump) is a citizen of the United States, but he is also a guest in our county," Plyler told the Winston-Salem Journal. "Without a mask, he could get sick, and he could blame the governor."Plyler is a supporter of the president and is pleased he is making the trip to Winston-Salem. However, he believes if Trump wore a mask, it would set the right example for other people."You know what would be neat? If before he got off the plane if he gave everybody a box of Make America Great Again masks," Plyler told CNN.The president has encouraged wearing masks and keeping socially distant during the pandemic. However, he is rarely seen in one in public. He has worn a mask on a few occasions in public, including during a visit in July to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.North Carolina reported just over 1,000 new coronavirus cases on Monday. The state has reported a total of around 180,000 cases and 2,930 deaths. Forsyth county, where Winston-Salem is located, has reported 6,457 cases and 82 deaths from coronavirus. 1969

A mother in Mesa, Arizona is voicing concern after her child's 4th-grade teacher changed words in the Declaration of Independence, and made the students recite the altered version in class. The teacher at Salk Elementary school crossed out the words "man" and substituted it with "human".The mother, Elizabeth Vaillencourt said the teacher's goal may have been to include women as well, but she went too far in altering a historical document. When Vaillencourt took this concern to school officials, she was initially told she had "hurt the teacher's feelings" by posting about it on social media. The school reacted by removing Vaillencourt's child from that teacher's classroom, and placing them under a different teacher. On Wednesday, Vaillencourt said the superintendent's office contacted her to tell her what the teacher did was against school policy.A Mesa Public Schools spokeswoman says they have policies in place when it comes to school ceremonies which includes reciting the Declaration of Independence. 1030
