SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two San Diego-area pet stores were cited over the weekend for selling puppies in defiance of a prior cease-and-desist order, an animal welfare agency announced Monday.Broadway Puppies in Escondido and Pups & Pets in Santee received citations from the San Diego Humane Society's Humane Law Enforcement department on Saturday, three days after being ordered to suspend all sales of pets until they could prove the animals were obtained from a legitimate source, SDHS officials reported.Approved suppliers include a public animal control agency or shelter, a facility run by a society for the prevention of cruelty to animals, a humane society shelter, or a rescue group that is in a cooperative agreement with at least one private or public shelter.Broadway Puppies was cited on four counts of allegedly violating California's ban on retail sales of dogs, cats and rabbits, and Pups & Pets got citations for two instances of the same offense, according to the Humane Society. 1007

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A group of San Diego City College students are hoping their fundraising efforts will help them get to a national STEM conference in Hawaii later this year. The students are a part of the club called SACNAS (Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science), a chapter of a larger, national organization. The club works with students K-12 to teach them about the career opportunities in STEM. The conference offers research opportunities, tips to improve networking skills and workshops about cutting-edge research. SACNAS takes place in October of 2019 in Honolulu, Hawaii. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As police ramp up their probe, an Otay Mesa dog owner believes his dog may also have been targeted by a pepper spray-wielding mail carrier.The owner of 9-year-old Roscoe didn't want identified, but he tells 10news about two months ago - moments after their mail carrier left - Roscoe started to twitch in pain, which lasted minutes. He say Roscoe was behind a gate and not a threat to the postal carrier. Hours later, the dog's eyes were still red. The dog's owner didn't report it, but says another neighbor complained about a similar occurrence. Both of their homes are just blocks from the Galindo home on Agosto Street."Makes me feel angry and so sad that he's causing so much pain," said Alfonso Galindo.Earlier this week, he spoke to 10news about the strange stains on his patio that prompted him to check his surveillance video. He watched the unbelievable unfold: a postal carrier appearing to hold pepper spray under the mail, as he walked by a metal gate. Behind the gate is his 7-year-old rescue Pupa. At the same time, Pupa begins convulsing for minutes."Sickening. It's scary how nonchalant he is. He's done this before," said Galindo.Galindo says he found nine similar incidents in the recordings on his hard drive, about a month's worth. The Postal Service issued an apology, saying the 'appropriate action' will be taken."That left me with a question. Is this person going to be retrained and put back on my route? That's not going to cut it," said Galindo.There are also more questions about the impact on his two young children, who are constantly touching and hugging Pupa. For months, they've suffered mysterious respiratory issues, requiring frequent trips to the hospital. On Wednesday, both were diagnosed with asthma. Galindo says more tests need to be done, but doctors believe the pepper spray could be the cause, and at the minimum, is an aggravating factor."I'm scared to find out where this could take my children. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A five-week-old sea otter found stranded by strong currents in Alaska is now being cared for by SeaWorld San Diego.SeaWorld announced the sea otter pup, Cinder, was found orphaned near Homer, Alaska, on Aug. 18 before being brought to their care last Saturday. Cinder was underweight and dehydrated when she was taken to the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seaward, Alaska.But the young otter pup learned quickly to feed from a bottle and stabilized before making the trip to San Diego.Since the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has deemed her non-releasable, SeaWorld's Animal Rescue Team and veterinarians have provided constant care in the park's sea otter nursery.SeaWorld says Cinder's condition is good and she's adjusting well to her new home. Staff are also acting as a sort of surrogate mother, helping Cinder learn to swim and groom herself.For the time being, the sea otter will remain in the park's nursery. But soon, she'll be introduced to the park's four other female sea otters — which are also rescued orphaned pups.The park hopes to be able to introduce Cinder to park visitors in the near future. 1133

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Three thieves, one armed with a gun, assaulted a man Monday during a pre-dawn home-invasion robbery in a Bay Terraces-area neighborhood. The victim spotted the trio of burglars inside the house in the 7100 block of Terra Cotta Road about 3:30 a.m., according to San Diego police. One of the intruders pointed a gun at the man while demanding valuables along with his cohorts, Officer Frank Cali said. During the confrontation, at least one of the robbers hit the victim with an unidentified object. After gathering property from inside the residence, the thieves fled in a stolen maroon 2011 Toyota RAV4, California license No. 6UJW830. The victim described the burglars as teenage boys or young men in their late teens or early 20s, dressed in dark clothing. No serious injuries were reported. 820
