WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has ordered lower federal courts in Colorado and New Jersey to reexamine state restrictions on indoor religious services to combat the coronavirus in light of the justices' recent ruling in favor of churches and synagogues in New York.According to NBC News, the judges ruled 6-3 in the case brought by High Plains Harvest Church in Colorado to send back to the lower courts, where the church previously lost.According to the Associated Press, Colorado said it took action and amended a public health order "to remove capacity limits from all houses of worship at all times in response to this Court's recent decisions."In a brief dissent, Justice Elena Kagan wrote that should have settled the issue because "there is no reason to think Colorado will reverse course—and so no reason to think Harvest Church will again face capacity limits."In the New Jersey case, the Supreme Court issued a ruling limiting the state's application of COVID-19 restrictions that apply to religious settings, granting an injunction sought by a Catholic priest at a church in North Caldwell rabbi at a synagogue in Lakewood, NBC News reported. The high court's unsigned decisions Tuesday threw out federal district court rulings that rejected challenges to limits imposed in both states.Last month, the Supreme Court ruled that New York could not enforce certain limits on attendance at churches and synagogues. No justice noted a dissent from the New Jersey decision, the AP reported. 1507
WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. employers added 638,000 jobs in October, a solid pace though far fewer than needed to regain most of the jobs lost to the pandemic recession just as new viral cases are setting record highs. The October gain suggested that a tentative economic recovery may remain intact even in the face of a surging viral outbreak. The report Friday from the Labor Department said the unemployment rate fell to 6.9% from 7.9% in September. Eight months after the virus struck the United States, the economy still has recovered barely half the 22 million jobs that were lost to the pandemic. 606

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Two different doses of a thyroid medication are being recalled because they're not potent enough. The Food and Drug Administration announced Thursday that Acella Pharmaceuticals is voluntarily recalling one lot of 15-milligram and one lot of 120-milligram NP Thyroid?, Thyroid Tablets. The products may have as low as 87% of the labeled amount of levothyroxine, which is used to treat hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid), according to the FDA.The company’s risk statement says patients being treated for hypothyroidism who receive sub potent NP Thyroid may experience symptoms of hypothyroidism, including fatigue, increased sensitivity to cold, constipation, dry skin, puffy face, hair loss, slow heart rate, depression, swelling of the thyroid gland and/or unexplained weight gain or difficulty losing weight.“There is reasonable risk of serious injury in newborn infants or pregnant women with hypothyroidism including early miscarriage, fetal hyperthyroidism, and/or impairments to fetal neural and skeletal development,” wrote Acella. “In elderly patients and patients with underlying cardiac disease toxic cardiac manifestations of hyperthyroidism may occur, such as cardiac pain, palpitations or cardiac arrhythmia.”So far, Acella says it has received four reports of "adverse events" for these lot numbers, possibly related to the recall. The products subject to recall are packed in 100-count bottles. We all know processed foods can be bad for you, but with recent technology, some processed foods may be becoming the healthier alternative. When it comes to living a healthier lifestyle, many of us are willing to jump on the bandwagon of trying healthier alternatives. Right now, there are plenty of options for different types of milk, such as almond milk, soy milk, cashew milk and coconut milk. But, none of those have the kind of protein as the real thing.Innovative food technology is changing that. For example, there is now a milk made out of peas. The pea milk claims to have the same texture and same 9 grams of protein as the real stuff. Adam Lowry, the founder of Ripple says, “I think that technology responsibly applied can be a great way of creating more delicious plant base foods.”The plant-based milk that nutritionists say has the most similar benefits to the real deal is not meant for just vegans and vegetarians.Lowry says, “What I think is a much broader trend is people just wanting to eat more plant base or to eat a little bit less animal protein.”Jessica Crandall is a registered dietitian and says, there is a benefit to plant-based products. However, like any packaged food, she says you should still pay attention to the label.Crandall says, “So it might be a plant-based product but are there any added oils to get that flavor. So, if you are using a chicken nugget product or plant-based protein product again just be aware of the nutrition you need or your child needs that’s important.”Whether you want to live a healthier lifestyle, one thing we learned is that flavor matters. But, remember not to neglect the nutritional benefits food is meant to give us. 1723
WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump said Thursday that he will soon sign an executive order that will establish a commission to promote "patriotic education" in schools. He said it will be called the “1776 Commission,” named after the year the United States was founded.“It will encourage our educators to teach our children about the miracle of American history and make plans to honor the 250th anniversary of our founding,” said Trump during a speech at the National Archive Museum on Constitution Day.Trump also announced that the National Endowment for the Humanities has awarded a grant to support the development of pro-American curriculum that he says celebrates the truth about the nation’s history.“The only path to national unity is through our shared identity as Americans,” said Trump. “That is why it is so urgent that we restore patriotic education to our schools.”During his speech, Trump took aim, again, at The 1619 Project, an initiative developed by The New York Times Magazine in 2019. The project “aims to reframe the country’s history by placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of Black Americans at the very center of our national narrative.”Trump claims The 1619 Project distorts American History and he blames Democrats.“The left has warped, distorted and defiled the American story with deceptions, falsehoods and lies. There is no better example that The New York Times’ totally discredited 1619 Project,” said Trump. “This project rewrites American history to teach our children that we were founded on the principle of oppression, not freedom. Nothing could be further from the truth.”In the past, Trump has threatened to cut funding to public schools that implement The 1619 Project into their curriculum. At the end of his speech, Trump signed a Constitution Day proclamation.“Our youth will be taught to love America with all of their heart and all of their soul. We will save this cherished inheritance for our children, for their children and for every generation to come.” 2040
