SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In some of the most severe cases of COVID-19, doctors are finding it’s not the coronavirus making people critically ill. It’s their own immune system, and a San Diego-based biotech company thinks it has an answer.La Jolla-based INmune Bio announced Tuesday it has FDA approval to begin a Phase 2 clinical trial on its inflammation fighting drug, Quellor. In many of the sickest COVID patients, doctors have noticed their blood is filled with high levels of immune proteins called cytokines. Cytokines act as messengers between cells and the virus can cause them to go haywire, setting off what’s known as a cytokine storm. In a cytokine storm, the body’s immune system starts to attack its own cells and tissues rather than the virus. During the Spanish Flu of 1918, many of the deaths were caused by cytokine storms.“You need to control the cytokine storm to keep patients from getting sick,” said INmune Bio’s CEO Dr. R.J. Tesi. There are several different types of cytokines. A drug undergoing testing in a federal trial with remdesivir targets a cytokine called beta interferon. The San Diego biotech’s drug Quellor suppresses a very specific cytokine called soluble tumor necrosis factor, which Dr. Tesi calls “the master cytokine” because of its role in triggering other immune proteins.Dr. Tesi said this particular cytokine may contribute to another troubling issue with COVID-19: blood clotting.“When they write the history of COVID-19, the clots are going to be the bad guy,” Dr. Tesi said. “These blood clots go off everywhere and they gum up the works. They make it so the lungs can't work. They make it so the kidneys can't work. They make it so the heart is screwed up. Make it so you have strokes.”INmune Bio, which is publicly traded but has just six full-time employees, is hoping its drug can address both the blood clots and the inflammation. The company plans to enroll 366 hospitalized COVID-19 patients for a Phase 2 trial to see if intervention with Quellor can keep people off ventilators and out of the ICU. 2053

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — If you're riding the bus to "Flavortown," there's only one stop in San Diego.Celebrity chef Guy Fieri was spotted at Ocean Beach's Hodad's location alongside owner Shane Hardin, the son of late owner Mike "Bossman" Hardin, on Monday. Pictures from local photographer Jim Grant show the "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives" host mingling with the restaurant's crew and taking photos with fans.City of San Diego spokeswoman Alma Rife said the city had issued a "blanket permit," or filming throughout San Diego, for an untitled Food Network program from March 4-7. A Food Network spokesperson was not able to provide comment as to the nature of the filming.RELATED:Inventive eggs Benedict, dumpling soup highlight San Diego's foodie scene on YelpSeven San Diego burritos among the best in the U.S., ranking saysFieri is no stranger to the OB staple. He stopped by on past episodes of "Triple D," once in 2007 for the "Seaside Eats" episode and then again in 2013 for the episode, "All San Diego, All the Time."Hodad's has also been featured in other Food Network specials, including "Top 10 Burgers" and "With Bacon," the latter of which saw Fieri and other chefs dish on their favorite bacon eats.Fieri's kinship with the local burger joint inspired its own Hodad's burger: The Guido Burger, a pastrami-smothered burger with ketchup, pickles, swiss cheese, grilled onions, and spicy brown mustard.Monday, the chef posted a photo on Twitter of one fan's dedication to the delicious land which he coined: 1522

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Leaders from Mexico and San Diego led a conference on the effort to end human trafficking Tuesday at Liberty Station. Carlos Gonzalez Gutierrez, who recently took over as Mexico's Consul General in San Diego, was the first speaker, followed by San Diego District Attorney Summer Stephan. An estimate by the United Nations reveals that millions of people are living in modern day slavery worldwide. In San Diego, the most common form of human trafficking is for sexual exploitation. The District Attorney's office told 10News that between 3,000 and 7,000 women are sex trafficked through the county each year, with the average age of the victim's being just 16.RELATED: Two teens arrested in San Diego for possible sex trafficking of 12-year-old girl"We have to watch the borders, but we also have to watch in the privacy of the bedrooms of our kids," Stephan said during an interview with 10News.The forum came just a few days after 18 Camp Pendleton Marines and one Navy sailor were arrested, accused of taking part in human trafficking and drug smuggling from Mexico. At least one marine allegedly accepted a ,000 payment to transport undocumented immigrants after they made their way into the United States."It isn't surprising that they would use persons that would appear trustworthy like our military in order to transport either humans or drugs," Stephan said. 1395

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Looking around Barrio Logan, you can't miss the shopping carts, tents and camps belonging to the homeless. Residents of the San Diego neighborhood say the city is turning their community into a "homeless ghetto" - and it's time for it to stop. Tuesday night a group gathered outside the Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, calling on the city to provide "fair distribution of homeless services across San Diego.""It's unbelievable what the mayor and the City Council are doing to this area," said Father John Auther. The priest pointed to a map, asking why a nearly 370 square mile city is putting most of the homeless services in a one-quarter square mile. Father Auther says the concentration of services goes beyond the residents of Barrio Logan. It's bad for the homeless community, too. The area was hit hard by the hepatitis A outbreak.RELATED: Health officials reminding San Diegans about hepatitis A shot "Many of the homeless as we know suffer from addiction problems, alcoholism, mental illness, and what the city has decided to do is put all of them together," Father Auther said. "How will anyone get well?"Right now, city crews are working on a transitional homeless facility in the neighborhood. The facility is going up just 15 feet away from a school playground. A playground closed because of the homeless issue. "We can no longer feel comfortable, feel safe with our students down here on this playground," said Noel Bishop, principal of Our Lady's School San Diego.10News asked a few people in the homeless community two questions: 1. Will the new facility help you? All said yes. 1651
