South Carolina is in mourning after a sheriff's deputy died nearly three weeks after she was wounded in a standoff, the Florence County Sheriff's Office said.Deputy Farrah Turner, who passed away on Monday, was one of seven officers who were shot when authorities tried to serve a search warrant on Oct. 3.Another officer, Sgt. SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) -- These days, the only person who can keep Kevin and Nicole Noar positive is their one-year-old son, Deklan.Otherwise, they are tormented."We can't sleep," Nicole says. "You go through so many different feelings and then the worst part is the morning because you just wake up and you keep feeling like it's still real. You just want to wake up and feel like it didn't happen and it did."The couple is living a nightmare, just days after they thought they'd achieved the American dream. They're staying with family in Solana Beach at a time they thought they'd have closed on their dream home in Carlsbad, where they hoped to create a happy childhood for Deklan."All of this was for him," Nicole says. "The house, with the yard, with schools, and so he could have a sibling."But instead, their roughly 5,000 down payment for that home, 60 percent of the purchase price, is now in the hands of a hacker in an account in Singapore. The money, which came from prior home ownership and inheritance, was supposed to go to lowering the couple's cost-of-living. Nicole is a nurse and Kevin is a chef, so they hoped to make the move more manageable. "It's literally all the money that we had to get this house so that we could have a low enough mortgage payment that we could afford," said Nicole. Nicole says she started receiving fake emails from a hacker posing as employees at her escrow company and her real estate agent, who was away due to a death in the family. Kevin says the emails were sent with duplicate signatures and addresses that appeared as contacts in their phones when clicked. The Noars are taking specific aim at their escrow company, saying an employee e-mailed them official wire instructions via unsecured email. The instructions did not have account numbers, but the Noars say the hacker got that email, duplicated the document, and sent it back with account numbers to a bitcoin exchange. The couple took that document to the bank, which did not catch the bitcoin clue. After the wire, Nicole called the escrow company she thought she had wired the money to, which says should have triggered them since they never actually sent her instructions. "They called back, they called to tell me what time the notary would be here the next day to sign our loan docs," Nicole said. The couple is now weighing their legal options and therefore asked 10News not to identify the escrow company. They have also contacted the FBI.The FBI says Californians are the biggest target of these kinds of scams. Many escrow companies have warnings saying never to accept wire instructions via e-mail, and to instead call. Another strategy is to forward all emails to the escrow agent, not just hit reply without looking at the address. In 2019, 50,000 Californians fell victim to internet financial scams, losing more than 3 million, the highest number in the U.S, according to the bureau. "Typically, escrow will send the wire instructions to the buyer via some sort of secured email, so be very suspicious if you receive (unsecured) wire instructions from an escrow or title company, especially if the escrow or title company is not the same title company or the same escrow company that you're dealing with," said Mark Goldman, a loan officer at C2 Financial. The Noars have set up a GoFundMe to help make up for the loss. 3366

Spring Valley, Calif. (KGTV) - The new Homeless Assistance Resource Team is expanding to battle the growing homeless population, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. The program started in June. Their goal is to connect homeless people with services, like getting a driver's license, food stamps, or healthcare."It's not new to the sheriff's department, but having three full time deputies assigned to the mission is new." Deputy Matthew Faddis said they accompany the myriad of service agencies on their mission into obscure parts of town known to house homeless people.Faddis said it was to ensure the social workers, nurses and other workers' safety, and make them feel comfortable to do their job.Deputy Faddis said the department is working to help more people, "starting out doing this about once a week, we hope to expand that and eventually get the full time team doing this every single day."In Spring Valley, 10News walked with the team down into a concrete canal covered in graffiti. The couple they spoke with was given Hep A shots, hand sanitizer, water, and set up with a ride to get to an office where they can get set up for services tomorrow."If you don't have skills to communicate, if you don't have skills to be there on time, you get a stigma of, 'oh people don't care, there just going through my file anyway,' it doesn't matter." Kristin Kerrick said that's part of the reason why homeless people don't want to talk with the team. She said they are also scared.She's lived out of her car for the past year working to regain stability."There's a place in La Mesa that accepts Section 8 and I qualify, so it's really exciting, it's been so long, it's been a really long time so I'm really thankful," Kerrick said smiling ear to ear.Once under a roof for six months, she said she can try to get her four kids back, "we can see if they are already adopted out, or if they can break through the adoption, and go get the kids back, because I'm able to provide for them now and I'm under a program and she'll talk to me about that so not yet."Stories like hers, fueling the HART team forward. 2135

Some may call this story a coincidence but this Corpus Christi, Texas couple calls it fate.Turns out they were both born on the same day, delivered by the same doctor all while at the same hospital.It was at Bay Area hospital almost 23 years ago that the special deliveries took place.Sierra Molina and Marcus Acuna’s love story is hard to believe but it’s true. Now, this couple wants to make their wedding day just as special as their love story.It was while the two were getting to know each other they learned this love connection was meant to be. That’s because the couple was born on the same day, in the same hospital.“I went and asked my mom. And she was like why what’s wrong? Well, the girl I’m talking to has the same birthday as me. She goes, really? And I go yes. It’s weird,” said Sierra Molina’s fiancee Marcus Acuna. Then they were delivered by the same doctor.“So when our parents told us we were like oh that’s cool let’s pull out the birth certificate and we saw it on there,” said Bride to be Sierra Molina.“It was divinely a shock to find out that there is somebody out there that has the same birthday as me and lives in the same town as me for years as long as we’ve been here,” said Acuna.Their love continued to grow and on Christmas Day in December of 2019, the two got engaged.“When I realized I wanted to marry her, I was like you know, it’s something that I want to do and this makes me happy and she makes me happy,” said Acuna.Since their story is so special the wedding date they chose will be as well.“Now that we are going to have our wedding on our birthday on August 23rd when we turn 23 like that’s so special like this date whether it’s during corona or not we know we wanted to have this date,” said Molina.If you are second-guessing getting married during a pandemic, the couple has some advice for you.“Just do it. It’s not about how big it is or how small it is, if it’s in a backyard, ya know just anything. Six children in Minnesota have been diagnosed with a rare "polio-like" disease since mid-September, state health officials said.Acute flaccid myelitis, known as AFM, affects the body's nervous system -- specifically, the spinal cord -- and can cause paralysis. Unlike polio, there is no vaccine for AFM.Minnesota typically sees less than one case a year, the state Department of Health reported. The disease typically affects children; all the recent cases in Minnesota were in children younger than 10.AFM can develop from a viral infection, although its exact cause is unknown. Symptoms include limb weakness, facial drooping and trouble swallowing or talking. Doctors stress the importance of recognizing the early signs of AFM and seeking care as soon as possible. 776
