SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The son of artists, Steve Maloney says creating art has always been in his DNA."It makes you feel good, making art makes me feel good, really," said Maloney. The project he is most proud of is featured in the documentary Take Me Home Huey, which is being screened during San Diego's GI Film Festival. Produced by Los Angeles filmmakers Alicia H. Brauns and Christine N. Steele, the film documents Maloney's transformation of a Vietnam-era Medevac Huey Helicopter from a wounded warbird, shot down in combat in 1969, into a colorful sculpture with a mission to help veterans recover from Post-Traumatic Stress."What my purpose was to honor those 2.7 million or more American Vietnam veterans that never got a welcome home," said Maloney. Inspiration for the Huey sculpture came from Vietnam veterans themselves. Maloney interviewed several, listening to their stories, and learning what they felt while during the war. "What are you thinking about? Well, number one, probably your girlfriend, maybe your car, mom's apple pie."Maloney and the filmmakers were able to uncover the history of Huey 174, learning the names of surviving crew and two young soldiers killed during the shoot-down.The three survivors were reunited 50 years after their aircraft was shot down. "They almost wanted to hug it, for sure, they wanted to touch the cross, the medevac cross on the top. It just brought out their experiences, which they talked about," said Maloney. "The two pilots had a great feeling of guilt."Maloney says the project has helped Vietnam veterans cope with the traumas of war. Maloney is currently working on a book which will allow him to share more experiences not captured in the film, including the journey of Huey #174 as an art exhibition in various cities throughout the United States and the people he met along the way.The Huey sculpture is on display at the Palm Springs Air Museum. 1919

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- This year, the Drug Enforcement Administration is adding vaping products to the list of what they’ll accept on National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The agency will be accepting prescriptions and vaping products on October 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. According to the agency, nearly 10 million Americans misused controlled prescription drugs in 2018. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that there have been 33 deaths in 24 states and nearly 1,500 lung injuries from vaping in 2019.The agency is treating the events like an outbreak, saying the best advice is to avoid using all forms of E-Cigarettes. The DEA decided to add vaping products to their drug take back event to make sure they're safely removed."If people throw them away, if people dump them down the toilet, if people store them in a drawer, they're still not safe," says DEA Special Agent in Charge Colin Roane." "We're going to permanently get rid of them by collecting them and disposing them."The DEA will accept any kind of cartridges or vaping devices, as long as they don't have lithium-ion powered batteries.Check out the list below of locations you can drop off prescription drugs and vaping products throughout San Diego County: Naval Medical Center San Diego (Balboa) - Active and retired military and staff onlySan Diego Police Department Central Division Naval Base San Diego Navy Exchange on 32nd Street - Active and retired military and staff onlySan Diego District Attorney’s Office - Hall of JusticeCoronado Police DepartmentSan Diego Police Department Southeastern DivisionMarine Corps Recruit DepotSan Diego Sheriff’s Department Lemon Grove station San Diego Police Department Western Division San Diego Probation Juvenile HallSan Diego Police Department Eastern Division Mesa College Campus Police Substation La Mesa Police DepartmentSan Diego Sheriff’s Department Imperial Beach stationChula Vista Public Works CenterEl Cajon Police DepartmentKaiser Permanente Otay Mesa Pharmacy MCAS Miramar Exchange - Active and retired military and staff onlySan Diego Police Department Northern Division Lakeside Sheriff’s Department Sheriff’s Poway Patrol Station San Diego Police Department Northwestern Division Alpine Sheriff’s Station Scripps Encinitas Hospital Escondido Police Station San Diego Sheriff’s Office San MarcosCarlsbad Police Station San Diego Sheriff’s Office VistaTri-City Medical Center Sheriff’s Fallbroo Patrol Station MCB Camp Pendleton - Active and retired military and staff onlyClick here for more locations. 2559

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The statistics for foster kids aging out of the system are grim. According to the National Foster Youth Institute, after reaching the age of 18, 20 percent of the children who were in foster care will become instantly homeless. And there's a less than a 3 percent chance for children who have aged out of foster care to earn a college degree at any point in their life.San Diego nonprofit Just in Time for Foster Youth (JIT) is doing its part to prevent young people here from becoming a statistic. "When you turn 18 a lot of times the foster parents say here is a few dollars and you're on your own, there's no one to help you out," said Ivan Chavez, who was in the foster system from age 7 to 17.Growing up, he didn't have many positive role models. "For me, I never went to high school, and I barely went to middle school."But his journey brought him to JIT, where he now works as a full-time employee. JIT's My First Home (MFH) program helps former foster youth furnish and move into their new living space, creating a foundation for stable housing.Once every month, youth participants involved in the program have the chance to shop at the MFH Distribution Center, providing participants housing essentials for free, such as furniture, electronics, linens, and appliances. "They come in through the front door they're like you have all this stuff, and it's for me? They feel special, you know?" said Chavez.Chavez went from once living on the streets to now pursuing a master's degree. "If I saw my 15-year-old self, I would say everything is going to be ok. You're going to grow up, and you're going to do good and hopefully change people's lives," said Chavez. The distribution center relies on community donations, and they currently need more couches, dining room tables, and dressers. You can learn more about helping the nonprofit on the Just in Time for Foster Youth website. 1914

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Thirty roosters abandoned last month are in need of a new home. The roosters were left at an Escondido feed store on Dec. 28, 2019, with a note from the owner explaining they could no longer take care of them, the San Diego Humane Society says.SDHS says the roosters all appear to be healthy and social with each other and humans.Anyone interested in adopting the roosters can do so through SDHS' Escondido campus. Officials advise potential new owners to check with their city to make sure they are allowed to have a rooster, as some city ordinances prohibit the animals.Anyone who is unable to care for their pets are also advised to take them to a SDHS campus rather than abandoning them. SDHS is an open shelter and will never turn an animal away. 777
