SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Mayor-Elect Todd Gloria Friday announced the selection of the top leadership posts for his incoming mayoral administration."I'm proud to announce the appointments of Paola Avila, Nick Serrano and Jay Goldstone to the Gloria administration," he said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Protesters are planning to assemble Saturday outside the California Democratic Party Convention in San Diego as part of a ``Working People's Day of Action,'' according to a local labor organization.The rally will start outside Convention Center Park at 3:30 p.m., according to the San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council. Workers will advocate for their rights two days before the U.S. Supreme Court is expected to hear a case that could have a dramatic impact on the ability of workers' unions to raise money.The case, Janus v. AFSCME Council 31, will determine whether public sector labor unions are allowed to charge mandatory fees to all workers in their organizations. The case could overturn the Supreme Court's 1977 ruling in Abood v. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Police Department conducted a bicycle and pedestrian safety enforcement operation Monday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Officers focused on enforcing safety laws involving motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians in the Northern Division, which includes Clairemont, Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, La Jolla and University City. They looked for drivers who were speeding, making illegal turns, failing to stop for signs and signals, failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, or any other violations. They also searched for pedestrians who crossed the street illegally or failed to yield to drivers who have the right of way. Pedestrians should cross the street only in marked crosswalks or at intersections. Police have investigated several collisions involving bicyclists and pedestrians during the past three years. In 2013, California had 701 pedestrian deaths, accounting for more than 23 percent of all roadway fatalities. The national average is 15 percent. Police say drivers should follow these safety tips:- Look out for bicyclists, pedestrians and scooter riders, especially at night or in bad weather.- Slow down and be prepared to stop when turning or entering a crosswalk.- Stop at the crosswalk stop line to give drivers in other lanes an opportunity to see, and yield to pedestrians.- Be cautious when backing up.- Share the road with bicyclists.- California law requires at least three feet of clearance when passing a bike rider.- Look for cyclists before opening a car door or pulling out from a parking space.- Yield to cyclists at intersections and as directed by signs and signals.- Watch out for bike riders when making turns.Tips for pedestrians:- Cross at crosswalks or intersections, and obey signs and signals.- Walk facing traffic.- Don't text or talk on a cell phone while walking.- Make eye contact with drivers as they approach.- Wear bright clothing during the day and reflective materials, or use a flashlight, at night.- Look left-right-left before crossing a street.Tips for scooter riders:- Wear properly fitted helmets.- Riders are considered vehicle operators; they are required to obey the same rules of the road as other vehicle operators, including obeying traffic signs, signals, and lane markings.- When riding a scooter in the street, cyclists must ride in the same direction as traffic.- When riding at night, scooter riders are required to have a front light and a red reflector to the rear- No passengers are allowed on any scooter. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police Thursday were searching for a suspect who carjacked a 56-year-old man while he was listening to music in a City Heights parking lot.It happened around 9:35 p.m. Wednesday in a parking lot near the intersection of Euclid and University avenues, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said.The victim was listening to music in his red 2013 Nissan Versa sedan when a man walked up to the car, lifted his shirt up and showed that he had a gun in his waistband, Heims said. The suspect then told the 56-year-old man to get out of the car, and the victim complied.The suspect got into the Nissan, which had California license plate 7EKT818, and drove off southbound on Euclid Avenue, the officer said.The suspect was described as a 5-foot-11 Hispanic man in his early 20s who weighed between 150 and 180 pounds. He had a thin mustache and was last seen wearing a white shirt and a blue baseball hat.Anyone with information on the suspect or the whereabouts of the car is asked to call SDPD's robbery division at 619-531-2299. 1051

Cooper and Marine Corps Master Sgt. Eric W. Franklin will be honored as the Military Heroes of the Game.All fans in attendance will receive a free Gulls camouflage hat.Fans can take free military-themed photos in the interactive photo booth on the north concourse, near Section 6, and post them online for a chance to be featured on the arena's video screen during Friday and Saturday's games.Military vehicles will be on display during Saturday's pregame tailgate party, which will be held from 5-7 p.m.Service members and their families can skate with Gulls players following Saturday's game against the Ontario Reign.
