BROOKLYN, N.Y. (KGTV) -- A new study released this July says ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft are actually contributing to heavier traffic. The study, conducted by Schaller?Consulting, found that ride-sharing companies compete mainly with public transportation, walking and biking. So instead of taking a bus or train, customers use services that put more vehicles on the road.The study found that even services like UberPOOL and Lyft Shared Rides, while claiming to reduce traffic, still add mileage to city streets and do not offset the impacts of UberX and Lyft.The shared rides add to traffic because, according to the study, users are switching from non-auto modes of travel like biking.According to the data, the metropolitan areas of Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington D.C. are home to 70 percent of Uber and Lyft trips. It’s not all bad news though. The study also found that ride-share services can help provide support for seniors, people with low incomes and those with disabilities.In addition, the same companies show promise in providing subsidized connections to different forms of public transportation. 1229

BONSALL, Calif. (KGTV) – A man was killed following a DUI-related crash on State Route 76 New Year’s Day, according to the California Highway Patrol. CHP says the head-on crash happened on the SR-76 near Monserate at 3:54 a.m. Tuesday. According to CHP, a 25-year-old man living at Camp Pendleton was driving a Lexus eastbound in the westbound lanes of the 76 when he struck a man riding a motorcycle. The motorcyclist died at the scene. The 25-year-old man was taken to the hospital with minor scratches and later arrested after CHP says he was determined to be under the influence. 592

It is called 'R-22.'R-22 contains chlorine that can deplete the ozone when exposed. This is why it will no longer be manufactured or imported in the United States, starting in 2020. The price has skyrocketed since this announcement.Eble Park Ice Arena in Brookfield, Wisconsin has been using this type of freon since it opened nearly 30 years ago.The facility is owned by the Waukesha County Park System. The county has made about 0,000 in upgrades to this ice rink.Waukesha County Park System Director Duane Grimm said that is a far better deal than switching over to a common chemical used these days, such as ammonia."This will save us money to replace all the chiller plant here we would also have to replace the floor all the piping under the floor," Grimm said. BERLIN — A spacecraft bound for Mercury has swung by Venus, using Earth’s neighbor to adjust its course on the way to the solar system’s smallest and innermost planet. Launched almost two years ago, the European-Japanese probe BepiColombo took a black-and-white snapshot of Venus from a distance of 10,560 miles. The fly-by is the second of nine so-called planetary gravity assists that the spacecraft needs for its seven-year trip to Mercury. BepiColombo will make one more fly-by of Venus and six of Mercury itself to slow down before its arrival in 2025. Researchers hope the BepiColombo mission will help them understand more about Mercury, which is only slightly larger than Earth’s moon and has a massive iron core. 729

BRIGHTON, Colo. -- Ava Breiterman is struggling with her emotions after a traumatic event over the weekend."Her whining and not waiting is a result of what happened on Saturday," said Ava's mother Kelly Breiterman.Five-year-old Ava has level 2 autism. Kelly Breiterman says her daughter has sensory issues that cause Ava to have "meltdowns".Kelly and Ava flew Southwest to Omaha from Denver nearly two weeks ago with no problems. The flight back was a different story.Breiterman says from the time she went to check her bags in the Omaha airport, all the way to when she and her daughter got on the plane, they were told Ava must keep her mask on."I was trying to get her to put her mask back on, she wouldn’t. So the manager came back in and said, 'sorry ma'am, we’re going to have to deboard you because this is a policy and she wasn’t wearing a mask,'" Breiterman said.Breiterman says Southwest employees ignored a doctor's note explaining Ava may have difficulties leaving her mask on because of her illness.Jesse Ogas at Firefly Autism says his organization actually teaches kids with autism to wear a mask. Both he and Breiterman would like to see policy changes."I’m telling you right now some kids aren’t going to wear a mask because of the sensory issues involved in that," Ogas tells Denver7.We asked Southwest Airlines if their policy should be changed, they responded saying "As of July 27, there are no exemptions to Southwest’s face covering requirement."After being kicked off the plane, Breiterman says Southwest offered a voucher for another flight and refused to grab their bags which stayed on the plane to DIA. The next day, the Breiterman's were forced to rent a car and drive 500 miles home.
