SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An El Cajon woman watched in disbelief Sunday night as her Amazon package was stolen by the very people who delivered it. Cheryl Cook broke her ankle over the weekend and ordered a large ice pack off Amazon. She chose same-day delivery so that she could start icing her ankle as soon as possible.Cook was able to track the driver’s location and could see when he had arrived at her home. She says the delivery started off strangely when the driver put the package on the front lawn rather than the porch. He then got back in the car, put his flashers on, and drove a few feet up the street. Moments later, a second person got out of the car and stole the package. “I’m injured, I’m home, I can’t get out my own front door, and then my package is stolen by the guy who dropped it off,” said Cook. She shared the video online and heard similar stories. “I wanted people to know what was going on, there might be other people that have lost packages and wondered where they went, and this was very clear-cut; it went right back in the guy’s car.”In a statement to 10News, Amazon said:“This does not reflect the high standards we have for delivery partners. This individual is no longer delivering Amazon packages, and we have reached out to the customer to make things right.”A spokesperson went on to tell 10News that their Amazon Flex delivery partners are thoroughly vetted through a comprehensive, multi-state criminal background check and a review of their motor vehicle records. They say the person who stole Cook’s package passed their background check and delivered Amazon packages for less than a month. Cook was refunded for the ice pack but says she’ll never get back the time and frustration spent over the matter. 1750

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Alpine residents are bracing for a Public Safety Power Shutoff, as SDG&E monitors the weather conditions.The National Weather Service issued a High Wind Warning Thursday, "winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 60 mph. Local gusts to 75 mph possible near the mountain ridge tops." The warning lasts through Friday afternoon.Neighbors in Alpine are always ready if a fire sparks, “we keep a go bag of important documents and stuff and uh three dogs at this point and we’d be able to take them with us, and we had to do that in the past too." Neighbor Steve Allison said. He's lived in Alpine for 20 years."Well we’ve chosen to evacuate four times, the last time we had no choice, we had to go. The fire burned within 40 feet of the house," he said he was thankful firefighters saved his home last year during the West Fire.Since the West Fire swept through, in July of 2018, he's made some changes to his home, "we have defensible space around our house, we have new vents in our attic they’re supposed to keep the embers out of the attic."SDG&E reports areas of Alpine, Descanso and Pine Valley are in the dark Thursday and won't get power back until Saturday evening at 6 p.m, due to the Public Safety Power Shutoff. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - According to the San Diego Association of Governments, the unemployment rate in San Diego County was just under 16% at the end of June. The good news is that number is down from the 25% unemployment in May. Still, more than 250,000 San Diegans are unemployed, and many are hurting financially. However, ABC 10News did discover a select group that plans for unforeseen events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, and they seem to be doing just fine. What's their secret? FIRE.FIRE stands for Financial Independence Retire Early. We profiled this group back in November. Last fall, we met Jennifer Mah, a money coach and Community Manager for the San Diego FIRE chapter called Choose-FI before screening a documentary on the subject. And we learned then that many in the Financial Independence community save an average of 40% of their income. So we wanted to know, how are they doing now in the middle of this financial meltdown?"This is the first time in an economic downturn or instability that I've ever had a sense of strength," says Mah over a recent Zoom interview.And Jennifer's not alone. She introduced us to two couples with diverse stories."As soon as quarantine started and I was laid off, that was super scary for me," adds Grace Damazo.But not as scary for Grace and Mike Damazo had they not been part of the Choose-FI community. The Damazo's are a self-described frugal couple in their 30's. Yes, they save more money than many of their peers, but they're also investing in real estate. And before the pandemic hit, they sold one of their cars to cut back on expenses. If they travel, they do it with credit card bonuses, meal prep to save instead of eating out, and if they do, they take advantage of happy hours or specials."And also Grace, cutting my hair," says Mike laughing.From the looks of it, Grace is doing a great job with those clippers, and it all adds up. Mike's position in the Navy is, of course, considered essential. But Grace, a fitness instructor, was laid off at a big box gym and immediately transitioned her clients online. The pandemic only has them doubling down on saving."It was a realization that this was the right path, at least for us, and we need to fast track it," adds Grace.And then there is Wendy and Curtis Mays. A couple in their 50's, with six kids. If you think 50 is too late to start saving, think again. The Mays claim they were in a million-dollar hole just three years ago, and then they found Choose-FI."It's been a long time of having that fear in the back of our minds, and to not have it anymore is just incredible," says a relieved Wendy Mays.Wendy and Curtis sold their house and started renting because they could save more money and pay down debt. Family outings are free when possible, like a trip to the beach. They've paid down so much debt; Wendy was able to quit her full-time job and co-host her own financial consulting business. Curtis says the key is moving past the stigma of debt, talking with others, and figuring out what works best."They're able to do it, and we're able to do it, we just put it in our form with our platform, with our background, with our kids," adds Curtis Mays.Both couples were on what they call a 50-50 plan. 50% of their income goes straight to savings, and 50% to pay down debt. But in these uncertain times, they say they're saving even more because you never know what tomorrow will bring. 3417

Chula Vista also made the list, coming in 123rd place. According to the report, the national unemployment rate has fallen to an 18-year low of just 3.7 percent, while hiring also is up. College graduates are also beginning to see the benefits of the strong job market. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, employers plan to hire 16.6 percent more members from the class of 2019 compared to the previous year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A teen is fighting for his life at Sharp Memorial Hospital after he was hit by a Jeep while riding his bike in Clairemont.According to CHP officers, the accident happened just before 9 p.m. on Saturday. Officers say a Jeep was getting onto the freeway at the Clairemont Mesa Boulevard on-ramp to the 805-N when he hit the teen riding his bike. The driver says he never saw the teen until it was too late. According to officers, the teen was not in a designated cross walk, but near it. The driver of the Jeep stayed on scene, his passenger jumped out to perform CPR while paramedics arrived.The teen suffered life threatening injuries.
