SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Zoo's 7-month-old endangered Matschie’s tree kangaroo has finally emerged from her mother's pouch. The young "joey" has not been named, but is beginning to spend more time outside her mom, Polly, according to zoo officials.“The joey, right now, cannot get enough things in her mouth,” said Breanne Barney, keeper at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “She’s constantly trying to eat leaves, greens, various vegetables, corn—even chewing on moms’ ears, tail, hands and feet!”The little kangaroo doesn't stray far from her mom though, as she learns to climb and maneuver outside of the pouch, the zoo says.Matschie’s tree kangaroos have an estimated gestation period of about 45 days and are about the size of a jelly bean when born. Once born, they crawl back into their mom's pouch and attach to a nipple to gain nourishment and grow. Tree kangaroos remain in the pouch for a few months.“Polly is an excellent mother, and consistently grooming her little one,” Barney said. “Due to their small population numbers, this joey provides a spark of hope for the future of this species.”The kangaroos are listed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's list of threatened species. There are less than 2,500 of the kangaroos in their native habitats of Papua New Guinea and the Huon Peninsula.Unfortunately, they are hunted by humans for food and trade, according to the zoo. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego’s elderly population, those 85 and older, is expected to soar by more than 400 percent by 2060, according to new data from the State of California. The data means many more Californians will be faced with helping their parents at the same time they’re trying to stash money away for retirement. 10News spoke with experts to take a look at ways to manage. As the population ages, more and more San Diegans will fall into the sandwich generation. Amrine understands. For a decade, she financially supported her mother’s care, which totaled half a million dollars. She says the bulk of the burden falls on families. “Mostly you'll be paying out of your own pocket. Nursing home fees are expected to reach more than 3,000 per year for a private room by 2035. Both Amrine and Linda Urbina with Golden Care have advice for the sandwich generation: Even if you’re simultaneously helping mom and dad, stay focused on a savings plan and look into your own long-term care options. “Be proactive, talk to a financial planner, the older you get the more they will cost you. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police say possible human remains were discovered in a Fiesta Island fire pit early Thursday.Just after 10:30 a.m., a man on the east side of the island flagged down San Diego Lifeguards after making the grim discovery. Officers responded and sent an image to a forensic anthropologist, who confirmed the remains were possibly human.ABC 10News spoke to the man who made the discovery. Dan Conklin says he was hoping to spend the day on Fiesta Island and was planning to grill some hot dogs when he parked his van near the fire pit. Conklin says he noticed a lot of trash surrounding the pit and some extra wood, so he decided he would stay. When he started cleaning up, he says, he noticed what looked like human remains. "I kept thinking it was a joke, something to do with Halloween, it had to be a mannequin or a dummy or something that you put on your porch or something," said Conklin. Conklin says he flagged down a lifeguard in the bay who then called police. Conklin says when he arrived at the pit, it was still smoldering. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- State lawmakers approved funding to hire an additional 230 employees for California DMVs. The decision comes on the same day they shut down a proposal to audit long wait times at offices throughout the state. DMV officials say they've seen a surge in demand at offices from people getting the new REAL ID License, which you can't do by mail or online. State Assemblymember Phil Ting is spearheading an effort to shorten the wait. He says wait times at some offices were up to seven hours. "We've identified some technological fixes so that people can enter the information," said Ting. "There would be less clerical work."In July, lawmakers added an extra million to the DMV budget. The extra funding would allow them to hire 500 more employees, offer Saturday services and upgrades to some self-service kiosks. Assemblymember Ting got onboard when he had to go to the DMV in San Francisco and saw the line wrapped around the block. "It looked like people were waiting in line for a rock concert," said Ting. "Not for their driver's license."He says another problem was that people were waiting too long to renew.  "People couldn't get appointments before their licenses were expiring," said Ting. "We're asking to send those notices out much further in advance."DMV officials are also rolling out new programs like text message notifications and expanding self-service terminals to 50 grocery stores later this year. Drivers who want to get a REAL ID would still have to go into an office. DMV officials say you can expect to see reduced wait times by the middle of September, but they don't expect what they call "reasonable" wait times until December. They said that means 15 minutes for an appointment and 45 minutes for walk-ins.  1837
