SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police arrested a man Wednesday suspected of robbing a US Bank in North park before causing a major backup on I-5 in the South Bay. According to the FBI, Gustavo Torres, 32, was charged Thursday with one count of robbery. Torres is accused of robbing the US Bank on the 3200 block of University Avenue in North Park on August 7. Shortly after the robbery, San Diego Police were able to track down a suspect matching the bank robber’s description on Interstate 5 near Main Street in Chula Vista. Authorities shut down all lanes of southbound I-5 during the arrest, forcing traffic to a halt. According to the FBI, Torres is due in court for an arraignment on August 9. 696

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are trying to determine what caused a 92-year-old man to crash into the side of a Chollas View home Thursday morning.The crash happened on the 300 block of St. Rita Court, authorities say.The nephew of the woman who lives in the home told 10News no one was home at the time of the crash, but the dogs inside the home were frightened by the incident.RELATED: Car crashes into City Heights home following pursuitThe man was taken to the hospital in unknown condition. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for a suspect after a man died following a fight in downtown San Diego Monday. Police were called to the intersection of 11th Avenue and Market Street just before 6 p.m. Monday. When they arrived, officers found a man suffering from trauma to his upper body. Medics provided life-saving measures and the man, later identified as 56 year-old Kevin Leray Hughes, was taken to the hospital where he later died. According to police, the victim and suspect got into an argument. “The interaction escalated, resulted in the victim’s death,” police say. The suspect, described as a black man in his 20s last seen wearing burgundy pants, a red hooded sweatshirt and black under shirt, fled the scene after the fight. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for a woman suspected of shooting a woman in the Southcrest area Monday morning.San Diego police said officers were called to the 900 block of South 39th Street just after 7 a.m. in response to a person injured in a shooting.Officers arrived to find a woman with a gunshot wound to her chest. She was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center, but her condition is unknown as of 10 a.m.Witnesses told police the suspected shooter, a woman, fled the scene in a silver sedan.Moments after the shooting, the California Highway Patrol received a report of a crash on Interstate 805 near state Route 54 involving the vehicle believed to be driven by the suspected shooter.CHP officials believes the suspected shooter may have been injured in the crash but left the scene.Police are checking to see if the woman sought treatment at any area hospitals. 889

The tweet added, “It is always our goal to keep our communities safe.”Smith had been staying at a motel around the 78 corridor which caused concern for North County community leaders. “I just don't feel good about this situation,” said Melanie Burkholder, candidate for CA State Assembly's 76th District. “This is a very sick individual. He does not need to be roaming the streets,” she said Monday morning.The Orange County District Attorney's Office says Smith claims to have killed three boys and molested 200 others.San Diego County Undersheriff Mike Barnett spoke to ABC10 News on Sunday night. “He liked to be referred to while he was in the state mental hospital as Mr. RTK, which is rape, torture, kill,” he said.It was last Tuesday when he said the CA Department of State Hospitals released Smith from Coalinga psychiatric facility without any restrictions under Megan's law, meaning he is not required to register as a sex offender.Deputies say he's served his time and is free to go where he wants.Before arriving in San Diego, the 59-year-old went to Orange, Corona and Lake Elsinore which sparked outrage in Los Angeles. In an effort to avoid any violence, San Diego deputies did not share his exact location but offered reassurance he was under 24-7 monitoring.The Orange County District Attorney's Office said Monday that its waiting for answers from the Governor’s Office as to why the state released him from the hospital and why the CA Attorney General's Office reportedly revoked his sex offender registration requirement in 2005.Monday, the Attorney General's Office referred ABC10 News to the Department of State Hospitals which said that it couldn't release information because of patient privacy laws. 1889
