Long lines of voters were reported in Ohio and Indiana Tuesday as early voting began in those states. So far, more than 4.5 million ballots have already been cast in the 2020 Presidential Election, according to the U.S. Elections Project.Mail-in, absentee or early in-person voting is already underway in 39 states, according to the Associated Press, with more to follow. In Ohio on Tuesday, hundreds waited outside board offices in Hamilton, Franklin and Cuyahoga counties, which serve voters from the three biggest cities of Cincinnati, Columbus and Cleveland, respectively. Similar lines were reported across Ohio, and they remained long hours after voting started. The U.S. Elections Project has return data for 23 states who are already collecting early votes or mail-in ballots, and shows 4,526,562 ballots have been collected in those states so far. The project is run by a professor at the University of Florida who has tracked voter turnout since 2000.A handful of states report party registration data of the ballots requested and returned. Those seven states account for nearly 1.6 million returned ballots so far. Of those, just over 50 percent of returned ballots are from voters who had registered with the state Democratic party.“I strongly caution that Democrats’ unprecedented high levels of early voting should not be taken as an indicator of the final election results,” Professor Michael McDonald warns. There have been many reports that Democrats tend to be more likely to vote early or by mail. 1522

LONDON — European Union regulators have filed antitrust charges against Amazon, accusing the e-commerce giant of using data to gain an unfair advantage over merchants using its platform. The EU’s executive commission, the bloc’s top antitrust enforcer, said Tuesday that the charges have been sent to the company. The commission said it takes issue with Amazon’s systematic use of non-public business data to avoid “the normal risks of competition and to leverage its dominance” for e-commerce services in France and Germany, the company’s two biggest markets in the EU. Amazon faces a possible fine of up to 10% of its annual worldwide revenue, which could amount to billions of dollars. It rejects the accusations. 724

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Hawthorne-based SpaceX launched a NASA ocean-monitoring satellite into orbit today from Vandenberg Air Force Base in central California. Residents in parts of Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo counties could hear a series of sonic booms following liftoff of the Falcon 9 rocket. Farther south in Los Angeles County, residents might have caught a glimpse of the rocket's smoky trail as it powered the satellite into orbit, then reversed course and returned to Vandenberg for recovery and use in future missions. The launch was scheduled for 9:17 a.m., and SpaceX tweeted a video showing the successful liftoff at 9:19 a.m.At 9:28 a.m., the company tweeted that ``Falcon 9's first stage has landed on Landing Zone 4,'' and deployment of Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich was confirmed at 10:18 a.m.The rocket carries NASA's Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich satellite, which will join a nearly 30-year project to measure global sea-surface height, while also providing atmospheric data that officials say will improve weather forecasts, climate modeling and hurricane tracking. Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich will be joined in the mission in 2025 by a twin satellite dubbed Sentinel-6B.The satellite launched Saturday is named after Freilich, NASA's former Earth Science Division director.Three science instruments aboard the satellite were built by Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena -- the Advanced Microwave Radiometer, the Global Navigation Satellite System-Radio Occultation and the Laser Retroreflector Array. The ocean-monitoring program was developed by the European Space Agency in conjunction with NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. 1690

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A homeless man is facing a murder charge in what authorities say was a random attack on a California father, who was stabbed in the neck as his 5-year-old daughter sat on his lap in a crowded beachside steakhouse.Jamal Jackson, 49, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of 35-year-old Anthony Mele. He was being held in Ventura County jail on a .5 million bail. It was unclear Saturday if he had an attorney to speak on his behalf.Mele and his wife were eating dinner with their daughter Wednesday at Aloha Steakhouse in Ventura. The girl was sitting on her father's lap when prosecutors say Jackson walked up and stabbed Mele in the neck.Prosecutor Richard Simon said patrons and a restaurant employee followed Jackson out of the restaurant, even though he still had the knife. They kept track of him until police arrived and arrested him.Mele was taken to a hospital and died Thursday after being taken off life support."It's horrible," Simon said. "You don't think you're going to be killed when you go out to dinner at a nice restaurant with your family and you didn't do anything."Simon said the two men had not interacted before the attack."He was just sitting there with his daughter in his lap," Simon said. "You're not supposed to die that way."Mele's loved ones started a GoFundMe page to help raise money for a funeral and to support his wife and daughter.Mele's Facebook page was filled with photos of his daughter and said he was a manager at an AT&T store.Police confirmed Saturday that a bystander reported a man who turned out to be Jackson for disruptive behavior several hours before the stabbing.According to the bystander, a man was yelling on the promenade not far from the restaurant about three hours before the attack.Patrol officers were out on other calls so command center staff monitored the man — who turned out to be Jackson — via a pier security camera system for more than 20 minutes before determining he didn't seem to be a threat, police said.Police are asking anyone who spoke with Jackson during that time to contact investigators. The killing prompted the Ventura City Council to increase police patrols in the area and add staff members to monitor security cameras, among other measures."We are extremely disheartened and infuriated by this criminal attack," Mayor Neal Andrews said in a statement. "We will not tolerate this in our community. Nothing is more important than the safety of our visitors, residents and businesses."If convicted, Jackson faces up to 55 years in prison. He has prior convictions for burglary and unlawful sexual intercourse dating back to the 1990s, according to online court records. 2696
