Class at the San Diego Civic Youth Ballet School in Balboa Park, dance is their escape.“I just love it cause it like brings me joy and it can take me to my happy place,” said Renata Scorza-Muniz.Renata has been taking regular ballet classes since she was 2 years old. But in February, her life changed.“It’s stressful, I guess, to be in the hospital,” said Renata.Renata was diagnosed with cancer, causing her to lose her vision and forcing her out of her regular ballet class.That’s when she turned to a class called Ballet for Me.“It’s just so fun to do,” said Renata.Ballet for Me is a tuition-waved class that is designed for kids with unique physical needs. Each student in the class gets paired up with a mentor to help guide them through each movement.“It just makes me so happy when I get to see students feel happy and free in class,” said Kerri DeNies instructor and creator of the class.This dance class helps the kids feel whole again. But it's comic pioneers that he credits for elevating his art form.The founding member of Run DMC has grown up around comics, spending his childhood collecting, drawing, and envisioning himself in a super suit of his own. It's comics that he says taught him As a little kid, all I did was read, draw, and collect comic books. Even though he's the mighty Spider-Man he's trying to figure life out. Then I notice he's a great student, so it made me walk around the hood like, 'what? You sell drugs and I got an 'A.' What?'" McDaniels recalls. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Becky Buckingham is a nurse in the intensive care unit at Kaiser in San Diego. She has cared for patients who have tested positive for COVID19. “I would be lying if I didn’t say it's concerning and every nurse is fearful in going into these patients’ rooms,” Buckingham. “I think every nurse is eventually going to be impacted by these patients and have to take care of a patient under investigation, ruling out if they have it or not, or if they are actually positive.”She said nurses have a wide range of emotions when it comes to the current health crisis.“A lot of nurses that are extremely concerned because maybe they’re pregnant or they have babies at home or they take care of their elderly parents,” Buckingham said. “There’s also been nurses that are like, bring it on. I’ll take what I have to take. This is what I’m here for.” The supply of personal protective equipment (PPE) has been something causing concern among health care workers.Kaiser’s nurses’ union, the United Nurses Associations of California, recently sent a letter to the California Hospital Association, encouraging the state’s hospitals to immediately postpone all elective procedures and nonemergency surgeries, show hospital caregivers greater transparency in the status of PPE supplies, and partner with nurses to “get the right equipment in the right hands at the right time.”In response, the California Hospital Association said they support canceling all but essential elective surgeries and agreed to transparency with health care workers regarding PPEs, “especially as [they] know demand is great and supply is short.”Buckingham believes her hospital has enough PPEs for now, but the future is uncertain.“Kaiser has been more transparent this week with how they are obtaining more PPE, so I know that they have gone overseas and obtained more PPE that we will be getting in May. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California is "getting closer" to issuing guidance on how and when to reopen theme parks across the state during the coronavirus pandemic.Wednesday, Gov. Gavin Newsom said the state is still working on preparing guidance on when and how theme parks across the state can reopen while fighting the spread of COVID-19.“We will make determinations in real-time for theme parks, amusement parks, and the like,” Newsom said. “There’s still many areas where we are open-ended in terms of our negotiation, making progress, and advancing in the same space.”Newsom added the state is “getting closer to concluding when and how to safely reopen those sectors.”Legoland California, Disneyland and California Adventure, Knott’s Berry Farm, Six Flags Magic Mountain, and Universal Studios Hollywood have each been shuttered since mid-March after stay-at-home orders were issued for the state.Downtown Disney and Universal CityWalk have reopened outside their respective theme parks with modifications.SeaWorld San Diego reopened last month on a limited basis, requiring reservations for visitors and limited access to exhibits.
