LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Many beach parking lots remain closed because of the coronavirus pandemic. Members of the Surfrider Foundation of San Diego say someone is making it even harder to find public street parking by illegally painting curbs red.Surfers who frequent La Jolla Shores noticed something was a little off."Me and my friend came here the other day… and we're like, 'What? What the heck?'" surfer, Maddie Sadlier laughed. They say the public parking on Camino Del Collado, a small street that runs parallel to La Jolla Shores Drive suddenly vanished."It's been like this for a really long time, up until recently, it just turned red," surfer Zach Rudy said.It turns out, the red curb on Camino Del Collado is fake and illegal."It's really a problem that somebody took it upon themselves to take away public parking right next to the beach," Kristin Brinner, a volunteer with the Surfrider Foundation San Diego, said. Some parts of the curb are only painted red on top, and there are several splotches of red on the road - clear signs that it was not a professionally painted curb. Brinner says this is the second summer in a row that this small street curb has been illegally painted."I do hope that people realize that this is more than just a simple bucket of paint," Brinner said. "It's vandalism, and it's preventing people from accessing the beach that belong to all of us. For someone to do this and say that 'No you can't access the beach near me,' is a really pretty hateful act, in my opinion."According to San Diego Police, painting a curb red is a misdemeanor crime of vandalism. If caught, a person can be cited or arrested. The Surfrider Foundation does not know who keeps doing this. But they say every summer, as the beach crowds increase, so does the problem."It does seem like it was somebody in this neighborhood that just was maybe sick of outsiders coming in, wanted to claim it as their own street," Rudy said.San Diego Parking Enforcement is aware of the vandalism on Camino Del Collado and is already in the process of getting it repainted. But Brinner says the best way to fix the problem quickly is to be aware."They should document their parking spots they often use, and then they will have proof so they can say 'Hey, this used to be here, and now it's not!' So documentation is part of the solution," Brinner said.If you suspect that a curb has been illegally painted, report it to the police. 2442

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) — Police arrested one person and rearrested another person this week in connection with looting in La Mesa following police protests last month. Both arrests were made without incident and for burglary during an emergency on May 30 during rioting in the East County city, according to La Mesa Police:On June 10, 26-year-old Helen Tewolde was arrested on suspicion of looting Sally’s Beauty Supply on May 30. An anonymous tip was submitted to police after video that appeared to show Tewolde at the scene looting appeared on social media, LMPD said.On June 11, 25-year-old Rey Estrada-Silva was arrested on suspicion of looting the Verizon store and Target in Grossmont Shopping Center on May 30. Estrada-Silva was previously arrested last week on suspicion on looting Play It Again Sports and was out on bail during Thursday's arrest, LMPD said.As night set on May 30, protests outside LMPD's headquarters turned chaotic, after vandals set fires to numerous buildings and vehicles. Looters struck several businesses including Walmart, Target, Vons, and other stores in shopping centers.RELATED: Man charged with having Molotov cocktails at La Mesa protestAuthorities seek suspect in La Mesa gun shop burglary 1238

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The Citizen Public Safety Oversight Task Force of La Mesa met Wednesday virtually, following two high-profile incidents involving the city's police department. The recently formed group is tasked with looking at whether La Mesa needs a police oversight committee and then decide what it will look like. The group's chair, Jamal McRae, realizes they are a temporary task force, but hopes it rolls over to become the permanent commission."We're still trying to educate ourselves as to what our committee will do, as far as, will be able to have subpoena power? Do we want subpoena power? We're still in the research phase." McRae said. "We're trying to determine whether we want to put this on a ballot to have individuals on the city vote on it, or if we wish the city council will just have the final say.McRae points out the idea for the task force came before the controversial incidents involving La Mesa police officers, and before the national calls for police reform following the death of George Floyd."We're a group of individual citizens that got together and wanted to make a change in the community after the Helix High School incident," McRae said. "So we have been running through some ideas for a few years, just among community members."McRae says the group understands the importance of their work and the urgency to complete their tasks. That's why they have scheduled three meetings next month. The meetings are scheduled for July 1, July 8, and July 15.They hope to present a plan and a sense of direction to the city council by the end of July. 1596

LAS VEGAS, Nevada — In the era of the "Me Too" movement and against a backdrop of sexual misconduct in the school district, a YouTube video has some wondering whether a candidate for the Board of Trustees is sending the wrong message on social media. Her video is called "How to Be Sexy."It's been viewed more than a million times, but now it's getting serious scrutiny as the self-described non-traditional candidate is running for school board trustee. Watch the full interview with Danielle Ford in the video player at the end of this story."I initially searched for the videos because I started hearing other employees discussing it and saying they were kind of concerned," said Elena Rodriguez, CCSD Student Services Division. Elena Rodriguez has worked for the district for decades. She's an outspoken advocate for change and accountability and regularly attends and speaks at school board meetings."As difficult as it is for women to climb the ladder of administration and so forth, and the issues that we've had in the past with employees being accused of sexual harassment and discrimination and so forth, I think it sends the wrong message," Rodriguez said.Danielle Ford isn't shying away from her videos, but she does want to explain them. "As far as that particular video and the messaging of sexiness, I very much believe in empowering women to love their bodies and to be proud of who they are."Danielle dropped out of high school when she became pregnant at age 17 and got her G.E.D. She says this video and others posted on her Young Moms Club website are designed to reach out to other teen moms who face the same stigma and challenges she did when she was a CCSD student.Getting that message out is a serious effort for Ford. Drawing from her own personal experience she takes on the meaning of teen motherhood in the TedX talk from 2013."If we can offer support and encouragement to these girls rather than criticism and judgment, then we can all positively affect the lives of over 10 million people."Drawing from her marketing experience, Danielle says she has to be creative to ensure teen moms get her message. "And although I wouldn't use that same tagline and picture if I'm talking to different people, it worked!  Because that video itself has over a million views.  And it brought you here," Ford added.Danielle's message to feel confident and powerful at any age as a woman is strong. But the context of that video ("How to Be Sexy") is how to get and keep a man. Some are questioning if that's a good message to send to young girls. According to Ford, "Girls do want that! We all do! We all want a partner."Though she posted these videos years before knowing she'd run for public office, she stands behind them all. Including a video entitled "Why I Let My 10-Year-Old Daughter Date." But as you'll hear in the video below, that "date" was really just a family outing to Chuck E. Cheese.Ford said, "I feel like it's a really good thing to teach her now what a date is and how to be treated by boys."She also has a video on "How to Get a Boyfriend... It's Seriously Just Like Shopping.""When you watch the videos, the common theme is that we need to empower kids instead of criticizing them for having thoughts or whatever it is," Ford added. But Rodriguez says there's a better way to empower young women. "For example, towards education--higher education--technical schools. There are many other ways to empower women versus just talking about how you can be sexy."Long-time Trustee Carolyn Edwards, who's terming out of the spot Ford is running for, says trustees must live up to a higher standard and that includes social media.Regarding her "How to Be Sexy" video, Danielle told us, "I wouldn't make that video--based on what I've heard--again, but I'm also not going to take it down."In fact, she's got a link to her Young Moms Club videos on her candidate website. "If you want to get something you've never had, you have to elect people that you never have in the past."Here's the full interview with Danielle Ford. 4114
