The collective mourning of a community shaken by a brazen act of violence in a synagogue will continue Tuesday as funerals are held for three of the victims of what the Anti-Defamation League said was the deadliest attack against Jews in US history. On Monday night, blue light washed over the night sky as buildings across Pittsburgh were illuminated in tribute to the 11 worshippers killed Saturday when a gunman stormed the Tree of Life synagogue there. The close-knit community of Squirrel Hill, where the shootings took place, will first bid farewell to brothers Cecil and David Rosenthal and Dr. Jerry Rabinowitz, according to CNN affiliate WTAE.The funerals coincide with a visit from President Donald Trump, who will travel to Pittsburgh Tuesday despite a request from the city's mayor to hold off on visiting. 830
The Broward County Sheriff's deputy who was assigned to be the school resource officer at Stoneman Douglas High School during last week's massacre that left 17 dead resigned this morning after being suspended without pay, Sheriff Scott Israel announced on Thursday. Israel said that Deputy Scot Peterson was outside of the building during the time of the shooting. According to Israel, video evidence suggested that Peterson remained outside for four minutes. The entire mass shooting lasted an estimated six minutes, Israel said.Related story: Parkland shooter Nikolas Cruz recorded during 911 call in Palm Beach County 648
The fossil of a large egg dating from the time of the dinosaurs has been found for the first time on the continent of Antarctica. In addition to its large size and unique location, this discovery is also challenging how scientists think about marine births millions of years ago.The details of the egg and its discovery were published this week in the journal Nature. The egg, measuring 11 inches long and 7 inches wide, was found back in 2011 by Chilean scientists, and sat in Chile’s National Museum of Natural History, labeled only as “The Thing.” David Rubilar-Rogers was one of the scientists who discovered the fossil and works at the museum. He reportedly showed it to every geologist who visited the museum, hoping someone could identify it. Julia Clark from the University of Texas at Austin visited in 2018.“I showed it to her and, after a few minutes, Julia told me it could be a deflated egg!” Rubilar-Rogers said. 933

The first person known to be cured of HIV infection, Timothy Ray Brown, has died. He was 54.Brown was long known as “the Berlin patient” for where his historic treatment took place. He died Tuesday at his home in Palm Springs, California, according to his partner. The cause was a return of the cancer that originally prompted the unusual bone marrow and cell transplants Brown received in 2007 and 2008, which for years seemed to have eliminated both his leukemia and HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.His case inspired more research toward a cure, something that many scientists had thought impossible until his example proved that it was. 645
