SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- America’s Freedom Bell, which has been traveling across the country for years, officially has a permanent home in San Diego.Wednesday, the bell was unveiled at its new home at the Veterans Museum in Balboa Park. Before that, it was kept in a storage facility in between travels.Richard Rovsek, a Rancho Santa Fe resident and founder of the Spirit of Liberty Foundation, drew up a design for the bell on a napkin during a meal. 72 hours later he learned it would become a reality.Rovsek created the bell to give Americans a chance to ring it and honor the men and women who served our nation. Five million Americans have rung the bell so far.“It’s closure for families,” said Rovesek.The bell was cast on June 6, 2013 with full military honors on the 69th anniversary of D-Day. It has traveled to Independence Hall, Arlington Cemetery, Pearl Harbor, Normandy Beach and more. It will continue to travel occasionally, but will forever call San Diego home. On the bell are the timeless words “Honor Our Armed Forces Past, Present and Future.” It includes emblems for every branch of the military and contains 11 pounds of steel from the World Trade Center.Wednesday, the Spirit of Liberty Foundation and The Veterans Museum at Balboa Park also announced the creation of “America’s Patriotic Honor Roll” which will include the names of more than 100 million veterans who have served since 1776. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diegans fled Hurricane Lane's path taking flights Thursday evening from the Hawaiian islands to California.The first time a hurricane will make landfall on the islands since 1992, inspiring fear in vacationers and those who are hunkering down.RELATED: San Diego rescue teams head to Hawaii for Hurricane Lane"Some of the rain would be so loud you couldn’t even talk, you’d be yelling at one another," Steven Bohn said. He moved from San Diego to the big island two years ago for his fiance, who is attending pharmacy school.He said the bands of weather leading up to the brunt of the storm started hitting faster, leaving shorter windows of respite."It looks like it might be coming back pretty soon I don’t think I want to stand out here too long," Bohn said. "The floodwaters have completely destroyed the Bayfront. The downtown road area, there’s no access there whatsoever the cops have blocked that off."He's an occupational therapist and told 10News he was making calls earlier in the day, checking on his clients and ensuring they didn't need medications or help evacuating.He said emergency crews patrolled the area about every 45 minutes, keeping everyone safe. Other signs of disaster preparation were visible in stores, full of bare shelves.Bohn said they're prepared."We’ll be staying indoors," he said. "Closing all the windows and pulling all the shades down in case of the glass."Bohn believes Hawaiians will endure, and said "I’m just hoping that Oahu, Maui, Kawai even the small island of Lanai, they all are going to be okay, and hunker down and get ready for a rough one."In San Diego, passengers sighed a breath of relief as they waited at baggage claim."We have kindergarten starting for my little daughter here on Monday, she’s very excited, and it’s important we made it back," Essam Khouri said.His in-laws are still on Maui. He said their flight was canceled and they're sheltering in place until they can fly back on Saturday.Carolyn Krebs said they made the decision Tuesday, after seeing the latest hurricane path projection, to cut their vacation short."We called Alaska airlines and changed our flight and paid a lot of extra money but at the end of the day it was a good call we’re home safe," Krebs said.Everyone was thankful to be home safe. 2380

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When a baby is born premature, a family’s world can be turned upside down. November is Prematurity Awareness Month. So, in recognition of that, the March of Dimes donated 50 care packages filled with everything from fuzzy socks to crossword puzzles, and tissues to parents who spend countless hours with their babies in the NICU. "Oh, is that funny?" says mom Vanessa holding her newborn. For a mother, anything her newborn does is a little miracle. "So this is our boy Ezekial,” says Vanessa showing off her little miracle. “He was 3 pounds, 10 ounces." But Ezekial is only one of three miracles. There's also sister Eleana, and little Evelyn. Triplets, three little miracles, born nine weeks premature at Sharp Mary Birch. "I spent three and a half weeks upstairs on the fourth floor, admitted. Um, it was hard,” adds Vanessa holding back tears. “I carried the triplets until 31 weeks and three days, and we've been here ever since, I'm going on about 40 days." Forty days and counting in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital. And Vanessa, with a two year old at home already, is here six to nine hours a day. "I come between 10 and 11, and I'll leave about 5 or 6. It just depends. Sometimes it's just hard to leave," says Vanessa. On this day, the March of Dimes is here delivering care packages. A little comfort for parents trying to navigate the emotional roller coaster of life in the NICU. "It's great, the nurses love our babies, and the doctors are amazing,” says Vanessa. “It's just some days are hard because this is what you come to every day. And every day I just want to hear, 'Your babies are ready to go home.'" That day will come, just like it did for Kristina and Mia. "She was born on July 31st, and she was supposed to be born on November 3rd. She was born 1 pound and 9 ounces," says mother Kristina holding her little Mia tight. Mia was 14 weeks premature. "This kind of puts it into perspective of how small she was,” says Kristina showing a picture on her phone. “That's my husband’s finger, and that's her little hand. Her fingers don't even wrap around the tip of his finger." The difficulty of having to leave your baby in the hospital, and the trust that a parent has to have in the nurses who care for them is overwhelming and at the same time, very comforting. “Yes, it is extremely overwhelming, depressing,” says Kristina. “But you bond with these people here and they become family, they really do. That's why I’m back here today to visit my primary nurse. We will always be grateful for everything they did for us here." Mia was part of a March of Dimes study when she was in the NICU at Sharp Mary Birch. Each year more than 22 thousand babies never make it out of the NICU because of complications with premature birth. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - You may be owed part of the million in unclaimed money sitting in city coffers, City of San Diego officials said Tuesday. If you have done business with the city in the past three years, you may be due funds from to ,797. Some of the funds are reimbursement checks sent by the city that were undeliverable based on the address on file. Any check uncashed after 6 months becomes unclaimed. “We want to refund every single dollar of unclaimed money,” said Fanela Espiritu, Disbursements Manager with the Department of Finance. “A simple search is all it takes to verify if you were issued a check that has gone unclaimed. There is no charge to search the data or to file a claim.” There are more than 2,100 accounts, city officials said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A border church and border mosque are calling for a day of unity. A Bi-National Day of Prayer will be held at Friendship Park; a place where families on both sides of the U.S. Mexico border can meet. The group is also releasing a short film to encourage federal leaders to keep Friendship Park open. The film is called “A Prayer Beyond Borders.”“Friendship Park is the only place on the U.S. Mexico border, where families who have been separated by U.S. immigration policy, can come together,” says Dustin Craun with CAIR San Diego. Families “can physically be together.”Worshippers have been holding prayers there every week since 2011. “We can pray together when we can come together. We can break bread together,” says Imam Taha Hassane, with the Islamic Center of San Diego. Worshippers say there have been threats to close Friendship Park, but no action was ever taken. They are hoping their continued presence will show federal leaders they need this space open. “Millions of families in the United States and Mexico have no access to each other at all,” says Craun. “Closing friendship park would close any possibility of them being able to see each other.”First United Methodist Church and the Islamic Center of San Diego are calling for a day of unity for people of all faiths, for the Bi-National Day of Prayer.
