SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— A Poway family is urging people to be aware of a possible new scam that may be luring people away from their homes. One resident says she was almost tricked by a caller who claimed to be an SDG&E employee. A voicemail was left for the Chavez family, saying crews needed to do some work on equipment in the area. It stated, “It requires a helicopter. The helicopter is required from the FAA to have certain properties, like yourself, evacuate the home.”Katharine Chavez says she called the company to confirm. “(They) said let me check your area and came back and said there’s no work planned in your area.”Chavez says she wants to make sure others don’t fall victim to scammers. “It's scary, and you work hard for your stuff,” said Chavez. “To have someone come in and try to take what you work for, or your neighbors, just go out and make your own money.”SDG&E says under FAA regulations they are required to notify residents and evacuate homes for special construction projects, such as transporting a new utility pole by helicopter. The company says you should always ask for SDG&E identification if you have suspicions about a worker coming to your home. 1197

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- While the visible reminders of local wildfires may be gone, San Diego fire officials say what’s left over can still cause a lot of problems especially as the region expects to get rain this weekend.After an intense wildfire happens, the burned vegetation and charred soil forms a water repellant layer that blocks water absorption -- which means the next time it rains, there’s potential for flooding.Cal Fire wants to remind residents to prepare before the rain arrives.Thomas Shoots, a spokesperson for Cal Fire, said, “Anyone near the Valley Fire needs to be prepared for any type of debris or mud flows. They need to have sandbags and the area around their home prepped so that everything looks OK.”In September, the county gave residents free supplies to make sandbags so people could begin their preps for the rainy season.County information on free sandbag availability can be found here.The City of San Diego is also offering sandbags for residents. San Diego (KGTV)- After spending nearly months in the ICU, a local healthcare worker, who tested positive for COVID-19, is sharing his story."At that time, I thought for certain I was going to die."Ezequiel Melendez Jr., also known as Zeke, spent 57 days in the hospital after contracting COVID-19.The Respiratory Care Technician says he's always been an active and healthy person. He did not have any underlying medical conditions. His struggle with coronavirus started in early March with flu-like symptoms."I didn't meet the criteria at the time for COVID testing," says Melendez. "You were supposed temperature of 102; mine was 100. They told me don't go back to work until 24 hours with no symptoms."Melendez says seven days later, his symptoms got worse."Next thing I know, I'm laying on a gurney preparing for intubation with an endotracheal tube."Melendez's girlfriend, Grace Carbajal, who is also a healthcare worker, says it was a challenge seeing him sick."Being a nurse and not being able to be there at the bedside, also being a loved one and not being able to be there for him and with him, was very difficult," says Carbajal.After spending weeks in the hospital, Melendez was released in late May. He says it will be a while until he feels like himself again. He is still under doctors' care and has physical therapy weekly.He also has a message for everyone as the pandemic continues."We need protection and everyone doing their part to wear masks," says Melendez. "I was one who thought it was just something like the flu, maybe exaggerated at the time. But when it happened to me, it was a smack to the face."Melendez says he would like to thank everyone for the support and those who donated to the GoFund Me that was created while he was in the hospital. The funds are being used for his medical expenses and physical therapy sessions. 1863

San Diego (KGTV)- A music teacher at Grossmont High School reached out to the community after students were in need of guitars for the upcoming school year. The students will be practicing distance learning.Music teacher Jeremy Cook says the support has been overwhelming.“The response from the community has been absolutely amazing. I’ve met so many people. I’ve driven across the county picking up the guitars,” says Cooke.Cooke has received 117 guitars for students to practice.“Last year we had upwards of 120 guitar students total,” says Cooke. “There’s a hope to be able to offer guitars to students who aren’t able to take the class.”A couple of weeks ago, Cooke went to pick up a donation from a woman named Pam Anderson in Mission Hills.“I took it back to my car and popped it open. I was flabbergasted at what was inside. It was a 1969 Fender Telecaster.”These guitars range from ,000 to ,000. Cooke says he had to let Anderson know its value.“She said that she appreciated the honesty, and she still wanted to donate the guitar to the school,” says Cooke. “It was her husband’s who passed away. She said she knew he would want the same thing.”The guitar will be used for student performances and in the newly renovated music room when students are allowed back on campus.Cooke says he appreciates all of the donations. As a thank you to Anderson, the teacher has set up a GoFund Me page to help her during the pandemic.Cooke says there is still a need for guitars for the upcoming school year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Morrissey was attacked Saturday night while performing at a concert in San Diego, TMZ reports.The incident happened at San Diego Symphony Hall as the singer prepared for an encore. A concertgoer who rushed onto the stage hit Morrissey, according to TMZ.Seconds later, the singer was ushered off the stage by security at the concert.Video posted on Twitter appears to show more attendees rush onto the stage to fight after the incident.Watch the video below: 490
