SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Authorities are searching for a person suspected of starting a trash can fire that scorched the side of a Normal Heights home early Thursday morning.At around 2 a.m., San Diego Fire-Rescue crews were called to the 3300 block of Meade Avenue in response to a trash can on fire next to a house.Some residents told ABC 10News they heard noises at the trash cans and the saw a fire begin to ignite.Screams from residents apparently scared off a person believed to have sparked the blaze.As fire crews arrived, flames from the trash can burned the side of one house. The fire was quickly knocked down before it could engulf the entire home.ABC 10News learned one person was displaced due to the fire; no injuries were reported.A description of the person suspected of starting the fire was not immediately available.Arson investigators are involved in the fire probe. 889

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As reports surfaced that the Alliance of American Football would suspend all league operations, its teams — and fans — were left in a state of limbo.Fans searching for tickets to the San Diego Fleet's April 14 game at SDCCU Stadium against the Arizona Hotshots were met with a screen reading, "Oh-no! These tickets went fast and we're unable to find more right now."Calls to season ticket lines and links on the team's website went unanswered and returned no results Tuesday. A note was also left on the team's office door at SDCCU Stadium reading, "We're closed for the remainder of the day."According to the team's general manager, Tuesday practice had been canceled, but no further statement on the league's reported decision was given.RELATED: Alliance of American Football to suspend operations immediately, reports sayThe Fleet, as well as the AAF's seven other teams, had played eight of 10 regular season games slated for the league's inaugural season. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Border officials seized nearly two tons of drugs valued at millions of dollars at San Diego and Imperial Valley ports of entry last weekend.Between June 14 and June 16, Customs and Border Protection says more than 2,638 pounds of marijuana, 1093 pounds of methamphetamine, and five pounds of heroin were seized after being discovered inside doors, flooring, and other areas of vehicles and a tractor-trailer.In one instance, agents at the Calexico Port of Entry stopped a 34-year-old driver on Friday and referred the driver to a secondary inspection. There, canine agents made a positive detection and the port's imaging system discovered anomalies inside the vehicles flooring.Agents uncovered 40 packages of methamphetamine hidden in the vehicle.The same day, a tractor-trailer was stopped at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, arriving from Mexico with a shipment listed as "watermelons and cactus." An officer referred the driver to a secondary inspection, where a canine officer alerted agents to a positive detection in pallets of watermelons.Agents found 311 packages of marijuana, worth an estimated ,557,000, intermixed with the fruit.During another incident on June 16, agents at the San Ysidro Port of Entry stopped a 35-year-old man where a secondary inspection revealed 86 packages of methamphetamine, with a street value of 3,700.All drivers were turned over to Homeland Security agents for processing and all vehicles and narcotics were seized by CBP. 1494

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities in California have identified the sailor who died after being struck by a spinning helicopter blade as 32-year-old Lt. James Mazzuchelli.Mazzuchelli was a flight surgeon assigned to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 267, Marine Aircraft Group 39 and was stationed at MCAS Camp Pendleton.Mazzuchelli is from Orange Park, Florida and was previously deployed to Japan.“Lt. James Mazzuchelli was an incredibly talented physician and Sailor,” said Col. Matthew Mowery, commanding officer of MAG-39. “His contagious enthusiasm, motivation, and love for the Marines and Sailors of HMLA-267 and MAG-39 has been evident in the outpouring of grief at his loss and the support being shown to his family and close friends. His willingness to join the Navy and elect to serve faithfully with the Marines should give a sense of pride to all of us who serve our country that we are surrounded by heroes every day. James and his contribution to our Corps will be sorely missed."The sailor died Saturday morning after being hit by the spinning tail rotor blade of a UH-01Y Venom Marine helicopter.The incident is currently under investigation. 1182

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Close to 100 people packed the Sherman Heights community center Friday night.Just about all of them were there to tell city officials to back off their plan to set up a homeless storage facility at Commercial and 20th Streets.The city says the plan is not finalized, but they are in negotiations with leasing the building. “We have a playground is about 15 feet from this building,” said Noel Bishop, the principal at Our Lady’s School. “The reality is it’s just an open invitation for people to come back to this community and start living on the streets again… having people in our neighborhood that might be drug users, not mentally stable.”Jonathan Herrera, senior advisor for homelessness for the city of San Diego, says the site is expected to similar to the one on 16th street. It will be a place for the homeless to store their belongings while they visit clinics, classes or go to job interviews.The city is promising to be a good neighbor, stressing the site will have security 24/7.  There will be loitering, drugs or alcohol allowed, and they will have regular waste pick-ups within a block radius.“We are currently looking at other facilities in beach communities, uptown, mid-city and southeastern San Diego to see if we can provide additional services in those areas as well,” Herrera said. He said there were a lot of concerns raised that they are taking into consideration, but the city plans to move forward in the process and bring the plan to the San Diego Housing Commission on March 9th.“The mayor highlighted that the time to develop universal consensus is over and that effort to develop consensus has caused us action, and that’s no longer tolerable,” Herrera added. 1733
