SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego man thanked lifeguards Thursday for saving his life after he fell from the Ocean Beach pier.Adrian Castillo, 19, was drinking alcohol with his brother and friends in January when he suddenly fell backwards into the cold water.Castillo’s brother called 911 and after nine minutes, lifeguards Marc Brown and Jim Lockwood found him floating face-down in the water.Castillo was technically dead for five minutes.He spent three days in a coma and also suffered pneumonia from the cold water.“I have a scar in the back of my head,” said Castillo. “I have a couple of scars on my chest from grabbing on the poles.”Castillo is now fully recovered.“I’m very grateful,” said Castillo.  “If it wasn’t for them I probably would have been lost out in the ocean for like a month or something.”“We’re happy that you’re back and safe and alive,” Brown said to Castillo. “You have a second chance in life now.”San Diego Lifeguards, Police and city officials want everyone who heads outdoors this summer to be educated on rip current safety, drowning prevention, bonfires and know what they should not bring to our local beaches.The city has created a website to help guide locals and visitors to safety. 1230

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego Police officer and another person were struck by a vehicle along a major Midway District roadway Thursday morning.The officer was responding to a vandalism call at about 4:30 a.m. in the 2900 block of Midway Drive at Rosecrans Street, according to police.The officer was outside of his patrol vehicle and working to detain a suspect when both were struck by a passing SUV. Witnesses say the officer had the suspect pinned down when they were hit."The suspect ran from the officers. While taking the suspect into custody in the street, both were stuck by an oncoming vehicle," SDPD said via a Tweet.The officer is in serious but stable condition. The unidentified officer was spotted on a gurney and being lifted into an ambulance while giving the thumbs up sign. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After serving in the Korean War 67 Years ago, a San Diego veteran is preparing for the trip of a lifetime with Honor Flight San Diego. Chuck Willey says he's looking forward to experiencing the Washington, D.C. memorials with other veterans. "He mentioned about being accepted to the Honor Flight. But said the only problem is I don't have a uniform, and I said oh Chuck, I can help you with that!" said Patricia McKeon Suter, a relative of Willey. She put a call out for help on one of her Facebook groups - Buy Nothing Navajo, San Diego, CA - asking if anyone had a Korean War-era dress. Three days later, a neighbor answered her call."The reason why she really wanted to do it is her grandfather served in the Korean War in the Marines, and she didn't get to honor him, he passed away a while ago, and this was her way of honoring him. It brought tears to my eyes, which it's doing right now," said McKeon Suter.The neighbor found a uniform in Willey's size, pants, and a jacket.Willey's daughter continued the quest on eBay, where someone ultimately donated a hat and tie after learning Willey's story."Overwhelmed, just very, very thankful for all the help," said Mckeon Suter.Willey was also overwhelmed by the generosity of strangers. "I can't believe that people would do that," said Willey.Willey says he is proud of his service and grateful he'll once again be able to wear a uniform for this special occasion. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Almost 2,000 people gathered in San Diego to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Friday at the 38th annual Human Dignity Award breakfast in Mission Valley. “He fought and gave his life not just for African Americans but for everyone,” said Dee Sanford, this year’s honoree. Sanford stared a telecommunications business in 1994, was an adjunct professor at colleges, and created public access television and radio stations. “You don't do it for honor but when someone remembers and acknowledges your work, it’s really a humbling experience,” she said. My father was part of the civil rights movement. He was our king,” said Sanford. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – An emotional sentencing hearing was held downtown Tuesday for a driver behind a fatal Chollas View crash last March.In March, 36-year-old Jacqueline Castillo reportedly had drugs in her system when blew through an intersection in Chollas View, slamming her car into another car, killing 62-year-old Brenda Lee.“I want to put a face to that name. Brenda Doreen Lee was my sister,” said Lee’s brother, Ronnie Lee, as he held her framed photo up for the courtroom and Castillo to see. “You made choices to get loaded. You made choices to drive on a suspended licensed. You made a choice to drive erratically."The crash happened in the early afternoon by an elementary school. Castillo later pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter. “The horrifying images I saw will never be removed from my mind,” said Lee’s son, Myrell Johns. He fought off tears as he described how his family’s life has been destroyed. “I often think about my mother's terrifying thoughts that may have occurred moments before and after the impact of this person's vehicle plowing through my mother's driver side door." Judge Laura Halgren sentenced Castillo to six years in prison. “We're all human but I believe that every mistake doesn't deserve forgiveness,” Johns told the courtroom. 1284
