VIENNA, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) needs to enhance its role in promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy, non-proliferation and fostering nuclear security, a senior Chinese official said here Monday.Global revitalization of nuclear energy has brought more opportunities for the IAEA to play an even larger role in promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy and technology, said Chen Qiufa, head of the Chinese delegation to the IAEA's 54th General Conference opened in Vienna.Chen, also director general of the China Atomic Energy Authority, told the conference that the IAEA should continue to strengthen technical cooperation for sustainable development of nuclear energy, and give heed to opinions of developing countries.On the issue of nuclear safety, Chen said the IAEA should continue to push forward the development of global nuclear safety and security legislation and standard system, to strengthen transfer of knowledge and exchange of experience, popularize and promote nuclear culture so as to increase public confidence in nuclear energy development.With increasing work load of nuclear verification activities, the agency should build its own technical capability while fully cooperating with member states and using their resources to achieve nuclear safeguards targets, he added.Chen pointed out that the IAEA should play an active role in addressing sensitive and hot-spot nuclear issues.He said China always holds that the nuclear conundrum on the Korean Peninsula and in Iran should be resolved through dialogues and negotiations.China also supported the IAEA and its director general to continue to play their due role to push forward the diplomatic settlement of these issues.

SHANGHAI, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- China's intellectual property rights (IPR) authorities Saturday vowed to play a larger role in the global cause of IPR protection while being more responsible to innovators and the public.The State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) Director Tian Lipu made the pledge at a press conference held to recognize the 25th anniversary of Sino-EU cooperation on IPR protection.Tian said that China and the EU, as two major economies with close trade relations, should further co-operate to create a better environment to encourage and protect innovation in the business world.At the event, European Patent Office (EPO) President Benoit Battistelli told Xinhua he was optimistic about the future of IPR protection in China, given the rapid progress being made in the country.Battistelli said relations between the EPO and the SIPO would "continue to be decisive for the successful future development of the patent system on a global level."Commemorations of the anniversary, held at the ongoing Shanghai World Expo, also included a demonstration of a real-world IPR enforcement case in a moot court setting.The EPO started cooperating with China in 1985. The two sides are currently implementing the EU-China IPR2 project utilizing a 16 million Euros budget that runs over four years to 2011.Both the EPO and the SIPO are among the world's five largest patent offices, together with the Japan Patent Office, the Korean IP Office, and the United States Patent and Trademark Office.China has also grown into one of the most important non-EU countries filing patent applications to the EPO, with the number of patents submitted increasing from 163 in 2000 to 1,621 in 2009.

BEIJING, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) - Members from friendship associations of China and Japan on Friday voiced their hope for people-to-people exchanges to help improve strained China-Japan relations after recent disputes.The proposal was launched at a conference held in the Great Hall of the People to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Japan-China Friendship Association (JCFA), a friendly group established on Oct. 1, 1950 with the view to promoting mutual understanding and cooperation between the two peoples and promote bilateral exchanges and trade."Friendly groups should take the 60th anniversary as a new starting point to deepen friendly exchanges between the two countries, especially between the youth, and contribute to the China-Japan strategic relationship of reciprocity," said President of the China-Japan Friendship Association (CJFA) Song Jian. He also spoke highly of the contribution made by the JCFA for the development of China-Japan relations.People-to-people exchanges have always played an important role in the history of bilateral relations. It not only helped the two countries normalize ties but also improve the bilateral relations when they were strained by some issues such as the visits paid by former Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi Junichiro to the Yasukuni Shrine.Regarding the recent friction between the two countries caused by a ship collision, people-to-people exchanges were expected to play a role again.Two Japanese Coast Guard patrol ships and a Chinese trawler collided on Sept. 7 in the waters off the Diaoyu Islands.
