More than three weeks after the Parkland, Florida, school shooting, the White House is expected to unveil some proposals on guns and school safety."The President and White House are going to be laying out more specifics -- it's going to be a series of proposals," White House principal deputy press secretary Raj Shah said on ABC's "This Week."Shah said the proposals will be legislative and administrative and also will include recommendations for states. The White House will also be forming a task force to study the issue, Shah said.Shah avoided answering whether the White House will call for universal background checks, which President Donald Trump has said he would support, and instead spoke about improving the current background check system. The White House backs the "Fix NICS" bill introduced by Sen. John Cornyn, a Texas Republican, and Sen. Chris Murphy, a Connecticut Democrat, which intends to improve the information?going into the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. The White House will also support raising the age for buying some firearms."The President has been clear that he does support raising the age to 21 for purchasing certain firearms," Shah said. The White House is expected to ask states to consider raising the age to buy certain firearms and to recommend that states allow school staff to carry concealed weapons, The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday, citing White House officials who have been briefed on the proposal. The White House also is expected to voice support for legislation that would authorize million a year on school safety provisions, including training for teachers and students on ways to prevent violence.Shah, who would not confirm the Journal's reporting ahead of Sunday night's announcement, did tell ABC that there will be a proposal to harden schools. The administration is already moving ahead with a proposal to ban bump fire stocks, devices that allow semiautomatic weapons to fire at a more rapid rate, as Attorney General Jeff Sessions has vowed to do. The Justice Department has submitted a proposed regulation to the Office of Management and Budget for review to prohibit their sale by classifying them as machine guns under federal law. 2257

MOUNT RUSHMORE NATIONAL MEMORIAL, S.D. (AP) — Speaking to a largely maskless crowd at Mount Rushmore, President Donald Trump says protesters have waged “a merciless campaign to wipe out our history” amid demonstrations against racial injustice and police brutality. The sharp rebuke in a pre-holiday address Friday to mark the nation’s independence follows weeks of nationwide protests following the killing of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis. Some demonstrators have also destroyed or damaged Confederate monuments and statues honoring those who have benefited from slavery. Trump says, “This movement is openly attacking the legacies of every person on Mount Rushmore.""The radical ideology attacking our country advances under the banner of 'social justice.' But in truth, it would demolish both justice and society," Trump said. "They want to silence us. But we will not be silenced."Trump says he will establish a “National Garden of American Heroes,” which he is describing as “a vast outdoor park that will feature the statues of the greatest Americans who ever lived.”Trump made the announcement as he opened the Fourth of July weekend with a speech and fireworks at the iconic Mount Rushmore. He led into the announcement by paying tribute to a litany of American icons, from political figures like Ulysses S. Grant and Frederick Douglass to entertainers like Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra. The executive order released Friday by the White House says the garden will feature statues of several presidents as well as other historic notables, including Davy Crockett, Amelia Earhart, Billy Graham, Harriet Tubman and Orville and Wilbur Wright. 1664

MUNCIE, Ind. -- Muncie area hospitals are on the lookout for a woman accused of pretending to be pregnant to gain access to labor and delivery floors.Ball Memorial Hospital reported they are working with police and have alerted all personnel to be on the lookout for the woman. It is unclear at this time if there is any surveillance video of the woman and the hospital would not say whether they have identified her.Ball Memorial Hospital released the following statement Thursday:“While no related criminal activity has taken place or charges have been filed, hospital police, leadership and team members remain vigilant. The safety and the very best care of patients and guests are always the highest priority.”Community Health North Hospital, which delivers the most babies in Indiana, said it’s critical to run regular drills to make sure no one has access to newborns that shouldn’t.“As soon as a baby is delivered we put identification on a baby which does include a security tag,” said Jamie Phillippe, Director of NICU/PICU/Pediatrics at Community Health North. “Here down in delivery they could have anywhere from 70 to 80 moms and babies.”Phillippe said the maternity and newborn ICU units are locked down at all times and no one that isn’t supposed to be down there gets in but when situations like this arise they make sure to share the information with all staff members so everyone is aware and they pay constant attention to video feeds around the building.  1501
