SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Amazing artwork emerged after looters damaged windows and buildings following the peaceful protests in La Mesa in May. Many of the paintings were removed during restoration. Now, two local organizations are coming together to help artists preserve their pieces.The Preserve Community Art! Program is an initiative put on by the Balboa Art Conservation Center and ARTS, which stands for A Reason to Survive."We thought really hard about what we can do to contribute to the conversation beyond just making a statement of solidarity," says Bianca Garcia with the BACC.The pieces they are trying to preserve emerged from local social justice movements in our community illustrated by local artists."The art that is coming out of the movements, black lives matter, is sitting at the forefront," says James Halliday, Executive Director of ARTS. "We see the murals and writings of those words on public streets; it creates a really interesting dynamic."Halliday says the pieces are important because they capture moments in time and show the generation's demands.The BACC says that it won't just be displayed in the museums because of the uniqueness of the artwork.If there are any local artists interested in preserving their work with the program, they can email program directors at communityarts@bacc.org. 1330

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An Ohio man accused of pepper-spraying 11 San Diego Police officers during a demonstration last month has pleaded not guilty.Denzel Draughn, 28, pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to felony counts of unlawful use of tear gas against a peace officer and 11 felony counts of use of force against a peace officer.On Aug. 28, a group of demonstrators protesting the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisc., marched through downtown San Diego.See Sky10 video of the demonstration below:Police say that as the group neared 9th and E Streets, a vehicle that was following the group failed to stop at red lights. After police stopped the driver, a crowd began to form near the car and officers who pulled the vehicle over.SDPD says that the group ignored demands to back up from the scene, prompting one officer to pull out pepper spray. Police say one person tried to knock the pepper spray out of the officer's hand, forcing the officer to discharge the spray.Several police officers then tried to arrest the person. As the officers were placing the person in custody, a pepper spray canister fell on the ground. Officers say Draughn picked up the canister and sprayed it twice, hitting 11 officers.SDPD says Draughn fled but was later found and arrested.If convicted, Draughn faces probation to 11 years in jail. He was released on 0,000 bail Wednesday evening."Peaceful protest is a time-honored tradition in our country, and now more than ever it’s critical that we protect an individual’s important First Amendment right. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An ash-filled stolen trailer in Miramar contained heartbreak for more than 100 military families in the form of hand-carved model aircraft burned and damaged. Many of the coveted items are simply too far gone from the damages."They are hand-carved, hand-painted and personalized," said John Pineda, who owns Squadron Toys.He says his model aircraft are ordered by service members and veterans - and their loved ones to commemorate service. Many of them are gifts for a retirement or Christmas.Those gifts disappeared overnight, in minutes."We are heartbroken," said Pineda. He showed 10News the surveillance video.Just past 1 a.m. on Nov. 3, a U-Haul truck drives into the parking lot. Five minutes later, you can see it again, this time hauling Pineda's trailer, filled with more than a hundred model aircraft to be shipped out the next morning.The discovery of his trailer missing was followed a week later by a call from the CHP.The trailer was found on fire on a street in Vista. He towed it back Thursday.Pineda looked in the trailer and found about 60 of the models were missing. There were also burned model planes and helicopters. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An East San Diego County military wife whose husband is accused of poisoning her with thallium is facing intensive rehabilitation, according to a GoFundMe account in her name.Race Uto, 27, was arrested in March on suspicion of giving his wife Brigida the heavy metal, which is found in rat poison and ant killers.A search warrant obtained by 10News indicated Brigida Uto had been sick since September 2017 and did not know the cause. She suffered weakness and hair loss, and was eventually near death, according to the warrant.RELATED: East San Diego County man suspected of poisoning his wifeDoctors determined Brigida ingested the Thallium, which was found in ‘extreme levels’ in her system when she was admitted to the hospital.The FBI, NCIS and San Diego County HazMat determined Brigida had been poisoned by someone with access to her food and drinks.Investigators searched the couple’s home in Dulzura and confiscated laptops, a coffee blender, four cups and other electronics.The warrant also shows that Race had an affair while he was deployed in the Navy and that the couple had gone through counseling.RELATED: Warrant reveals troubled marriage in poisoning caseRace told detectives he has no idea how his wife came into contact with the poison. She also said she had no idea who would want to hurt her.Brigida suffered significant nerve damage and doctors are unsure if she will regain feeling in her legs. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A U.S. Marine Corps veteran is spreading the message anyone can do anything they set their mind to.Kionte Storey enlisted with the USMC in 2007. He joined after witnessing the Twin Towers attack in 2001 and wanted to discover himself and push his limits."I did join knowing I was going to go to war." Storey said his second deployment took him to Afghanistan. His team went to investigate a building, ten members went in, leaving him and one other Marine outside."I make two steps in and the IED goes off. It's kinda like a movie or what you would see in video games where everything goes gray, my ears ringing, but it felt like I was hit by a truck."He said he tried to get up but his legs weren't doing what he was asking them to. He lost his right leg in the blast. He propped himself against a wall in the hallway and said he tried to remain calm, focused on the team's safety.Back home, the Semper Fi and America's Fund took care of him, starting with getting a prosthetic leg."Learning how to walk was not the hardest part, it was the easiest part out of my entire experience." Storey said it was the mental game that was most challenging. So he took it head on."I've done more than I think I would have ever done with both my legs, than I've done with one and I've exceeded all my expectations by far." Storey has run marathons, climbed mountains like Kilamanjaro in Tanzania and Vinson Massif in Antartica."It was not only difficult because of the climb itself but but it was a mental break-through that I had that opened a lot of new possibilities of once I got to the summit [of Mt. Vinson]. I was like I can do anything, there is nothing that can stop me at this point." Storey said he hopes his story encourages others facing challenges to keep fighting.The Fund has not left his side, helping Storey buy a house, enroll at Cal State San Marcos, where he's studying Kinesiology, and connect him with Koja, his service dog."He's my best friend and I couldn't see life without him... He's made my life completely worth it."
