NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The 65th Nashville Christmas Parade Organizers have announced that Kid Rock will no longer serve as the Grand Marshal of the Nashville Christmas Parade. The organizers have stated that they believe the Grand Marshal should "personify the spirit of Nashville" and therefore, have invited James Shaw Jr. to hold this honor. Shaw became a hero in the community after stopping a shooting at a local Waffle House earlier this year. This news came after Nashville Mayor David Briley announced he may not participate in the city’s Christmas parade if Kid Rock remained the Grand Marshal. The Mayor’s Office issued a statement Friday, saying “if Kid Rock is still the grand marshal tomorrow, the Mayor is inclined not to participate.” Briley’s statement came just hours after Kid Rock’s appearance on “Fox & Friends,” in which he called Joy Behar a “b----.” “God forbid you say something a little bit wrong, you’re a racist, homophobic, Islamophobic, this that and the other. People need to calm down, get a little less politically correct and I would say love everybody except that Joy Behar b----,” he said. Metro Councilman Freddie O’Connell tweeted he won’t be participating in the event, saying “The choice of Grand Marshal evokes neither the spirit of Christmas nor the inclusivity I think represents the best of Nashville.” 1413

Monday marks the final opportunity for President Donald Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden to deliver their pitches before Election Day — and both candidates are taking full advantage. Both Trump and Biden have packed schedules on Monday and will host several campaign events — most of them concentrated in Midwestern swing states that could prove vital in their electoral maps.Trump will hold a whopping five campaign rallies on Monday — a final 12-hour sprint that will cover four states that he likely needs to carry in order to serve a second term.Trump began the day at 11:45 a.m. ET in Fayetteville, North Carolina — a state he narrowly lost to Hillary Clinton in 2016 and is still in play in 2020. The state is also in the midst of a key Senate race that could determine which party controls the body in the next session.During his speech in North Carolina, Trump decried poll numbers that show him losing in key swing states, calling them "fake." He also attempted to paint Joe Biden and other prominent Democrats as "criminals," citing reports about Biden's son that are based on questionable information.Trump's Monday blitz will also take him to Pennsylvania — the state many analysts say could be the "tipping point" state of the election. Record numbers of Pennsylvanians have already voted in 2020, but state regulations state that many of those ballots cannot be counted until Tuesday — meaning the state likely won't be called until later in the week. Finally, Trump will finish the day in two upper Midwest states that he unexpectedly took in 2016 — and where he will need a similar overperformance if he hopes to win them again in 2020: Wisconsin and Michigan.Trump's rally in Wisconsin will take place in Kenosha — the city that was the sight of unrest early this year following the police shooting of Jacob Blake.Biden will spend the majority of his final day of campaigning in Pennsylvania — underscoring the importance the state will have in the outcome of the election. The former Vice President will hold three events in the state on Monday, including a prime-time event in Pittsburgh alongside pop star Lady Gaga.At an event in Monaca, Pennsylvania — a town just northeast of Pittsburgh — Biden stressed the importance of labor unions in building the middle class, and painted Trump as an aristocrat."He only sees things from (the perspective) of Park Avenue," Biden said.On Sunday, the Trump campaign hit Biden for his planned appearance with Lady Gaga, calling the singer an "anti-fracking activist." Lady Gaga responded to the Trump campaign's release by tweeting at Trump, saying she was living "rent free" in his head. 2671

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Joseph Webster was in his 20s when he was convicted for a first-degree murder he didn't commit. At 41 years old, the father of four is readjusting to his newly granted freedom.Webster was released on Tuesday after a Davidson County judge ruled to vacate his murder conviction. New DNA evidence and key witnesses with different accounts of the incident helped solidify the decision. It's the first time a person was exonerated of murder because of his innocence in Nashville, according to attorney Daniel Horwitz."It's unbelievable but believable," Webster said. "The truth will set you free. I just didn't know when."Webster was sentenced to life in prison 15 years ago for the beating death of Leroy Owens in 1998. Horwitz helped uncover new evidence alongside the Davidson County Criminal Review Unit that points to a different suspect.Webster always maintained his innocence and never wavered from his hope that one day he'd get out of prison."It's a rare entity within the district attorney's office. Wrongful convictions are fairly rare, but they do occur," Horwitz said.In early 2019, Davidson County District Attorney Glenn Funk said he would reopen the case after new testing revealed that Webster's DNA was not found on the murder weapon. The only witness in the case allegedly changed her story several times, and at times the testimony pointed to a different suspect. In late October, Webster's attorney announced that Funk had vacated his sentence after a reinvestigation by the Conviction Review board, which cleared the way for Webster's possible release."The Conviction Review Unit no longer has confidence in the conviction of Mr. Webster," the motion stated. "We recommend Mr. Webster's conviction be vacated and the charges against him dismissed."With the victim's family in the courtroom, the state said there was no other option but to free Webster.Seconds after he could walk free, Webster's mother and children swarmed him with hugs and tears. He said he's been laying low and hanging out with loved ones who helped keep his strength over the years.Webster said there are others in his position without a support system. He eventually wants to his use experience to speak to teenagers about life in prison and to stay out of trouble. In the meantime, he wants to reconnect with society and heal from years of emotional, mental and physical stress."I just want to see the other side, and I just want to be happy and enjoy life," he said.He spent part of his day Thursday trying to get a driver's license with his attorney. Webster wants to rent his own apartment, get a commercial driver's license, and start a trucking business with his children.Horwitz said there are currently no plans to pursue restitution, but he has started a GoFundMe to help raise money for Webster.Money raised above the goal will be donated to the Innocence Project. More than 30 states are reporting increases in opioid related overdoses and those from other drugs during the pandemic, particularly involving fentanyl, according to the American Medical Association. The government has taken steps to curb deaths during the pandemic by allowing for more flexibility in prescribing medications for opioid use disorder and lifting other restrictions on pain medications.Meanwhile, the National Safety Council is calling on businesses to get ready for an increase in substance misuse in the workplace.“Employers not only have a responsibility, they have a call to arms here to make sure as they bring employees back to work, that they are directly addressing their mental health and providing them the resources that they need to be able to navigate,” said Lorraine Martin, President of the National Safety Council. “It’s just as important as the PPE and sanitization for hygiene that we will all need to have when we come back to work.”Martin recognizes mental health and substance misuse are often interconnected. Now, with the additional stress and unrest related to George Floyd’s death on top of COVID-19, people may be self-medicating even more. The National Safety Council put out resources and tools to help businesses help struggling employees, but they believe the most important thing leaders can do is talk about it.“The most mature companies are addressing this head on,” said Martin. “We know that substance misuse is a disease, not a decision, and if you can come at it with that attitude and make sure you create that safe space for your employees, that can make all the difference.”Not addressing substance misuse is a serious threat to worker safety and costs a lot of money in terms of productivity, absenteeism and workers compensation claims. On the other hand, employees that work through these issues with their employer often come out on the other side more loyal and productive. 1937
