SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — SeaWorld San Diego welcomed two dolphin calves into the world within 12 hours of each other this week.The two bottlenose dolphin calves, born Wednesday at 3:50 p.m. and Thursday at 1:14 a.m., and their mothers are doing well, swimming together and bonding, the theme park said in a release.The dolphins have yet to be named.One of the calves was born to Malibu, a 21-year-old dolphin who gave birth at the park in 2009 to a dolphin named Kali, who remains at the park. The other, 16-year-old Maggie, is becoming a mother for the first time."As with any animal birth, the first few days are critical. SeaWorld veterinarians will monitor the mothers and babies around the clock, documenting respirations and nursing frequency," SeaWorld said. SeaWorld says the calves are estimated to weigh about 40 pounds and their genders will be determined in the next few weeks. 891

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Some San Diego salon owners say the regulations released by the state may not be enough to help save their businesses.Like other business owners around San Diego and across California, salon owner Season McKesson has been trying to navigate through the many changes brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.Through the pandemic, she and other business owners have had to deal with closures, implementing safety precautions, and obtaining personal protective equipment.RELATED: New guidance issued for hair/nail salons, barbershops to move outdoorsOn Monday, the state announced updated guidelines for hair salons and barbershops to operate outdoors.McKesson was prepared to reopen her salon to operate outside until she read the regulations thoroughly. According to the state’s guidelines, salons can reopen but they cannot offer any chemical-related treatments and cannot shampoo customers.“At first, I was trying to be optimistic; you know, giving our industry a way out to come back … but after they dropped the bomb that it’s only haircuts. Reality sets in, and there’s absolutely no way people are going to make ends meet,” she said.McKesson told ABC 10News the guidelines cuts what she believes are essential to the salon experience.She added, “You go to a salon for a certain experience and you’re going to sit and get sprayed down in 100-degree weather. There’s no way.”McKesson is also concerned about the space to operate outdoors, saying not many salons have patios and would have to move into parking spaces. She is similarly worried about the cleanliness of working outside.“It’s not sanitary. It’s not a controlled environment; sitting behind a chair is a controlled environment. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some professors at the University of San Diego are using the impeachment inquiry public hearings as a teaching tool.Instead of listening to their professor lecture about constitutional law, students at USD watched history unfold.Sophomore Bryson Patterson says, “Although we are studying war powers now that this has come up, we get to see the constitution in action. So, we get to live it, going on which is pretty cool.”Casey Dominguez, a Political Science Professor, is allowing students to watch the impeachment inquiry hearings during class as part of today’s lesson plan, hoping to help them understand what’s happening.Dominguez adds she hopes her students, “walk away from our class feeling they are competent to figure out what’s going on. And come up with informed opinions about it.”A lesson some of her students say has already left a lasting impression on them. Charlie Young, a Junior adds, “it’s the perfect opportunity to happen in college. Where we have professors to walk us step by step through the process to understand what’s happening and help guide us through the process deeper than what the political ends would tell us.” 1173

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University canceled spring break 2021 on Tuesday night, citing concerns of rising COVID-19 cases. Instead of the traditional nine day break, students will get four "rest and recovery days" scattered throughout the semester. The days will create multiple long weekends for students and faculty. The decision was made during a University Senate meeting. The vote was 44 to 28. The school senate is made up of faculty, staff and student representatives. Within hours of the decision, an online petition gained thousands of signatures from students asking for the school to bring back spring break. In a lengthy email sent to the entire campus, school officials explained the decision was made in an attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19,citing health and safety as the schools top priority. Officials say the rest and recovery days are for no instruction, assignments, deadlines or exams.
