Despite instituting orders limiting large gatherings throughout the state, Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves has invited local lawmakers and other officials to the state governor's mansion for Christmas parties in the coming days, according to Mississippi Today and the Washington Post.According to Mississippi Today, Reeves, a Republican, has issued executive orders that limit indoor gatherings to no more than 10 people, limit outdoor gatherings to 50 people and require the use of masks or facial coverings indoors for 54 of the state's 82 counties. Those orders include Hinds County, home of the state capital of Jackson and the governor's mansion. But despite those orders, Reeves has reportedly sent invitations to state and district elected officials throughout the state to attend three separate Christmas parties at the governor's mansion, including parties for both the state Senate and House of Representatives. While it's not known how many people are invited to each party, it would appear that more than 10 people would be attending. The State House has 122 members, and the Senate has 52 members.Mississippi Today also reports that Reeves attended a fundraiser hosted by a hospital executive last week that included more than 20 guests.Bailey Martin, a spokesperson for the governor, told Mississippi Today that the events will follow Reeves' orders."The Governor and first lady have canceled or delayed many mansion events this year including the 1st Friday Christmas Candlelighters event and their daughter's 16th birthday party, and have only continued with those events that can be conducted safely," Martin said.Reeves' wife, Elee, said on Monday that she would not be opening the governor's mansion for public tours of the Christmas decorations, as she had in years past. 1794

DEL MAR (CNS) - A 3-year-old filly suffered a fatal injury during a morning workout Saturday at the Del Mar.Lovely Lilia pulled up after the workout at about 5 a.m. and veterinarians said the horse could not be saved and was euthanized, according to Mac McBride, Del Mar's director of media.Lovely Lilia was eased in her final race, a mile turf race at Santa Anita Park June 12, which she led at the halfway point.Lovely Lilia made seven starts, winning twice and finishing second once, earning ,551.Del Mar made the safety of people and horses the leading theme of its 81st summer meet which began Friday with no fans in the stands for the first time because of the coronavirus pandemic. The meet's horse and rider safety initiatives amplified measures Del Mar introduced over the last several seasons of racing that led it to being recognized as one the nation's safest racetracks for 2018 and 2019, according to figures from The Jockey Club's Equine Injury Database provided by the track.Del Mar had a rate of 0.79 fatal injuries per 1,000 starts in 2018 and 0.62 in 2019. The national average for track's reporting was 1.68.While there were no racing deaths, there were four training deaths during last year's summer meet and three racing deaths and two in training during the fall meet.Del Mar is continuing its Entry Review Panel of regulatory veterinarians who will oversee the entries of all horses and provide an additional review of each of their medical, training and racing histories. The panel will recommend to the track's stewards that any horse it deems unfit for competition be barred from racing.Del Mar is furthering its adoption of reforms modeled after the International Federation Horseracing Association requirements. Rules surrounding nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories have been enhanced and extended, and additional rules regarding other equine medications have been clarified and codified.Random testing will continue for any horse at Del Mar, including ones readying for, or having just completed, morning workouts.Just as they were last summer, veterinarians are stationed at elevated observation points at the facility to oversee morning workouts and will have the ability -- through communication with outriders -- to remove horses from the racetrack and have them undergo a follow-up soundness examination.Exercise riders and jockeys again will be prohibited from using a riding crop to encourage their horses during morning workouts. The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club created a stakeholder advisory committee last summer represented by trainers, veterinarians, jockeys, racing surfaces maintenance personnel and management that met regularly to discuss safety practices, operations and track surfaces. The committee will also be in session during the 2020 meet."Safety and health will be our focus for the people involved with putting on this year's extraordinary race meet, but we'll also be continuing with our safety reforms for the wellbeing of our riders and horses," Del Mar Thoroughbred Club CEO Joe Harper said before the start of the meet. 3084

Despite not meeting the original requirement of playing a minimum of six games this season, the Big Ten voted to allow Ohio State to participate in the Big Ten Championship Game for December 19.The No. 4-ranked Buckeyes were slated to play their sixth game of the year on Saturday against archrival Michigan, but a coronavirus outbreak prompted the Wolverines to cancel their matchup against OSU. The cancelation was announced on Tuesday. The move leaves No. 12 Indiana out of the title game. The Buckeyes previously defeated Indiana, giving the Hoosiers their lone loss of the season.“The decision was based on a competitive analysis which determined that Ohio State would have advanced to the Big Ten Football Championship Game based on its undefeated record and head-to-head victory over Indiana regardless of a win or loss against Michigan,” the Big Ten said in a statement.Ohio State is slated to take on No. 14 Northwestern in the title game.A huge factor likely came down to Ohio State’s chances of making the coveted four-team College Football Playoff. The CFP uses conference championships as part of its formula in selecting the top four teams in the country. With its loss to Ohio State, Indiana would have been highly unlikely to qualify for the College Football Playoff. The Buckeyes previously had two contests called off due to the coronavirus. Last month, an outbreak among Maryland players and staff prompted the Terrapins to cancel their game against OSU. Two weeks ago, a cluster of cases, including head coach Ryan Day, prompted the Buckeyes to cancel their matchup against Illinois. 1609

DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) - MLB Hall of Famer, Trevor Hoffman, joined joint developers, Zephyr Partners and The Robert Green Company Monday in supporting an initiative that would give San Diegans access to a bluff-top site that has been closed to the public for a century. The plan is to transform a nearly 17-acre site at 3350 Camino Del Mar into a luxury resort with public access to the beach down below."To be able to actually come here and enjoy it, have a glass of wine at one of the restaurants or walking on one of the trails, I'm really looking forward to it," said Del Mar resident of 50 years, KC Vafiadis. The two developers want to create a luxury resort called "Marisol" which would include a hotel with 65 rooms, 31 villas, dining options, gardens, cocktail lounge, spa and access to the beach down below. The plan is a smaller version of the original proposal, which was met with backlash by residents of Solana Beach and Del Mar. They worried it would obstruct ocean views and increase traffic in the area, so the developers downsized the project by 40-percent.The new plan is an alternative to a proposal that was already approved, which would create private, gated estates. The developers now hope to gather enough signatures for a citizen's initiative to put the plan on the ballot next March. They say they're taking into consideration bluff safety and stabilization and have plans for traffic relief as well. The initiative will be filed with the Del Mar Clerk Monday. 1492

Despite unemployment rates in our country falling from a high of 14.7% in April to 6.9% in October, the National Low-Income Housing Coalition estimates more than 10 million Americans will not be able to make their rent payments through next summer due to economic issues caused by the pandemic. The National Low-Income Housing Coalition estimates through next June, 0 billion will be needed to help people stay in their homes. Many states are providing help to renters using leftover CARES Act money. A few weeks ago, Ohio approved 0 million in a second round of funds that counties would allocate to its residents and public organizations based on need. Compare that to states such as Florida, which has distributed 5 million, or Arizona, with 0 million left to spend to help residents. Though the numbers sound large, advocates say it will only make a dent as it is up to the states to decide how much of the leftover money they want to allocate to rent help.“Part of [the problem] is that even before the pandemic, so in February, millions people were already struggling to pay their rent,” said Martha Gomez, a principal researcher with the Urban Institute, a public policy think-tank.According to the National Low-Income Housing Coalition, 18.7 million Americans were struggling to pay rent prior to the pandemic with more than a third of those people, or 7.7 million, spending half of their income on rent each month. Gomez says nothing will help the situation as much as another stimulus package, which Congress has recently said would be its top priority this month.“The protections that are in place now for renters are really important but ultimately an infusion of cash from the federal government to allow other states and local assistance programs to meet the level of need,” said Gomez. In September, the CDC enacted an eviction moratorium that gave renters struggling to pay their monthly due some breathing room. The moratorium allowed landlords to file eviction cases in courts, but prevented law enforcement from carrying out eviction orders. When the moratorium ends on December 31, some activists worry there will be a large number of eviction orders carried out at once.“We may end up on January 1, 2021 with thousands of potential eviction orders,” said Carey DeGenaro, a lawyer with the COVID-19 Eviction Defense Project. She says the CDC’s eviction moratorium is a bandage, as it delays the negative outcome, but is not a solution, as it does not address the problem of lost income. She says using the time you have in your place before the moratorium ends could offer more negotiating opportunities with landlords. She says discussing a rent payback schedule could be a smart course of action. 2734
