SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Despite carefully measured protocols for distance learning and on-campus housing, San Diego State University is continuing to see new cases of coronavirus among students.SDSU ended its first week of the fall semester Friday announcing three new cases of COVID-19. Since the start of the 2020-21 school year, SDSU has reported seven positive cases.The unidentified students all live off-campus and were only on campus to seek testing at the Student Health Services Outdoor COVID-19 Test Collection Booth, university officials said. The three students did not interact with any SDSU employees or spaces outside of the SHS, according to officials."We have quickly identified and are speaking with the individuals known to have been in direct contact with these students. "Further, due to their connection to previously reported positive cases, all of these individuals were already quarantining in compliance with public health guidelines."The campus opened this week to strict safety guidelines and almost all online classes in their effort to prevent the spread of coronavirus. "Our hospitals are getting quite full and staff is getting really stretched.""It's tiring," says Dr. William Tseng, an Internist at Kaiser Permanente Hospitals. "But, as health professionals, we're here to take care of patients."They say this week has been particularly hard, as an influx of people who contracted the virus during the Thanksgiving holiday threatens to overwhelm the system."It gets tough," says Dr. Karrar Ali, an Emergency Room Physician at Sharp Chula Vista. "Now we're starting to make decisions based upon capacity... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — High surf forced the west wall at La Jolla's Children's Pool and Ocean Beach Pier closed Saturday.A high surf advisory was issued for the county's coast from Saturday to Sunday at 4 p.m. Surf is expected to peak Saturday with waves up to 10 feet possible along the county's coastline. Sunday, surf conditions are expected to hold through the day.Beachgoers were warned of strong rip currents and possible beach erosion during the surf event. Lifeguards asked that anyone heading to San Diego's beach hold off on water activities and watch the bluffs until the high surf passes.Because of the surf, San Diego Fire-Rescue lifeguards closed the Ocean Beach Pier on Friday just before 10 a.m. and were expected to keep the pier closed through at least Saturday morning.In La Jolla, lifeguards said the west wall of the Children's Pool was closed to visitors, as waves crashed over the barrier. 916

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Four people who were arrested during a border demonstration in 2018 celebrated a not guilty verdict Monday.Demonstrators gathered downtown Monday to support two clergy members and two female Army combat veterans who were arrested during the "Love Knows No Borders" event in December 2018. Faith leaders at the U.S.-Mexico border near Friendship Park and some 400 people were calling for an end to detaining and deporting immigrants and showing support for asylum seekers.The four arrested argued they were exercising their religious freedom and first amendment right to assemble and speak out against injustice. Combat veteran Brittany Ramos Debarros, who's standing trial, spoke to 10News following the verdict. "Took an oath to protect this constitution and I take that seriously. And what I see all around me is a disregard for what's right. A disregard for people's rights, including the right to protest peacefully on our own land, the land I supposedly defended," Debarros said.But federal agents showed video of the demonstration, arguing there were numerous no trespassing signs and they made numerous demands and warnings to stay out of the restricted areas or face arrest.One demonstrator, who was not in court Monday, was arrested for assaulting an officer at the rally. 1308
