City crews completed a retaining wall and reopened Jimmy Durante Boulevard Wednesday afternoon. The road wasn't originally expected to reopen until June 4, several days after the fair opens on May 31. The cost of cleanup and stabilizing the cliff is expected to cost million. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It’s the largest loss of life in United States Navy history and you can read an award-winning account of it by two San Diego authors. ‘Indianapolis: The True Story of the Worst Sea Disaster in U.S. Naval History and the Fifty-Year Fight to Exonerate an Innocent Man’ is being released as a paperback after the hardcover became a New York Times bestseller. Sara Vladic and Lynn Vincent wrote the book together after researching it for more than 17 years. “It’s so much more than a sinking story and a shark story,” said author Lynn Vincent. Vladic spent nearly two decades interviewing survivors from the sinking USS Indianapolis. “Getting to know these men and their story and heroism and what it took to survive those days is incredible,” added Vladic, “it still teaches us lessons today of what the cost of freedom really is and what we should be remembering.” The book is cinematically written and presents multiple accounts from the men that had to fend off sharks and each other for several days at sea after the heavy cruiser was sank by the Japanese during WWII. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Local nurses are rallying for more protective equipment at our hospitals. 10News spoke with healthcare workers treating patients with coronavirus who say they're terrified for their own safety. ICU nurse, Michael Kennedy, describes what it's like on the front lines of Covid-19 at UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest. "As you can imagine it is kind of chaotic," said Kennedy. "We're basically having to beg for masks."He, like many other health care workers, is raising a sobering flag, saying they do not have enough face masks to protect themselves. Kennedy says they've been instructed to wear bandanas instead. USCD nurses held a rally to fight back against the shortage Friday morning. "We’re already rationing supplies and we are not getting the kind of transparency we need from UCSD, from state and local officials about what we have."It's a problem reported nationwide. The demand for personal protective equipment is soaring past supply. Here in San Diego, 10News has covered stories of the community coming together to fix that problem by donating supplies and even sewing together homemade masks. County Supervisor Greg Cox acknowledged the problem at a press conference Thursday. "We had a problem with the N95 masks that were in short supply," said Cox. Kennedy is now hoping the problem doesn't get even worse. "If we experience a surge tomorrow, would we have the kinds of things we need or would we be wearing trash bags?10News reached out to UCSD who provided the following statement from Michelle Brubaker, Associate Director of Communications and Media:"Currently, UC San Diego Health has sufficient supplies of personal protective equipment, including masks and respirators, to meet the needs for patients and health workers alike.But like all health systems across the region and country, we are pursuing every avenue to diversify and increase our supply and to ensure continuing, effective levels of protection, not just in the moment but for weeks and months to come. These efforts are based upon CDC and World Health Organization guidelines regarding PPE use and are in accordance with the California Department of Public Health, San Diego County Public Health and University of California.PPE is available to nurses for any potential COVID-19 patient. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Inside a mobile machinist shop, the Marine Corps can now print polymer and metal parts on the go.Operated by the 1st Marine Logistics Group, the Expeditionary Manufacturing Shelter is currently at Camp Pendleton. It houses several 3D printers which each serve a specific purpose."Digital manufacturing can be extremely useful in a combat situation or a disaster zone because we can take this shelter and deploy it to anywhere it's needed. We're able to provide parts that are not readily available, and we're able to get our equipment operational faster," said Staff Sgt. Samuel Margarini.Rather than ordering a part and waiting up to a week, the Marines can re-create a part within 24 hours, improving readiness and operational momentum.3D printing new parts is also cheaper and saves resources. "Since implementation we've had a huge impact on different platforms, we've made parts for trucks, humvees, tanks, and some drones," said Margarini.While only being used in training, for now, shelters like this will eventually be deployed where needed by the Marine Corps. 1098
