SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Pilot Robert DeLaurentis touched down this week in San Diego after traveling 26,000 miles in the name of peace.DeLaurentis, known as the peace pilot, flew from the South Pole to the North Pole in a journey that took him to six continents and 22 countries in the name of peace."The mission of the flight is world peace and we're connecting the South Pole and the North Pole, the two places on the planet where peace has always existed and helping to connect everybody in between," DeLaurentis said.His journey to the only two locations on Earth that have never seen war will be chronicled in the upcoming documentary, "Peace Pilot to the Ends of the Earth and Beyond," featuring a collection of interviews, blogging, and observations.DeLaurentis encountered a slew of mechanical issues during his adventure."In fact, when I left Ushuaia for the South Pole I packed up all my personal belongings in a hotel rook with my address I assessed my chances of coming back at about 50%," says DeLaurentis. "Some of the problems we had on the flight included bursting fuel tanks, I was without GPS autopilot, and altitude heading and reference system for five hours."All those issues made worse knew by the coronavirus pandemic when he was forced to quarantine along the way — extending his trip from an intended five months to nine months."For every challenge, there was an opportunity and the pandemic created that for us because I had about a month and a half to reflect on what was happening to really work on my inner process," DeLaurentis said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - President Trump's call for some teachers to be armed is sparking local debate.Linda bought her first handgun three years ago for personal protection. She's a local music teacher at elementary, middle and high schools who applauds the President's idea. "It's a good idea because we're going against violence people doing violent things. I can't protect all 30 of my students with pencils, erasers and rulers," said Linda.RELATED: Trump pushing to 'finally do something' on gunsEric Heins, President of the California Teachers Association, is in town for the state Democratic convention and says schools should not be a war zone. "To try and militarize a student campus by introducing more guns is insane. On a practical level, it wouldn't work," said Heins.He says teachers are simply not trained to deal with shooters armed with assault rifles, trying to figure out who and what to shoot at.RELATED: University in Florida to allow teachers, staff to carry guns through program with sheriff's office"It's a recipe for unintentional disaster," said Heins.But Linda, who owns concealed weapons permits in five states, says teachers can be trained. She's gone through extensive firearms training the last three years."Teachers can be trained to eliminate the threat, to stop a threat," said Linda.Heins says resources would be better spent on counselors, psychologists and other things to address the cause of the violence. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Owners of sportfishing and diving charters in San Diego expressed their grief and condolences Monday after learning of the deadly boat fire near Santa Cruz Island. John Conniff, the owner of Islander Charters, was at sea guiding a trip when he heard chatter over the radio. "It was in the middle of the night, and I could actually hear it from where I was sleeping, but we could only hear the Coast Guard side of things, at first I heard that there was a fire on a boat," said Conniff. "We couldn't hear the Conception side of the story, but I could hear Coast Guard responding to a serious mayday outside of Santa Barbara."It wasn't until Conniff returned to San Diego that he learned just how devastating the fire was. "My heart goes out to them… my first thought when I heard it on the radio was my own family and then of the families of the 25 people sleeping below decks on our boat," said Conniff. Coniff runs sportfishing and dive trips anywhere from one-and-a-half to five days. He says the whole industry is grieving. Patrick Douglas, with Horizon Charters, posted this message on their Facebook page. "Like many of you in the California dive community we woke up to the devastating news of the Truth Aquatics dive boat fire off Santa Cruz Island last night. Sending our deepest condolences and love out to the families impacted, this is a very sad day for the industry. #prayers"By phone, Douglas told 10News that dive boats in California operate at a higher level than any other state. He says they maintain the highest standards and an incident like this is an anomaly. In his 30 years of experience, Douglas has never seen an incident so severe. Both Douglas and Conniff acknowledge incidents like this are a reminder to double down on safety operations. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- New census data shows that less than a third of San Diegans have their mortgages paid off.Of the more than 228,000 houses located in the city, 60,402 housing units have no mortgage.The numbers were released following a five-year study by the Census Bureau. The study was conducted between 2012 and 2016.Of the cities and neighborhoods with more than 1,000 homes, Harbison Canyon took the top spot for most homes without a mortgage at 41 percent followed by Bostonia also at 41 percent and Coronado at 39 percent. As far as cities and neighborhoods with the least amount of homes without mortgages, San Diego County Estates takes first place at 13 percent followed by Poway at 20 percent and Rancho San Diego at 20 percent. For those trying to buy a home, the county does offer programs to help with down payments and closing costs.
