Experts say a scammer cloning a phone number can happen to anyone and a Nebraska woman says her number is being used to try and solicit others.Caller ID "spoofing" is used to disguise someone's identity and is usually to trick a person into giving away personal information for criminal activity, or money. Now, many in Omaha are seeing local numbers including the same prefix show up on a call.Evy Akpan says recently she was receiving multiple calls a day from people who said she had called them several times when she hadn't called them at all."If I'm trying to live my life, and I'm getting phone calls throughout the day, and my phone is constantly ringing for a scam purpose, it's frustrating," Akpan said. "And also just receiving these voicemails of upset people chewing me a new one, and I'm like, 'I'm not calling you!' "The Better Business Bureau of Nebraska, SW Iowa, South Dakota, and Great Plains Kansas said scammers usually only clone a person's number for 24-48 hours then move on to new ones. The Federal Communications Commission says it's best not to pick up a call from an unknown number because if you do, criminals will know your number is active."Really, it's important not to trust the caller ID. The fact that it says it's coming from an area code that we're not familiar with doesn't really mean anything these days," said Jim Hegarty, CEO of the BBB Nebraska. The FCC adds that if your number's been spoofed, there's not much you can do other than change your voicemail to let people know of the situation. 1557

FALLBROOK (CNS) - One person was killed on Interstate 15 near Fallbrook early Saturday morning in a single-vehicle crash that may have involved alcohol, authorities said.California Highway Patrol officers were first alerted to the crash shortly after 5 a.m. when a truck driver reported seeing a damaged car with an injured person inside stop momentarily at the truck scales in Rainbow before continuing on northbound I-15, CHP Officer Mark Latulippe said.Officers called hospitals in Temecula and Murrieta to check if there were any walk-in patients who could have been involved in the crash, and eventually were alerted that apparent victims had turned up at Rancho Springs Medical Center in Murrieta, according to a CHP incident log.One passenger involved in the crash, identified as a 20-year-old man from Winchester, was pronounced dead at the hospital, Latulippe said. Another passenger, a 21-year-old Torrance man, sustained moderate injuries and the driver, a 23-year-old man also from Torrance, was not injured. The driver was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, Latulippe said.Officers were investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and determined it occurred on northbound I-15 past state Route 76.Evidence suggested that the car struck a call box, lost control toward the center divider and may have returned to the right shoulder before continuing on the freeway, Latulippe said.Officers asked anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call the CHP Border Communications Center at (858) 637-3800. 1538

Experts say the finalization of a COVID-19 vaccine is in our near future. Dr. William Moss is a professor of epidemiology and the executive director of the International Vaccine Access Center at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.“Remarkable progress has been made in the development of COVID-19 vaccines,” Dr. William Moss said.He says it typically takes five to 10 years to develop a vaccine, but with so much money and attention going toward COVID-19, he believes it’s likely we’ll have a vaccine by the end of the year.“I’m pretty confident that there will be a vaccine that will have an emergency-use authorization in the United States by the end of 2020,” Dr. Moss said.According to Dr. Moss, of the dozens if not hundreds of vaccine candidates in clinical trials, there are three vaccine candidates that have reached phase three. Phase three is when tens of thousands of volunteers test the vaccine to make sure it’s safe and effective. As of this week, we have optimistic news regarding phase-three efficacy results from biopharmaceutical company Pfizer – which has been collaborating with German company BioNTech.“Early preliminary results suggests that their vaccine is 90% or so effective in preventing mild to moderate or severe disease.”If the 90% efficacy data holds up after follow ups from participants in late November, Dr. Moss says he expects the FDA will rigorously review the data and approve the vaccine for distribution. That means health care workers and other high-priority groups would get the vaccine in December of this year, or early next year.“Pfizer says that they could have close to 50 million doses by the end of this year," Dr. Moss said. "Now remember their vaccine – as a number of the vaccine candidates do – requires two doses per individual. So, 50 million doses allows you to vaccinate about 25 million people.”Dr. Moss says the unprecedented investment in vaccine manufacturing will make it possible for the vaccine to be distributed so quickly. However, there are still quite a few logistical challenges since he says the Pfizer vaccine requires extreme cold temperatures as low as minus 117 degrees Fahrenheit.“So we need warehouses to store the vaccine that have freezers that can maintain that cold, we need transportation systems – planes, trucks – that can deliver the vaccine and keep it cold. And then at the site of distribution, we need to be able to keep these vaccines cold.”Therefore, he says it will likely take a lot longer for the general population to get the vaccine. He’s guessing not until the middle of 2021. Of course, the idea of saving lives with the help of a vaccine is very promising, but he says the greatest misconception is that we can go back to "normal" as soon as it’s distributed.“That by no means is going to indicate that we can go back to our pre-pandemic life," Dr. Moss said. "We will not know whether these vaccines stop transmission and we’re going to still need to wear masks, to wash our hands and physically distance even when vaccines become available.”Time and patience will be vital as we wait to see the long-term impacts of the vaccine in this pandemic. 3168

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - An Escondido family was surprised with a life-changing gift Tuesday morning, brand new appliances for their home. The gift was made possible through a partnership between the Boys & Girls Club of America and Maytag.“When I heard my name I was speechless, I was overwhelmed," said Rosie Montejano. "I thought I was being tricked, but then I was like, no it’s us, it’s us!"Montejano's children attend the Escondido Boys & Girls Club after-school program.“The security that my kids get picked up, they’re watched, and I don’t have to worry about who’s watching my children," said Montejano. She explains it's been a difficult few years, with her older daughter battling addiction. The family adopted her daughter's two children, so now they take care of five. While Montejano can't donate financially to the Boys & Girls Club, she donates her time. She also asks her employer Walmart to donate goods to the Club whenever they can.Last year Danny Sherlock, President & CEO of Boys & Girls Club of Greater San Diego, won the Maytag Dependable Leader Award, which allowed him the opportunity to pay it forward to others.Montejano's generosity never went unnoticed by branch manager Dave Luevanos, who nominated her for the Maytag donation made possible through Sherlock's leadership award."I feel truly blessed today, and I am overwhelmed," said Montejano. She's looking forward to having a new refrigerator and washer and dryer in time for the holidays. 1495
