BERLIN, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- China and Germany will ink 8.7 billion U.S. dollars worth of business deals during Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang's visit to Germany, Chinese Ambassador to Germany Wu Hongbo said here on Friday.Wu said at a press conference that Li was accompanied by some 120 Chinese business leaders on his current visit. The two sides are expected to sign 11 agreements and commercial contracts worth some 8.7 billion dollars, covering such fields as automobile purchase, financial cooperation, energy and machinery.Earlier on Friday, Li met with German President Christian Wulff and then held talks with Chancellor Angela Merkel.Li told the German leaders that China is a long-term and responsible player in European financial markets. BEIJING, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's urban fixed asset investment rose 24.9 percent in the first 11 months year on year to hit 21.07 trillion yuan (3.19 trillion U.S. dollars), China's statistics authority said Saturday.The growth rate was 0.5 percentage points higher than that during the first ten months, according to figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).The urban investment in the primary, secondary and tertiary industries rose by 16.6 percent, 22.7 percent and 26.9 percent respectively.During the first 11 months, investment in central government projects rose 10.2 percent year on year to 1.68 trillion yuan, while investment in local government projects was up 26.4 percent to reach 19.39 trillion yuan, according to the NBS figures.Property development investment was up 36.5 percent year on year to reach 4.27 trillion yuan, the figures showed.During the same period, state-owned and state-controlled investment reached 8.75 trillion yuan, up 19 percent from a year earlier.Investment in railway constructions and transportation jumped 25.3 percent to 582.2 billion yuan, while investment in petroleum and gas exploration climbed 5.8 percent to 219.4 billion yuan for the first 11 months.

HANGZHOU, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Rescue efforts are continuing to save a worker trapped 18 meters under sea surface for almost 18 hours in Jiaxing Harbor, east China's Zhejiang Province, local authorities said.The worker, 43, surnamed Fan from central China's Hubei Province, was stuck at the bottom of a steel shielding canister in which he was working at 9 a.m. Thursday. The shielding canister deformed under sudden increase of hydraulic pressure from flood tide, according to local media report.The shielding canister, a part of an offshore platform, is one meter in diameter. Fan was working at the bottom of the canister that joins a cement column when the incident happened.Rescue staff said, "We are making slow progress because of complex geological conditions. The deformed section, about two to four meters under the sea surface, has been squeezed to only 3cm wide at the narrowest part."Thankfully, the shielding canister has not fractured, though seriously deformed.Rescue workers have decided to cut the cement column off the seabed to lift the shielding canister.Rescue efforts started at 10 a.m. Thursday. Food, including ham sausages and drinking water were supplied to the worker, through a flexible pipe. Fan asked for some cigarettes.Fan's family members have arrived at the site, praying for him at the bank.

BEIJING, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao vowed Monday that the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Chinese government will wage the fight against corruption with greater determination and more forceful measures as the situation remains "grave".Addressing a plenary session of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI), the Party's anti-graft body, Hu said all work should be done with the fundamental interests of the majority of the people as the core concern.Hu, also General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, said problems that seriously violated the public interest and sparked the most public complaints should be addressed to ensure social justice.He said efforts were needed to strengthen ties between the Party and the people and to enable the people to play a more active role in fighting corruption.Hu pledged to "combat graft strictly and punish corrupt officials severely" so as to win trust from the people.Hu admitted that prominent problems remained in the fight against corruption and efforts to build a clean government, and warned of a "grave situation and arduous tasks."He called for enhanced supervision and monitoring of the implementation of major central government and Party policies and measures and the promotion of a corruption-free work style among officials.He called for reinforced efforts to build a system to prevent and punish corruption."More efforts should be made to investigate graft in key industries and key posts," he said, stressing the supervision of procedures concerning the promotion of local officials to prevent abuse of power or other corrupt conduct.Figures from the CCDI show 146,517 officials across China were punished for disciplinary violations last year, including 5,098 leaders at the county head level or above and 804 officials who were referred for prosecution.Discipline inspection bodies received almost 1.43 million petitions and tip-offs last year and recovered 8.97 billion yuan (1.35 billion U.S. dollars) in economic losses for the state."All comrades in the Party must serve the people with all their hearts and use their power to seek benefits for them.
