SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials have reported 3,132 new COVID-19 infections -- the 27th consecutive day with more than 1,000 cases.On Sunday, there were no new virus-related deaths reported.Sunday was the 19th day with more than 2,000 new cases.Another 50 people also were hospitalized, according to Sunday's data, and another seven patients were sent to intensive care units.The county's cumulative cases increased to 145,779 and the death toll remained at 1,402.Ten new community outbreaks were confirmed on Saturday. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Prosecutors Friday announced charges against 10 alleged members of a San Diego auto insurance fraud ring, who are accused of buying damaged vehicles and staging car thefts in order to collect more than 0,000 in fraudulent claims.The defendants -- four were arrested this week, while a half-dozen others remain at large -- are accused of buying already-damaged vehicles with high mileage, then submitting false damage or theft claims, defrauding a dozen insurance companies in the process, according to prosecutors and the California Department of Insurance.Investigators allege the suspects filed about three dozen false claims over the course of four years, with 56 vehicles used in the alleged scheme. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Bengal tiger cub rescued during a smuggling attempt at the US-Mexico border was joined Monday by a Sumatran tiger cub from the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.The Bengal tiger was discovered last month at the Otay Mesa border crossing last month and taken to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park for care.RELATED: Smuggled tiger cub found at US-Mexico borderThe Sumatran tiger that joined the cub in San Diego is nine-weeks-old. He has been fed by humans since last month because his mother became aggressive toward him. Zoo personnel said the cub would "chuff" in a friendly tiger greeting but his mother, Damai, would not respond.Animal care staff from the Safari Park were on hand at San Diego International Airport to meet the cub and the keepers upon their arrival. The young tiger was immediately transported to the Safari Park’s Ione and Paul Harter Animal Care Center, where he will continue to receive the care he needs.“We are beyond thrilled to welcome this tiger cub to the Safari Park,” said Andy Blue, associate curator of mammals at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “His keepers reported he did extremely well during the flight — slept most of the way. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Attorney's Office Thursday urged families with guns in the home to practice proper firearm safety while self- quarantining to keep the weapons out of the hands of children.With stay-at-home orders issued at the state and local levels, and schools closed down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, City Attorney Mara Elliott's office said gun safety is paramount."When you have guns and children in the home and do not practice safe storage, you are increasing the risk that someone will be accidentally shot," Elliott said. "Children are very resourceful when it comes to locating things their parents thought they'd never find. When they find a gun, it often leads to tragedy."The city's Safe Storage of Firearms Ordinance, which was authored by Elliott and went into effect last year, requires San Diego gun owners to store firearms in a locked container or to secure guns with a trigger lock unless they are in the immediate control of an authorized user.The City Attorney's Office said trigger locks and gun safes are readily available for purchase online and that all guns sold in California after Jan. 1, 2002, were required to come with a free trigger lock.Elliott's office said 4.5 million children nationwide live in homes with one more loaded and unlocked firearms.Firearm retailers nationwide have seen an uptick in firearm sales amid the coronavirus pandemic, and it remains unclear whether gun stores might be ordered to close locally.In one of the county's coronavirus-related briefings, Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said firearm stores were not considered essential businesses that should remain open per the state's stay-at-home order.Earlier this week, San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore said his office was awaiting further guidance from the governor's office, and would not force gun stores to close in the meantime, citing a concern that doing so would push consumers to purchase guns on the black market.On Wednesday, Gov. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council voted unanimously, 9-0, today in favor of building a new fire station at UC San Diego.The fire station is the first on the campus and will serve UCSD students, faculty, staff and the school's surrounding neighborhoods. The station will be located in the campus' northwest corner at the intersection of North Torrey Pines Road and Northpoint Driveway."UC San Diego is pleased that the San Diego City Council has approved a fire station to be built on the campus," UCSD Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla said. "We look forward to working together with the City of San Diego on this vital project. UC San Diego is significantly growing its enrollment to make the university one of the nation's premier residential campuses and it is critical that we address life safety issues as part of our growth."More than 36,000 students currently live on UCSD's campus, with the school planning to add another 20,000 student beds by 2022.
