Domestic workers often don't have basic legal rights and protections that most workers take for granted. That includes jobs like nannies, housekeepers and home care employees.Now, they’re hoping a new proposed federal labor law will protect them for the first time ever. Nurse June Barrett is used to taking care of others, but today, she feels she's taking a big step to take care of herself. Barrett traveled to Washington, D.C. with about 100 other domestic workers to rally for safer job protections. “He would touch me, kiss me, say horrible things to me,” Barrett says of one of her past employees. As a live-in caretaker, Barrett says she has worked for patients who would sexually harass her. “I suffered in silence,” she says. “I had to suffer all of that by myself.” For decades, federal labor laws have excluded domestic workers from many protections, which has had an impact on about two million nannies, house cleaners and home care workers. Nine states have passed bills to protect domestic workers but now, Congress will consider a bill to ensure those workers earn at least the minimum wage, get paid sick leave and overtime, meal breaks and stronger protections against harassment and discrimination.“We need to have a federal standard, a national standard, so that workers are protected in every state. Not just some,” says Monica Ramirez with the National Domestic Workers Alliance. Ramirez hopes for the first time in history, there will be legal protections for domestic workers in their work environments. It’ll be a historic bill that could provide domestic workers protections most other workers take for granted. “Why aren't we getting the protection that we need?” asks Barrett. “Why shouldn't we get the protection we need?” 1766

AURORA, Colo. – Hundreds of people are expected to gather Friday evening to demand that the officers involved in the in-custody death of Elijah McClain be fired by the Aurora Police Department.On Friday, they got part of their wish granted as Officer Jason Rosenblatt was among three Aurora Police officers fired. Rosenblatt recieved a text message from three other officers who imitated a choke hold that was performed on McClain. Rosenblatt responded with "Ha-Ha" to the text messages, Aurora Interim Police Chief Vanessa Wilson said. Two of the officers in the photo were fired, while a third resigned earlier this week. But the protesters are calling for the firing of two additional officers who were involved in last August's incident that resulted in McClain's death.“For 10 months Aurora Police Department has shielded Elijah McClain's murderers on their force from facing any form of justice. It was only last Friday, just ahead of a mass march for Elijah, that they pulled the three killers off the streets and put them on paid desk duty,” reads the announcement of the protest organized by the Party for Socialism and Liberation – Denver (PSL). “We need to make it clear that this is absolutely NOT enough.”Last Friday, APD announced officers Nathan Woodyard, Rosenblatt and Randy Roedema had been taken off street duty "because of threats and harassment," according to a police spokesperson. Police said those threats involved phone calls as well as email messages.Officials did not disclose which department the officers were reassigned to, but said they were working in a "non-enforcement capacity."The PSL says they expect murder charges “for the three killers” and demand that APD fire all three “IMMEDIATELY.”The rally will start at 3 p.m. MT at the site where organizers say, “Elijah was brutalized and killed and where APD danced on his grave.” From there, protesters will march to the APD headquarters at the Aurora Municipal Center.The rally will start three hours earlier than originally planned as McClain's family plans to hold a "community response" following a 2 p.m. news conference by the Aurora Police Department. The march is still scheduled for 6 p.m. The march and protest will put APD’s response to test once again, following a violent night of confrontation between officers and protesters last Saturday.Organizers say there will be people of all ages at Friday’s protest, “who do not want a repeat of last Saturday’s violence from APD, but (who) will not be intimidated out of exercising their First Amendment right to assemble and voice their concerns.”McClain’s death, largely unnoticed for the past 10 months, recently garnered national media attention following nationwide calls to reform interactions between police and Black Americans in the wake of George Floyd’s death.On Tuesday, the Colorado U.S. Attorney's Office, along with several other law enforcement agencies, announced they've been reviewing facts in the death of the 23-year-old Black man since last year for a potential federal civil rights investigation, saying they were aware of the photo allegations which surfaced Monday evening, and were gathering further information about the incident. Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt announced at a news conference on Wednesday that he has tested positive for COVID-19. Stitt said the illnesses started as feeling achy, but reported no other symptoms. He is working from home and will remain in quarantine until Interim Commissioner of Health Lance Frye says it is okay to return.Stitt and Frye also gave an update on COVID-19 in Oklahoma. They said data showed that Oklahoma's positive rate is less than the national average for positive cases.Data also showed that hospitals have supplies stockpiled and the hospitalization rate in the state is going down. Oklahoma coronavirus cases are rising. The highest single-day total was reported on July 15 with 1,075 cases. As of July 14, a total of 432 Oklahomans have passed from the virus. Holly is cutting the drive through time by 10 to 15 seconds.For 20 years, worker Orlina has been taking orders and serving up food. She says Holly is one of the most helpful employees on staff. “It’s really fast and helps us with the speed a lot,” she says.The creator behind this artificial intelligence technology is Valyant. Rob Carpenter, the CEO of the company, says as jobs evolve and change, new jobs become available. As with most new technology, Carpenter says they’re still working out all the kinks. “It’s almost understanding the almost infinite ways to that people can ask for a cheeseburger,” Carpenter explains. “There are also the different accents you have to content with and the background noises.” While customers find the idea of Holly fun, their still unsure. “It was awkward,” says one customer. “And humans are just better and more responsive and talkative.” Carpenter admits Holly isn't the perfect employee, but he says in the next five years, you will see more robots at big name stores and fast-food restaurants."Right now, this is ground zero handling drive through,” he says. “Eventually, we are going to start seeing it in more tangible ways, where it can actually carry on a more fluid conversation." CLEVELAND, Ohio – An 11-year-old boy was shot and killed while attending a birthday party in Cleveland on Saturday. Authorities say the shooting occurred at a residence in the city’s Hough neighborhood around 9:30 p.m. EMS transported the child, later identified as Tyshaun Taylor, to Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The resident of the apartment told police that she had allowed her 16-year-old son to host a birthday party. She said she had left to go to a nearby store when the shooting happened.
