SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A heartbroken woman is making a plea for tips after hundreds of family heirlooms were stolen out of her Allied Gardens home.Last Friday afternoon, Mary Anne Madruga got a wrenching call from her husband."Just a moment of disbelief and shock. Am I really hearing what I think I'm hearing?" said Madruga.During a two-and-a-half-hour window when nobody was home, somebody had pried open a back window and made off with hundreds of pieces of jewelry, silver and coins, including more than a hundred pieces of jewelry belonging to her mother, who died of cancer.MAP: Track crime in your neighborhood"On the last birthday of mine before she passed, she gave me a gold and diamond necklace ... and that piece really held a special meaning for me," said Madruga.But perhaps the most painful loss: the more than 10 pieces her artist father - who has also passed - made for her mother.A neighbor's surveillance camera captured him walking up to her home empty-handed. 25 minutes later, he's spotted again, toting a stuffed pillowcase Madruga says belongs to her."It just leaves a hole ... a hole in my heart ... items with special meaning I'm not going to see again," said Madruga.Anyone with information is asked to call Crimestoppers at 888-580-8477. 1269

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new report found that San Diego is one of the worst cities to buy a home, but a nearby city may give San Diegans hope. The report by GOBankRates lists San Diego as one of the 15 worst placed to buy a home in the country. The site says home prices in San Diego have increased by 1.8 percent over the last year. In the last five years, home values have grown by a little more than 33 percent. “The populous city of San Diego may be home to over 1.3 million people, but home values grow slower than some of the smaller, neighboring cities. San Diego only saw home values increase at a rate of 1.8% over the past year,” the site says. A better option, the website says, is National City, where home values have increased over the last five years by more than 49 percent. “National City offers a smaller footprint for a better value. The median home value is an impressive 5,500, which is almost 0,000 cheaper than San Diego.”If you are considering buying in San Diego, there are options. A new housing development is going up in Otay Mesa geared toward first-time buyers. There's also hope for teachers. School districts around San Diego could begin building affordable housing for employees and teachers struggling to make ends meet. 1267

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new apartment complex in Pacific Beach is gearing up for its opening, but residents can expect to pay top dollar for all the bells and whistles offered by the complex. The Jefferson, a 3 million complex, is located just off I-5. According to its website, studio apartments range from ,478 to ,617. The largest apartments in the complex with three bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms range from ,987 to ,103. Those prices are much higher than the typical apartment in Pacific Beach, according to Zillow. Zillow’s rental map shows prices in Pacific Beach ranging from ,425 for a studio to more than ,850 for a three bedroom. Between those two price points, Zillow shows 152 apartments available for rent. One rental manager who spoke with 10News says The Jefferson may have a difficult time finding tenants at those prices. “Tenants, prospective tenants, they're educated. They educate themselves and they do comparative shopping. So if it's too high, you're going to sit empty,” said Jim Vosacek, who runs Western Hills Real Estate Management. JPI released a statement to 10News:“Jefferson Pacific Beach is the first multifamily development of its kind in Pacific Beach. While there are currently no other new, luxury developments like this in the area, this development will offer residents a quality, high-end lifestyle that has not previously been available. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Paradise Hills family is in search of a good Samaritan after a young autistic man was mugged and beaten for his brand new iPhone, just blocks from his home.The incident played out along Briarwood Road on an afternoon two weeks ago. Garrett De Leon had just gotten off work and off the bus.His pride and joy was in his right hand - a new iPhone 10 that his parents gave to him for his birthday. Deleon was texting his mom that he was blocks from home, when it happened."This guy came from behind me and snatched my phone and pushed me to the ground," said De Leon.De Leon says he fought back, the two struggling on the ground. "He pushed me again and runs to the car," said De Leon.Deleon says he chased the man - a tall, lean black man wearing a beanie - to an older black car, where the man jumped in the back seat, the window rolled down."He tells his buddy to take off immediately," said De Leon. In the meantime, the thief was hitting De Leon, who says he was delivering his own blows through the window."I had too much adrenaline and didn't feel pain. Hopped up on anger and determined to get at them and at the phone," said De Leon.After the car started up, it dragged De Leon some 100 feet before he was thrown off, bloodied with cuts and and scrapes, and a sprained hand.Soon after, a Hispanic woman in her 20s, with a baby in her back seat, raced to his side. She tended to him before calling 9-1-1."Shows there are good people. She was more worried about me than her baby," said De Leon.When help arrived and she left, De Leon never got her name.
