San Diego (KGTV)- Homes and businesses aren't the only things being affected by power shut-offs Thursday. Traffic lights are also out, and it's causing a lot of confusion for drivers. Just before 10 a.m., a crash happened at the intersection of Poway Road and Highway 67, where the traffic lights had no power. A car slammed into the side of an SUV. Good Samaritans ran through traffic to assist and call 911. Both drivers are expected to be okay. Hours earlier, traffic backed up for about half a mile during the morning rush hour. Drivers were confused about their turn to go. "A lot of these people have been coming to this intersection for 30-plus years," says Deputy Nicholas McGregor. "They have an expectation that when they get here, it's going to be smooth, flow traffic. So when the lights go out, I think it's a hazard."Wednesday night, a car rammed into the back of a truck after power was shut off at the intersection of Scripps Poway Parkway and Highway 67. The car burst into flames moments after the crash.The Sheriff's Department says there are only about two hours of battery life on the traffic lights after the power is shut off. Deputies try to put as much signage out for drivers but say they should remain cautious. 1247

Lynn Walsh is the Ethics Chair for the Society of Professional Journalists and said social media can be a good place to get information, as long as you know how it works and some red flags to keep an eye on. “Remember that the content that you’re seeing is all based on an algorithm and that algorithm is based on content that you are normally engaging with and the people that you are connected with and engaging with,” she said. She said social media will tailor what you see to who and what you interact with, so a good tool can be getting off apps and going straight to the source. She said to try googling stories to see diverse coverage of the subject and other related stories. She said a tool to tell if an informational post is true is to see if there is a link to more information. If someone just posts a picture or screenshot with facts or information, ask for more. “Hey do you have a link that adds or provides more information? Because the county is not going to post this jpeg image online. There’s going to be a link on a website, it’s going to link back where there’s more information,” she said. She also reminds that social media companies can filter content. She said they each have different policies on how and what they filter. “People say ‘oh it’s my First Amendment right to publish anything I want on these platforms.’ Remember the First Amendment applies to the government censorship of your opinion. It does not apply to businesses, if a business wants to decide to take something down, they can, that is their private platform,” she said. While news outlets and social media platforms are responsible for being accurate, she also pointed out that in an era of sharing posts, people also need to hold themselves accountable.“The third group that has responsibility in misinformation and things spreading, it’s the public. We have a responsibility to let people know if they’re sharing something that’s incorrect,” she said. 2229

Players will have to quickly adjust to the first major renovation at the famed South Course in more than a decade."I can't wait to see them play it and see what their scores are and try to hear some of their comments," Scott Bentley, who helps oversee the City of San Diego Parks and Recreation Golf Division, said while giving 10News a tour of the changes Monday ahead of the tournment.Respected course designer Rees Jones, who helmed the last major renovation to Torrey Pines in 2001, examined advanced analytical data from the 2019 tournament, studying where the pros are hitting their shots. Jones used that information to recommend changes, moving several bunkers to locations that will force players to make a difficult strategic decision on how to approach the hole. "We tried to keep the changes not too dramatic because we do have all that public play and our residents visitors come here...we didn't want to make it too crazy," said Bentley.Other changes include significant modifications to the course's drainage and irrigation system, which will help use water more efficiently. 1748

  

SAN DIEGO — California has some of the most expensive gas in the entire country. A new study by GasBuddy claims the Golden State also has some of the most aggressive drivers.According to the study, California ranks number one for most aggressive drivers followed by Connecticut and Georgia.The study claims those aggressive habits are also costing Californians cold hard cash. GasBuddy reported aggressive driving habits costs an additional 7 per year in fuel.The habits include hard braking, speeding and rapid acceleration.Further findings indicate that the more heavily populated the city, the more motorists drive aggressively.Check out the chart below:  709

  

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Street racing could return to SDCCU Stadium, after just a couple month's hiatus.RaceLegal, a non-profit that has run drag races in the stadium parking lot for 21 years, says they have new leadership and new funding. They hope to resume racing soon.But, organizers say they're having trouble getting permission from the City of San Diego to use the venue."This is really important for the community," says Lydia Denecochea, RaceLegal's Executive Director. "It saves lives."RaceLegal started in the late 1990s as a response to a rash of street racing crashes and deaths. Denecochea says giving people a safe, controlled environment to race has made the roads safer across the city."It's a human characteristic that we are competitive, and many of us love speed. It'll never go away," she says.The non-profit group joined forces with city leaders, the San Diego Police Department and the San Diego Sheriff to give drivers an alternative. People could even volunteer at events to satisfy community service requirements from traffic tickets.The number of deaths from street racing fell from 16 in 2000 to just two in 2018. Injuries also saw a drastic drop-off in the same time frame, from 39 to only one."It works," says Denecochea. "In 2000, we had carnage on our roads."But a lack of funding led the non-profit to close in early 2019. A message on their website told supporters that the budget deficit, "renders the program not viable to continue service to our community."RELATED: RaceLegal stops drag races after more than two decades in Mission ValleyThey held what many thought would be their final race on March 1.Since then, interest from a private investor has Denecochea looking into holding more races. She's now asking supporters to send a letter to the Mayor's office and to other city leaders urging them to let RaceLegal use SDCCU Stadium again.A spokesperson from the city told 10News they're looking into the issue. In a statement, they said, "The City is in communication with RaceLegal on the potential resumption of legal racing at the stadium. However, concurrently the City is in discussions with other race producers to ensure that legal racing at the stadium continues to provide a safe option for the San Diego community."Councilmember Scott Sherman's office says they've also been in touch with RaceLegal and with the stadium to resolve the issue.One potential roadblock is the pending sale of SDCCU Stadium and the land around it to San Diego State University. In November, voters passed Measure G, which authorized the deal to create an SDSU West campus and build a new stadium for the Aztec football program.Denecochea says she wants the city to let RaceLegal keep racing until construction starts. She thinks they can use that time to find a new venue."It's worth it to save 16 lives a year," she says. 2862
