Amazon’s Prime-branded trucks have drawn a legal challenge from a company with a familiar name.
Amazon’s Marketplace lets third-party business owners sell their products on Amazon, which also helps fulfill orders via its warehouses and shipping networks. Marketplace is one of the company’s three “pillars,” along with Amazon Prime and Amazon Web Services.?Many have?speculated about the company’s fourth pillar, which could be artificial intelligence, led by Amazon’s digital assistant Alexa.
Amazon’s real estate expansion in Bellevue kicked off a couple years ago but went into overdrive in 2019. Following a contentious debate over a “head tax” on top employers in Seattle, Amazon confirmed plans to back out of one of its most high-profile buildings and turned its attention to Bellevue.
Amazon’s growth in physical retail raises natural concerns among many of the same traditional retailers whose businesses have been undercut by the company’s online domination. In a special report on the company from this past March, The Economist?cites the possibility of new regulatory scrutiny?for the company in the future. “If Amazon does become a utility for commerce, the calls will grow for it to be regulated as one,” the magazine concludes. “Shareholders are right to believe in Amazon’s potential. But success will bring it into conflict with an even stronger beast: government.”
