Since the Trump administration announced it would end its practice of separating families apprehended at the southern border last June under its "zero tolerance" immigration policy, at least 245 children have been separated from their parents, according to a new court filing.Between late June 2018 and early February of this year, the administration identified 245 children who had been separated, though four of them are under additional review. The administration said the basis for the separation in the majority of cases was "criminality, prosecution, gang affiliation or other law enforcement purpose."The court document is a status report in an ongoing family separation lawsuit. The court will hold a hearing Thursday.The American Civil Liberties Union originally filed the case against the Trump administration last year on behalf of a Congolese woman, referred to as "Ms. L," who was seeking asylum in the US and was separated from her 7-year-old daughter. The case was later expanded to become a class-action lawsuit.District Judge Dana Sabraw issued a preliminary injunction last June blocking most family separations at the US-Mexico border and ordering that those already separated be reunited.As of February 13, the government has discharged 2,735 of 2,816 possible children who fell under the Ms. L lawsuit, according to Wednesday's court filing. There are also five children in the care of the Office of Refugee Resettlement, which is required to place kids with a sponsor in the US, proceeding toward reunification "or other appropriate discharge." Four of those children have parents who are not in the US.Of the children who were separated as of last June, 62 are no longer in Office of Refugee Resettlement care, according to the court filing. It adds: "Based on the information available to date, in the 245 identified separations the parent was either excluded from the Ms. L class or was separated for a reason consistent with the Court's preliminary injunction."The government is still reviewing the cases of four separations.Plaintiffs in the case have requested additional information on the new separations. Since it landed on Mars in 2012 NASA's Curiosity rover has been exploring Gale Crater, a vast, dry ancient lake bed with a mountain at its center. Now, Curiosity has found sediments containing sulfate salt in the crater, which suggest it once held salty lakes.A range of salts have been found on Mars in different locations. Researchers interpret these as evidence of ancient brines. Salty water formations seemed to increase on the Martian surface as the planet transitioned to an arid climate 3.5 billion years ago.The new detection of sulfate salts came from sedimentary rocks dated to between 3.3 and 3.7 billion years ago. Curiosity has analyzed other, older rocks on Mars and didn't detect these salts in them.Researchers believe the salt is evidence of the crater's lake evaporating in the Red Planet's arid environment. They also believe studying younger rocks in the future could shed more light on how the Martian surface dried out.Gale Crater was created by an ancient impact, then filled in with sediment layers over time. Mount Sharp, the mountain at its center, was created by wind erosion of the hardened sediment layers. Those same layers act like chapters in the history of Mars and provide clues to its environment at each point in time.At the time the sulfate salts were present, lakes were probably scattered across the crater floor, fed by streams in the crater walls. TAMPA, Fla. — The City of Tampa has built a tent city that will house 100 homeless people during the safer-at-home order in Hillsborough County. The camp will be open on Monday.For the next 30 days, Tampa will pay Catholic Charities Diocese of St. Petersburg to run the temporary tent city, called Hillsborough Hope. Tampa officials did not provide the location of the tent city due to safety reasons.Along with the 100 tents, the site will include a mobile laundromat, mobile shower trailers and six portable toilet rentals. Those living in the camp will be fed three meals a day and will have access to on-site medical treatment.The Catholic Charities will also supply the residents with water bottles and hand sanitizer.Hillsborough Hope is open to any homeless person except for registered sex offenders.Anyone who shows up to the camp will be screened for COVID-19. If someone presents symptoms of the coronavirus, they will be referred to BayCare Health System.Each tent is spaced about 5 feet apart and will only house one person.Every person staying at the camp will be issued a wristband that corresponds to their tent number. Anyone accepted in the camp will have to adhere to the safer-at-home order put in place by the county. There will be a 5 p.m. curfew for the residents. 1300
