SAN FRANCISCO, April 7 (Xinhua) -- A latest research has shown that worldwide camera phone sales, driven by fast growing high- tier camera phone market, will top 1 billion units for the first time in 2011.According to the study by Strategy Analytics, a global independent research and consulting firm, sales of camera phones are projected to grow by 21 percent from 918 million units last year to 1.114 billion units in 2011, which will be the first time that annual volumes of camera phones have exceeded the 1-billion mark."The fastest growing segment of the camera phone market will be the high-tier. We forecast camera phones with sensors of eight megapixels and above to grow a healthy 240 percent worldwide during 2011," Neil Mawston, director at Strategy Analytics, said in a statement on Thursday.He added that smartphone vendors, such as Nokia and HTC, are increasingly loading their flagship models with more megapixels to deliver improved imaging quality for premium operator services.Statistics from Strategy Analytics show that some 4.2 billion camera phones have been sold worldwide since 2000.

WASHINGTON, April 29 (Xinhua) -- A U.S. appeals court ruled on Friday that the Obama administration can continue the taxpayer- funding for human embryonic stem cell research.The U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington overturned a preliminary federal court order that would have blocked the U.S. Health and Human Services Department and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from spending government money on embryonic stem cells research."Today's ruling is a victory for our scientists and patients around the world who stand to benefit from the groundbreaking medical research they're pursuing," said Nicholas Papas, a White House spokesman.U.S. President Barack Obama has been trying to expand government funding for human embryonic stem cells research, saying that years of progress on finding cures for spinal cord injuries, Parkinson's disease and other diseases would be lost without the government support on this field.Opponents have been arguing the research is unacceptable because embryonic stem cells can only be obtained through destroying human embryos.Last August, a federal judge ruled that the government-backed embryonic stem cell research violated the law because embryos were destroyed in the process and it jeopardized the position of researchers using adult stem cells for winning federal grants.The government immediately appealed to the ruling, and the appeals court said the research could continue at the NIH before the judge ruled on the case.

BEIJING, March 22 (Xinhuanet) -- An autopsy began Monday on Berlin zoo's superstar polar bear Knut who died suddenly on Saturday, media reports said.However, it remained unclear when the results from the post-mortem examination of Knut would be published."I cannot give you a timeline. We will inform the public when we know what the exact cause was," AFP quoted spokeswoman Claudia Bienek as saying.Knut died while sunbathing at Berlin zoo in Germany in front of visitors. The four-year-old swivelled around several times before falling backwards into the water in his enclosure.Witnesses said he suffered a series of convulsions and appeared to have had an epileptic fit or a heart attack.Knut was born in 2006 to a female bear who rejected him at birth. He was hand-raised by his keeper at the zoo. Films were made about him and he appeared on the front cover of Vanity Fair magazine and earned the zoo about 7.11 million U.S. dollars.More than 15,000 Knut fans have so far paid tribute to him on Berlin zoo's website. BEIJING, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council, or Cabinet, Friday published the newly adopted regulations on expropriation of houses on state-owned land and compensation.The new rules, which took effect upon the issuing, took the place of the 2001 regulations on administration of the housing demolition and relocation in cities.The new rules specifically stated that neither violence or coercion may be used to force homeowners to leave. Nor could measures, such as illegally cutting water and power supplies, be used in relocation work.The new rules also banned land developers' involvement in the demolition and relocation procedures, as well as demolition by local governments without court approval.Moreover, the new regulations ensured fair prices for homeowners by providing that compensation for expropriated homes should be no lower than the sum of the market price of similar properties at the time of an expropriation.The regulations were first reviewed at a State Council executive meeting in December 2007. Later, public opinion was twice sought in 2010 after revisions had been made to the regulations.An executive meeting of the State Council Wednesday gave in-principle approval to the regulations.
