WEST PORTSMOUTH, Ohio - In Ohio, a dad turned an awkward silence into a beautiful moment when he belted out the national anthem at a high school basketball game after the sound system failed.The moment captured on video took place before the Waverly Tigers were to take on the Portsmouth West Senators Friday night.According to CNN, the pregame rituals started as usual, with everyone standing before playing the national anthem, but then, silence.The sound system was experiencing technical difficulties.That's when Trenton Brown began to belt out "The Star-Spangled Banner" at the encouragement of his wife, with no musical backup or a microphone.After he was done singing, Brown sat down and started eating his popcorn, CNN reported.Johnny Futhey, another parent who was at the game, captured the moment and posted it on his Facebook page, where it quickly went viral.Futhey said the performance brought tears to people's eyes.Brown told CNN that he's been singing most of his life but has never performed the national anthem solo. 1042

When it comes to voting in-person, Election Day in Tennessee went off without a hitch and some say election workers had much to do with that.Two of the many election workers who helped make it happen were a husband and wife who have worked the polls for more than 30 years.Tuesday was a busy day for Ira and Norma Hendon, voters got in line in Clarksville at 7 a.m.But the Hendon's work started even earlier at 5:30 a.m. And it lasted until about 8 p.m. as they and others made sure every voter who wanted to cast their ballot did so with no problems.Ira and Norma have been election workers for decades, starting in Stewart County and now Montgomery County."But when they ask you how long you've been there, it’s kind of embarrassing," said Norma.They say in the many years since they began working the polls in 1988, a lot has changed including the voting machines themselves."They were the huge machines that looked like photography things with curtains in the front."Ira is 88 years old and Norma is 86 years old and they say there's no slowing down, not even for COVID-19. They say they felt safe the entire time with their masks and gloves.From former President George H.W. Bush to President Donald Trump, this couple has never stopped helping a first-time or long-time voter on Election Day.And even during a pandemic, they say they were encouraged by the turnout this year's large turnout."It was so inspiring to see so many people who had medical and physical issues. WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Citing the desire to achieve financial stability while maintaining competitiveness, the College of William & Mary will discontinue seven of its 23 varsity sports.At the conclusion of the 20-21 academic year, men's and women's gymnastics, men's and women's swimming, men's indoor and outdoor track & field, and women's volleyball will no longer be sponsored as Division I sports at the Williamsburg institution.In an open letter, Director of Athletics Samantha K. Huge said, "This is a wrenching decision. It will impact 118 student-athletes and 13 coaches. Altered, too, will be the lives of thousands of family members, former varsity letter award winners, alumni, fans, donors, and supporters of these seven sports programs."Over the past two decades, W&M says there have been several athletics program reviews conducted by groups both within – and external – to athletics. Each of these reviews, according to W&M, reached the same conclusion: William & Mary's model of sponsoring 23 varsity sports is unsustainable without a significant increase in funding through private philanthropy and revenue generation.
