ROME, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Ambassador Sun Yuxi announced Chinese culture year in Italy at a press conference at the Chinese embassy here Friday.     The culture year, which follows Italian year in China in 2006, will officially start in September.     "The Chinese culture year in Italy is set to be a central obelisk supporting further exchange between the two countries. It is a crucial project on which both governments have long been working," said Sun.     The ambassador said nine Chinese central government departments and 22 local authorities would be involved in organizing more than100 events all over Italy, including performances of traditional Chinese musical bands, dances and operas. BEIJING, Dec. 10 -- China will extend stimulus measures in the automobile industry for one more year, with small adjustments, to further support the world's biggest and fastest-growing auto market.     The government announced the decision Wednesday after an executive meeting of the State Council chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao.     The stimulus package, which was due to expire at the end of this month, includes a 50 percent cut in the 10 percent purchase tax for cars with an engine capacity of, or less than, 1.6 liters and subsidies for trade-in cars. It will now be extended to Dec 31, 2010.     However, the purchase tax for smaller cars will be lifted from the current 5 percent to 7.5 percent of the total vehicle price.  Buyers examining a small car in an auto market in Nanjing. Most of the best-selling cars in China are smaller cars.     The association estimated that the stimulus measures boosted the sales of smaller cars by 2.6 million units this year.     Because of the favorable policy, sales of the battery and electric car pioneer BYD in the first 11 months surged 150.2 percent to 388,246 units. About two-thirds of the car sales were of the F3 model, a compact sedan that topped China's best-selling car list for seven months, with monthly sales surpassing 30,000 units, nearly double the figure for last year.     According to CAAM, China's auto production and sales almost doubled from figures a year ago to reach 1.39 million and 1.34 million units respectively in November.     Overall auto sales topped 12.23 million units in the first 11 months, up 42.39 percent from the same period last year.

COPENHAGEN, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said on Tuesday that China, a developing country, has taken important measures in reducing its emission of greenhouse gas.     "China has also taken quite important measures by cutting forty to forty-five percent of energy intensity by 2020," Ban said at a press conference on the sidelines of the UN climate change conference in Copenhagen.     Ban arrived here earlier on Tuesday to open a high-level segment of the conference, which entered its ninth day of negotiations on a new global deal to push forward the fight against climate change.     The UN chief said he was fully aware of particular challenges faced by developing countries, in particular poor countries, calling on rich countries to improve their commitments in climate financing.     The climate change negotiations were now in a critical but difficult situation as developed countries and developing countries remain divided on key issues, including climate financing.     Developed countries have been reluctant to provide financial support to help developing countries mitigate and adapt to climate change. So far, they only indicated to give 10 billion U.S. dollars annually in the three years between 2010 and 2012.     Ban said developed countries should go beyond the fast-start support and also address medium and long-term financing scaled up to needs.     "I have been urging that developed countries should begin discussing the medium and long term financial support packages," he said, calling on all countries to overcome national interests or interests of any particular groups.     "That would be one of the keys in bridging the gap between developed and developing countries," he added.     Speaking at the same press conference, Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said he was encouraged by China's move to set national targets of reducing greenhouse gas emission.     "I am very encouraged by the fact that China has proposed, at this stage, nationally binding targets for mitigation which deviates from business as usual," he said.     But he added China should translate those national targets into some kind of international language.

FUZHOU, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- Leaders of the Chinese mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) and Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) will hold talks in Taiwan's Taichung on Dec. 22, according to Thursday's preparatory meeting.     The two organizations are authorized by authorities in the mainland and Taiwan to handle cross-Strait issues.     According to a preliminary agreement, ARATS President Chen Yunlin and SEF Chairman Chiang Pin-kung will meet for the fourth round of talks since they resumed negotiations in June last year following a 10-year suspension.     Zheng Lizhong, standing vice president of the ARATS, and Kao Kung-lian, vice chairman and secretary general of the SEF, decided the ARATS delegation would visit the island between Dec. 21 and 25.     The agenda was agreed on during the preparatory meeting in Fuzhou, capital of southeastern Fujian Province, which faces Taiwan across the Taiwan Strait.     The agenda includes discussion of labor cooperation in the fishing industry, cooperation in the fields of inspection and quarantine of agricultural products and standard measurement authentication, avoidance of double taxation and boosting taxation cooperation.     The two organizations are scheduled to hold a symposium on Dec.23 to introduce the mainland investment to the island.     The ARATS delegation will also tour the Taichung City, the surrounding area and the Sun Moon Lake, and leave the island at noon of Dec. 25.     Zheng said talks between the ARATS and the SEF, which negotiate issues deeply concerned by people of both sides, were "remarkable symbolization of the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations."     He said it shows the two organizations respect each other and "treat each other as equals" in promoting cross-Strait economic cooperation and improving people's livelihood.     The talks were supported and welcomed by people from both sides, Zheng said, adding the upcoming fourth round of talks would take into consideration the desire of people on both sides and the development of cross-Strait relations.     The two sides also discussed the use of relief funds donated by the mainland to Taiwan to combat Typhoon Morakot in August.     The ARATS received 450 million yuan of relief funds and has already delivered one third of it to the SEF. The rest would be sent to the SEF next week, it said.     Both sides agreed that the funds would be used in rebuilding the island's damaged bridges, schools and public facilities.
