LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Downward trends in coronavirus cases and testing-positivity rates could allow Los Angeles County to move into the next tier of the state's economic-reopening matrix by sometime in October, according to the county's public health director, but pending Labor Day numbers could potentially thwart that move.The county is in the most restrictive, or "purple," level of the state's four-tier virus-tracking roadmap. The county already has a low enough seven-day average testing positivity rate -- around 3.2% -- to move to a less-restrictive tier, but average new case numbers are still too high, currently averaging 8.1 cases per 100,000 residents. The state threshold for advancing to the "red" tier is seven cases per 100,000.However, Public health director Barbara Ferrer said Wednesday numbers in all categories have been trending downward over the past six weeks following a spike seen after the Fourth of July holiday weekend."If we don't see a surge in cases and hospitalizations associated with activities over Labor Day and we continue to reduce our rate of community transmission over the weeks ahead, we could enter tier 2, which is a less restrictive tier, sometime in October," Ferrer said.Health officials have said repeatedly they will not consider any more business reopenings in the county until at least late September, after determining if virus cases and hospitalizations increase following the Labor Day holiday weekend -- the way they did after Memorial Day and the Fourth of July.If the county gets its average new case numbers below seven per 100,000 residents, and maintains that level for two weeks, the county will be able to move into the state's "red" tier. That would allow more businesses to reopen, including potentially movie theaters and gyms, as well as school campuses for in-person learning.Ferrer said the county is now seeing its lowest average testing- positivity rate of the pandemic."Last week, we saw the lowest positivity rate to date, at around 3.4%," she said. "This means that almost 97% of the tests that people took for COVID-19 ended up being negative. Just a month ago, in mid-August, this rate was around 5%. So we're happy to see the progress that we've made and we're very much hoping that this number continues to decrease."She again warned, however, that the impact of the Labor Day holiday weekend has yet to be borne out in case numbers, since the virus has a 14-day incubation period. She also said upcoming fall and winter holidays, including the start of Rosh Hashanah this weekend, could lead to setbacks if people become lax about social distancing and other preventive measures."The autumn and winter months are filled with special times that we all are looking forward to," she said. "There's many secular and religious holidays that we usually celebrate by spending time with our friends and extended family members. And the pandemic has been difficult and frustrating in many ways, including placing limits on how we can celebrate safely. I do encourage all of us to think now about how we might want to modify our plans so we can share the joy of the holidays while reducing the risk of transmitting a dangerous and sometimes deadly virus."She and the county's health services director, Dr. Christina Ghaly, urged people to get a flu shot, noting that as flu season arrives, people who contract both influenza and COVID-19 may be susceptible to severe illness.The county on Wednesday reported 31 coronavirus-related deaths, although one of those fatalities was actually announced Tuesday by health officials in Long Beach. Long Beach announced two additional deaths Wednesday afternoon. The total number of fatalities in the county stood at 6,305 as of Wednesday.The county also announced 1,148 newly confirmed cases, while Long Beach added 40 cases and Pasadena reported six, lifting the cumulative total since the start of the pandemic to 256,194.There were 804 people hospitalized due to COVID-19 in the county, up slightly from Tuesday. Ghaly noted that the sharp downward trend seen in hospitalizations over the past month appears to have slowed or leveled off. But hospitalization numbers till remained at dramatically lower levels than they were a month ago.Ghaly said overall testing numbers over the past week were down, thanks in part due to closures of some testing centers due to poor air quality caused by the region's wildfires. She said some testing sites have two-thirds of their appointment slots available, so she encouraged anyone with symptoms of the coronavirus or who thinks they may have been exposed to get tested. 4630

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Los Angeles County reported 12,731 new cases of COVID-19 and 29 additional deaths Sunday, as the number of county residents hospitalized with the coronavirus surpassed 4,000 for the first time.The new numbers bring the county's totals to 525,486 cases and 8,298 fatalities since the pandemic began.The number of hospitalizations rose to 4,009, an increase from 3,850 on Saturday, and 21% were in intensive care units."Our daily case numbers are unlike any we have ever seen in our county and reflect extraordinarily high rates of community transmission; activities we were able to do just a few weeks back, now present far too much risk for virus transmission," the Los Angeles County Health Department said Saturday.Last week was record-shattering by all key public health indicators. A month ago, the five-day average of cases was 2,134: On Saturday it was 10,034 -- an increase of 370%. The five-day average of deaths one month ago, was 12: It was 62 as of Saturday. During that same span of time, hospitalizations increased by more than 300%."We're in uncharted territory at this point," county Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said. "We're seeing daily numbers of cases and hospitalizations that we've not experienced and frankly did not anticipate. Our intensive care unit capacity continues to drop. We're on a very dangerous track to seeing unprecedented and catastrophic suffering and death here in L.A. County if we can't stop the surge. And in order to stop this very dangerous surge, today I'm making a request to everyone in L.A. County to stay home as much as possible."Ferrer said if current trends continue, the number of coronavirus patients hospitalized and in intensive care will double in two weeks.Ferrer said cases were already trending upward in the county prior to Thanksgiving, prompting the county to cut off outdoor dining at restaurants, but the current dramatic surge in cases is directly attributable to gatherings and travel that occurred over the holiday in spite of public health warnings, creating a surge on top of a surge.And if another surge from Christmas compounds matters, the situation at hospitals "could become catastrophic," she said.Dwindling ICU capacity prompted the state to impose a regional stay at home order for the 11-county Southern California region last week. The order was triggered when overall ICU capacity dropped below 15%. Entertainment production -- including professional sports -- would be allowed to continue without live audiences.The order will remain in effect until at least Dec. 28.Officials are hoping for relief from the arrival of the first coronavirus vaccine, which began shipping out from a Michigan facility on Sunday. Los Angeles County expects to receive nearly 83,000 doses of the vaccine this week, with the initial doses distributed to 83 acute-care hospitals for administration to critical frontline workers."Los Angeles County is working with a variety of partners around the county in storing and housing the vaccine," the county's health department said Sunday. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Los Angeles County public health officials announced Friday the county's first known death of a person stemming from the use of e-cigarettes, or vaping -- the fourth such death nationwide. Dr. Muntu Davis, the county's health officer, said the patient was an ``older adult who had chronic underlying health conditions,'' but vaping is considered the probable cause of death. He declined to give the patient's exact age, but said the person was over 55. Public health officials said there have been a total of 12 Los Angeles County cases of illnesses stemming from e-cigarettes, with the illness dubbed vaping-associated pulmonary injury, or VAPI. One of those 12 cases was the person who died. Authorities declined to say if the other 11 patients were still hospitalized. Health officials declined to specify exactly what type of vaping product the person used. Davis stressed that ``it is not clear at this time if there is a specific product or device'' leading to the illnesses. He said that in all but one of the 12 county cases, the patients had a ``history of using a cannabis or marijuana-type product,'' notably THC, the active chemical in marijuana. Echoing a warning issued Friday morning by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Barbara Ferrer, director of the county Department of Public Health, urged residents ``to stop vaping now until further information about what is causing lung damage and deaths can be understood.'' ``The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health takes this threat seriously and today we're issuing a warning to all residents about the use of these devices as potentially harmful to proper lung function,'' Ferrer said. The Los Angeles County death is the fourth connected to vaping nationally. Authorities in Indiana on Friday morning announced a vaping-related death, and deaths were previously reported in Illinois and Oregon. CDC officials said an investigation into vaping-related cases nationwide found ``clinical similarities among those affected.'' ``We are committed to finding out what is making people sick,'' CDC director Dr. Robert R. Redfield said in a statement. ``All available information is being carefully analyzed, and these initial findings are helping us narrow the focus of our investigation and get us closer to the answers needed to save lives.'' According to the CDC, possible vaping-related illnesses have been reported in more than 25 states. ``While this investigation is ongoing, people should consider not using e-cigarette products,'' according to a CDC statement. ``People who do use e-cigarette products should monitor themselves for symptoms -- e.g., cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever -- and promptly seek medical attention for any health concerns. Regardless of the ongoing investigation, people who use e-cigarette products should not buy these products off the street and should not modify e-cigarette products or add any substances that are not intended by the manufacturer. E-cigarette products should never be used by youth, young adults, pregnant women, or adults who do not currently use tobacco products.'' Davis said the county has been receiving reports since Aug. 14 of ``people experiencing severe and sudden lung disease after having a history of vaping.'' LOS ANGELES (KGTV) - A Los Angeles Fire Department swift water rescue team made a daring rescue in fast-moving water Wednesday. A man was stranded in the Los Angeles River at Atwater Village as a storm moved through, creating rapids in the normally driver riverbed. The firefighter who first made it to the man in a boat had to turn back due to the difficult position. A rescue swimmer joined the boat pilot and saved the man. The man was evaluated by paramedics. There was no immediate word on his condition. 517
