BEIJING, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- China's Supreme People's Court (SPC) has urged more efforts to clear the backlog of cases as a campaign to complete long-delayed verdicts had seen positive results.Various local departments were urged to be "fully aware" of the importance of the speedy execution of court orders and tackling the backlog of cases, said a statement released Tuesday after a meeting on backlogged cases.The meeting was jointly held by the Political and Legal Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the SPC.Statistics cited in the statement show that since a campaign on clearing backlogged cases started in November 2008, long-delayed verdicts for more than 333,000 property cases had been completed.In addition, more than 3 million cases not involving properties had also been cleared.The two organizations urged police, banks, financial administrative departments, tax departments and other units that might be involved in case execution to fully support and coordinate the enforcement of court orders.The statement also called for harsher punishments and restrictions in real estate, credit rating and other fields for defendants who refused to follow court orders."The campaign is in accordance with the people's interests... and will have positive effects on promoting social harmony and stability," said Wang Lequan, deputy secretary of the Political and Legal Affairs Commission, at the meeting.

HUZHONG, Heilongjiang, July 1 (Xinhua) -- More than 20,000 firemen are battling lighting-triggered forest fires in northeast China as continuous hot weather undermines their efforts, forest fire prevention authorities said.The fire, spotted Saturday, continued to spread Wednesday due to high temperatures after having weakened overnight, said Sun Zhagen, deputy director of China's National Forest Fire Prevention Headquarters.The forest fire first occurred in a part of the Greater Hinggan Mountains in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and then extended to the neighboring Heilongjiang Province.Rescuers were still struggling to put out the fire at more than 30 sites in the two regions, said a spokesman with the fire fighting headquarters at Huzhong, a major fire site.Further, another 6,000 fire fighters and additional equipment would be sent to control the fire in Heilongjiang, said the spokesman."As it is too hot to get close to the scene to put out the fire, we have to build fire barriers during the day and battle the blaze at night," said Pang Zhiqiang, a forest policeman.Sparks are being buried under the burnt debris of wood, often as deep as 30 cm and easily set on fire again by wind, said rescuers at Huzhong District."We felt thirsty, dizzy and had trouble breathing after staying in the burnt forest for just 10 minutes", one fireman said.Each of the rescuers, carrying about 25 kg of equipment on his back, could only carry four bottles of drinking water, a rescuer with the Heilongjiang forestry police force told a Xinhua reporter. "If the bottle water is not enough, we drink the river water, though there are worms in it."Some thirsty fire fighters said they even dug into the ground and breathed in the moisture. Also, many rescuers have become exhausted after remaining awake and working for four days.Temperatures in the Greater Hinggan Mountains Region have been hovering over 37 degrees Celsius recently and seven counties and districts have witnessed record-high temperatures, said Na Jihai, chief of the Heilongjiang Provincial Meteorological Bureau.Temperatures in Huzhong District hit 39.7 degrees Celsius Saturday, Na said.Fire-control experts in Inner Mongolia also said such an extremely-hot weather was rarely seen over the past six decades.The two regions have dispatched three aircraft and 10 cloud seeding rockets to conduct artificial precipitation operations, according to local meteorological departments.The dry and hot weather will continue for the next three days, but a light rain is forecast for Thursday, according to the National Meteorological Center of China Meteorological Administration."This is a battle between human beings and nature. JILIN, Jilin Province, July 29 (Xinhua) -- About 3,000 barrels filled with chemicals have been swept into a major river in northeast China's Jilin Province, thousands more than originally thought, authorities said Thursday.Another 4,000 empty barrels have also entered the river, officials said at a press conference Thursday morning.On Wednesday, authorities said around 1,000 barrels had entered the Songhuajiang River in Jilin City.Barrels were spotted in the river Wednesday, but it is not known when they entered the waterway.The barrels first entered the Wende River and then flowed into the Songhuajiang River, after floods hit the storage facilities of two chemical factories -- Jilin Xinyaqiang Biochem Co. Ltd. and Jilin Zhongxin Group.Each chemical-filled barrel contains about 170 kilograms of chemicals.Of the 3,000 chemical-filled barrels, about 2,500 barrels contain trimethyl chloro silicane -- a colorless flammable liquid with a pungent odor -- while 500 contain hexamethyl disilazane -- a colorless liquid with a pungent odor.Officials said emergency workers and soldiers are rushing to retrieve the barrels. Workers are collecting the barrels at eight points on the river. About 400 have been recovered so far.Seven stations have been established to monitor water contamination.

GONGSHAN, Yunnan, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers are racing to search for 80 people still missing three days after rain-triggered mudslides hit a remote mountain town in southwest China's Yunnan Province, killing at least 12.By 7 p.m. Friday, rescuers had recovered six more bodies, bringing the death toll to 12, said Hou Xinrong, deputy head of the Drung-Nu Autonomous County of Gongshan, which administers Puladi Township where the mudslides occurred.Hampered by the mountain terrain and persistent rainfall, the rescue efforts had been progressing slowly, Hou said. "Excavators can't proceed to the site and mountain torrents could be triggered at any time due to the downpours."Most of the missing people are employees of the Yujin Iron Mine and residents of Puladi, where the mudslides struck at about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.Around Friday noon, a Xinhua reporter saw several soldiers digging in the debris with spades, hoes and sometimes their bare hands in hardest-hit Litoudi Village."We've found a body here, but it was stuck in the mud. We have to be gentle to ensure the integrity of the body," said Yang Pingang, an officer with the Yunnan Provincial Military Area Command. "We want to show our respects to the deceased."
