(KGTV) - Students in a UC San Diego computer science course are still trying to understand why someone put a racial slur in their study guide dozens of times.The CSE 134B midterm study guide was a collaborative effort among the students. Only those in the class had access to it and could edit it anonymously.The night before the exam, students like Raymond Arevalo were shocked to see the n-word in it 85 times."I got on the study guide and saw the instance of the n-word, and then I noticed another instance," said Arevalo. "I was really shocked and kind of mad because this wasn't the first time this has happened before in other classes I've been."Arevalo says he has experienced a negative culture in the computer science program at the school. He says far too often minorities and women are targeted in the male-dominated field.He shared images of the defaced midterm online, hoping to raise awareness of the problems he believes exist."People continue to do these things knowing that they won't get in trouble, and it's like a small joke to them, if the person were to get in trouble that would be nice," said Arevalo.The story was first reported in The Triton, an independent, student-run news source. LAKE HUGHES (CNS) - A fire burning near the Lake Hughes area was 12% contained but experienced a "flare up" due to extreme heat Friday afternoon after already scorching 11,637 acres, destroying five structures and threatening more over the last three days."There is a bit of a flare up this afternoon, but we don't really have a ton of information of where that is yet because it's going on right now," a U.S. Forest Service official told City News Service late Friday afternoon.Shortly after 5:30 p.m. Friday, additional evacuations were ordered for the Fairmont area east of Lancaster, where residents were told to evacuate from north of Avenue D/Highway 138, south of Avenue A, west of 150th Street West and east of 200th Street West, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Palmdale Station."Fire will continue to grow and threaten the surrounding communities of Lake Hughes, Leona Valley, Lake Elizabeth, Pine Canyon, Quail Lake, Three Points, Historic Ridge Route and Inventoried Roadless Areas, fire officials said during a late-morning update Friday. (KGTV) - A woman in Lakeside has set up a cabinet full of "Goodies to Share" for homeless people living near Cactus Park.Barbara DeYoung says she got the idea from the "Little Free Libraries" she sees in her neighbors' yards."You just go very freely and get something. It's just people sharing with you," she says. "It's a very nice feeling, and I thought for sure they would love that."She set up the cabinet near the San Vincente Creek that runs behind Cactus Park, an area where several homeless people have set up encampments."I felt these are wonderful human beings. But they have problems. They have situations they can't control," DeYoung explains. "But they can read a book in the evening. They can play games, whatever they need to do."Rather than filling the cabinet with food, DeYoung stocks it with comfort items like books, blankets, wipes, playing cards, and other things that aren't usually available to homeless people at shelters or service offices.DeYoung says it's about feeding their souls and showing them respect and love, rather than just handing them food.The cabinet has already become a hit. DeYoung had to restock it just a few days after she first set it up. And just a few minutes after she refilled the cabinet, our cameras caught a man coming up from the creek bed to grab some wipes out of it.He asked not to be identified but says it feels good to know that people care.Meanwhile, DeYoung doesn't believe it will attract more homeless people to the area, but it will make life more bearable for the ones already there."I don't think boxes of raisins are going to bring armies of people here," she says. Like countless other Americans stuck at home during COVID-19, Steven Clark found himself searching for purpose. The 43-year-old man eventually found it in the basement of his century-old home, making desks for students in need.Woodworking is not Clark's full-time job, but it is where he finds himself between Zoom calls and on weekends. Months into the pandemic, Clark knew he had the tools to do something, and eventually, phone calls to local charities revealed the answer: families in Massachusetts, where Clark lives, were in desperate need of desks."It just seemed like an alignment of stars to say, 'Hey, why don’t we build decks, because it seems like there’s a real need for that,'" he explained.Virtual learning and the pandemic have revealed that nearly 9.4 million kids don't have access to the internet. Nationwide, 4.4 million kids don't have access to a computer. But there is no telling just how many kids don't have a desk of their own at home, especially in families who have recently come out of homelessness."I think we can all think back to when we were kids and had something that was ours," Clark said about the need for desks.As the executive director of Furnishing Hope of Massachusetts, Suzy Palitz has plenty of furniture ready to be deployed to families in need, but the one item they need the most right now though are desks."Your bed is to sleep on. your desk is to work at. There are certain things you do in those places and it’s also a way to keep organized," Palitz said.This nonprofit helps families who have just transitioned out of homeless shelters. Most kids don't have a bed to sleep on, let alone a desk to do schoolwork on. The need has become even more critical with students across the country learning virtually at home."It’s a place that’s steady, that they can focus in," she added.The idea has taken off. So far, with the help of 14 other families, Clark and his helpers have delivered five desks to kids in need with another 25 on the way and the funding to make 10 more. There's nothing fancy about the desks.
