Getting into an Ivy League or top ten university is typically extremely competitive and difficult, but the effects of the pandemic may be making it easier for some to now get into their dream school.Part of the reason for this is that enrollment is down at college campuses across the country.One poll, conducted by College Reaction and Axios, shows roughly 22 percent of college students have decided to take a gap year. That equates to about 4 million fewer college students enrolled this academic year.“Right now, colleges, as you have seen, they are desperate for tuition dollars,” said Christopher Rim, CEO of Command Education, a company that helps students get into competitive colleges. "Six out of 10 colleges want to fill their classes.”For months now, Rim has seen how the pandemic is making it much easier for students to get into some highly-competitive schools.“We had students who were waitlisted at top 10 and top 15 universities, and in a typical year, they would not have been getting in,” said Rim. “In June or July, they were getting offers of admissions, saying they are off the waitlist.”Rim says it’s because students have been deferring enrollment or taking a gap year.The gap-year trend and resulting reduced competition is also leading to a trend in college transfers. Rim’s company has had three to four times as many college students contact them this year, looking for help with a transfer.“We are having all of these transfer students reach out to us and say, ‘You know what? I want to transfer. This is the time to transfer. I’ll have the best shot. If my dream school was Georgetown or if my dream school was Yale, what do I need to do to stand out and get in because these schools also need students?’” said Rim.While current transfer students may have less competition, and thus, a better shot at getting into their preferred schools, high school seniors should prepare for this trend to reverse when they are applying for admissions in the fall of 2021.“For the current students right now, who are applying to colleges and they are seniors in high school, they are going to have the most difficult time,” said Rim. “Because all the students who took the gap year have taken those spots. (AP) — The man who killed four people and wounded two others in random stabbings across two Southern California cities is a gang member with a violent criminal record who had served time in prison, authorities said Thursday.Zachary Castaneda "could have injured or killed many other people" had he not been arrested Wednesday while carrying out attacks and robberies during the two-hour wave of violence that began in Garden Grove, the city's police Chief Tom DaRe said.It wasn't immediately known if Castaneda, 33, had a lawyer who could speak on his behalf. He was scheduled to be arraigned Friday.Castaneda was taken into custody when he walked out of a convenience store in the neighboring city of Santa Ana, dropping a knife and a gun he had taken from a security guard he had just killed, police said. The suspect was covered in blood, DaRe said.Castaneda was kept in restraints as detectives tried to interview him, the chief said at a press conference."He remained violent with us through the night," DaRe said. "He never told us why he did this."Castaneda has a conviction for possession of meth for sale while armed with an assault rifle, DaRe said. High school sports programs around the country are trying to figure out what the fall season will look like. In California, the sports season will be delayed until December or January. So, what does that mean for students hoping to play in college?Julian Jenkins is a Senior Regional Recruiting Director for Next College Student Athlete, the largest athletic recruiting network in the world. “So it puts you in a pickle. 'How am I going to get recruited? My son is not playing for these 3-4 months, how is he or she in her sport gonna get recruited' and that’s a big question," said Jenkins.In baseball, a pickle is when a base runner is caught between two players throwing the ball back and forth. Off the field, it's students who are now trapped in the stands.“Our number one job is to help them fill their roster spots every year with potential candidates for these opportunities," Jenkins said.They work with college and high school coaches, club coaches, athletic administrators and families. They were online before the pandemic and have been around 20 years. “College coaches don’t have endless time. They’d love to be everywhere at all times, they’d love to go to every single high school game, every club tournament, but they can’t be, so they come to our website and reach out directly to our people and say 'I need an outsider hitter in volleyball, I need a quarterback in football.'"Before Covid-19, recruiters from NCSA were at every live sports event you can think of. More than 500 last year. Now, there's lots of layers to what happens next, as regions try to figure out what the sports season looks like. A lot of them have game video, but in sports like baseball, soccer, softball, they have skills video and some experience they can share with college coaches,” Jenkins said.California's sports season might be delayed but other states aren't at this point. Which means the push to get ahead and the competition to get to that next level just got more intense. “The power of technology is very powerful and there’s a big technology gap out there. But we’re encouraged by students using their cell phones and filming themselves in their workouts and we cannot minimize the positive power of coaches,” Jenkins added.As for developing players who may or may not have been discovered, Jenkins stresses training and practice.“Not necessarily the type where you have the whole team there, you’re giving them the platform. We have Zoom and Microsoft as opportunities to connect, where coaches are saying this is your workout,” she explained.Colleges are still filling their rosters and NCSA is still getting contacted about athletes. Health officials nationwide – and in the Kansas City metro – are warning about heart condition in recovering COVID-19 patients that could have more of an effect on athletes.Myocarditis, which inflames the heart muscle, is being called the "breaking news" of coronavirus."[Myocarditis] can lead to a thinning and distension of the heart and a lack of function in the heart," said Dr. Steve Stites, chief medical officer at the University of Kansas Health System, "And even to heart failure and the need for a heart transplant and bad heart rhythms that can lead to death."The condition could be exacerbated by the type of exercise athletes are used to."In college athletics, we don't know the outcome of myocarditis," Stites said. "We don't know that a high impact sport could worsen the damage to the heart. We don't know what high-intensity exercise might be doing to a heart that's already slightly inflamed.
