BEIJING, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- China said Thursday it would consider more assistance to quake-hit Haiti and hoped the United Nations could coordinate the post-quake reconstruction."We will continue to make every effort to participate in disaster relief and reconstruction," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu at a regular news briefing. After a 7.3-magnitude earthquake devastated Haiti on Jan.12, China sent a 60-strong search and rescue team to Port-Au-Prince, capital of the Caribbean nation, and the Red Cross Society of China donated 1 million U.S. dollars in emergency aid.China also decided to send emergency humanitarian aid worth 30 million yuan (4.41 million U.S. dollars) to Haiti.Ma said the reconstruction would be arduous and the United Nations should give full play to its advantage by guiding and coordinating aid efforts from all sides."China supports the United Nations playing its due role in time to ensure an early launch of reconstruction," said Ma.Ma said whether China would send peace-keeping troops to Haiti would rest on UN arrangements. The UN Security Council endorsed Tuesday a proposal to send 3,500 more peacekeepers to Haiti to support "the immediate recovery, reconstruction and stability efforts."Eight Chinese peacekeeping police officers were killed in the quake. Four of them were officers of China's 125-member peacekeeping force in Haiti, and the rest were part of a team sent by the Ministry of Public Security to Haiti for peacekeeping consultations.China has sent four extra peace-keeping police officers to Haiti."We hope relevant countries could continue to enhance coordination and make joint efforts to help the Haitian people overcome difficulties and rebuild their homes at an early date," said Ma.

GENEVA, March 16 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese diplomat on Tuesday called for international cooperation in dealing with global challenges such as economic crisis, climate change and the shortage of energy and resources."The impact of the global economic crisis is still with us, while global challenges such as climate change, energy and resources, public health security have become increasingly prominent," said He Yafei, China's new ambassador to the United Nations Office in Geneva."Collective efforts are essential, under the present new circumstances, if the above global problems are to be put behind us. No country can do it alone," He told a reception marking his assumption of office.According to the ambassador, China has always stood for intensified international cooperation to meet global challenges."Over the past year, China has actively participated in international cooperation to address international financial crisis and climate change, and played a unique and constructive role in a series of major international conferences," he told diplomats and journalists at the reception. He added that China had all along championed multilateralism, and the country had been resolute in supporting the positive role of the United Nations in maintaining world peace and security, promoting common development and safeguarding human rights.

SHANGHAI, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- State Councilor Meng Jianzhu on Sunday called on the armed police to enhance capacities in tackling emergencies and terrorist attacks so as to ensure a safe World Expo.Meng, also Minister of Public Security and first political commissar of the Chinese People's Armed Police Force, made the remarks while watching a drill conducted by the armed police in the World Expo host city Shanghai.Armed police should focus their work on coping with complicated situations at any time and effectively bring under control all sorts of complexities, he said.Armed police should be rigorous, fair and civilized when enforcing the law, and at the same time be rational, even-tempered and conform to their professional standards, Meng said.China's armed police force had made contributions to safeguarding public safety during the 2008 Beijing Olympics and celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China last year, he said. The World Expo, to be hosted by China for the first time, is scheduled for May 1 to Oct. 31. To date, at least 192 countries and 50 international organizations have confirmed their participation in the global feast that will present the latest advances of architecture and engineering worldwide.

BEIJING, March 10 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government will adopt stricter measures to boost energy conservation this year to meet the goal set by an important five-year plan, Xie Zhenhua, vice minister of the National Development and Reform Commission, said Wednesday."It's the last and decisive year for us to realize the goals set by our country's 11th Five-Year Plan," Xie said at a press conference on the sidelines of the annual session of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature."The current energy conservation situation lags far behind the goal set in our plan and our task is still formidable," said Xie, one of China's leading negotiators for climate change talks.Under the 11th Five-Year Plan ending this year, China pledged to cut energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) by 20 percent, or four percent each year, but consumption fell by a margin much smaller than the set target during the past four years. The per unit GDP energy consumption fell only 14.38 percent from the 2005 level.Xie said the Chinese government will enact a series of measures this year to boost energy conservation, including the introduction of an accountability mechanism for provincial governments and tight control of projects of high energy consumption and high pollution.China announced in November it aimed to reduce the intensity of carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP in 2020 by 40 to 45 percent compared with 2005 levels.

BEIJING, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Health (MOH) on Sunday released an inclusive list of illustrations on medicine use as guidance for doctors in writing prescriptions. It is the first state-level list of its kind in the country. The list illustrates what each kind of medicine should be used for, but it is not mandatory. Medicines on the list include all those on the National Basic Medicine Catalogue and the Catalogue of Drugs for Basic National Medical Insurance, and some other frequently used medicine, the ministry said.Cao Guirong, president of the Chinese Hospital Association, said at the release ceremony that compilation of the list borrowed the experience of developed countries and the World Health Organization (WHO) while taking into account China's geographic features and clinical therapeutic habits. It took two years for more than 100 domestic medical and pharmaceutical experts to complete the list, Cao said. It would be handed out to hospitals nationwide within the next few days in an effort to promote better medical service.
