SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Many of us have faced battles in 2020 we never imagined we would meet. But few have had to endure the hurdles of Bryce Olson."I started to come to terms with my own mortality," said Olson in November of 2018. "I didn't even think I would see my kid get out of elementary school, and I started losing hope."We have been following Bryce Olson's story for over two years. We profiled the Oregon man because he had been traveling to San Diego for research and precision therapies for his Stage 4 Metastatic Prostate Cancer. And then the pandemic hit."It makes me feel that I'm a sitting duck," added Olson back in March.Our Michael Chen revisited Olson nine months ago at the beginning of the pandemic. COVID-19 cases were on the rise, and Olson had to weigh the risk of traveling with a weak immune system or slowly dying without his treatment."It was kind of this Sophie's Choice issue of, you know I might die of cancer in the long term, but gosh COVID could kill me in the short term," said Olson just last week.But instead, something remarkable happened when Olson's story started spreading."And then your piece aired, and an amazing individual, super generous, kind individual saw that, and he had access to private transportation," said Olson with a smile.That good Samaritan was co-founder and former CEO of Sprouts, Shon Boney. He provided a private plane so Bryce could fly into San Diego for his treatments until he was healthy enough to fly commercially."He got me out of my shell," added Olson. "He got me back into San Diego, comfortable going into the hospital with my N95 mask and he increased my confidence in being able to do this."The timing was perfect. Olson couldn't spare another missed treatment. The cancer had spread to his spine, and within weeks he would have been unable to walk. But that was just the beginning of his renewed hope. WIRED then picked up Olson's story, which has led to even more attention, a consortium of his case study and the potential for revolutionary experimental therapies through Research to the People benefiting not just Olson but millions of other cancer patients."What's happened post WIRED is I've got all these researchers, scientists, and medical professionals that want to help me take this amazing set of data," added Olson. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In celebration of the National Parks Service's 103rd birthday, locals can enjoy the country's spectacular national parks for free.On Sunday, Aug. 25, NPS will celebrate its birthday by granting free admission to park goers across the country. The promotion is one of five "fee-free" days throughout the year. The next free admission days at Sept. 28 for National Public Lands Day and Nov. 11 in honor of Veterans Day.In San Diego, residents can enjoy free entrance to Cabrillo National Monument at the tip of Point Loma. As an added bonus, living history re-enactors will be in attendance to walk guests through the Age of Exploration.Films are also shown daily at the monument covering Cabrillo, the lighthouse, and nearby aquatic life. Guests can explore Cabrillo monument, nearby Old Point Loma Lighthouse, check out native plants, or trek down a trail to tide pools along the coast. 914

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Long wait times have always been a problem at the DMV, the way to avoid that was to make an appointment online to skip the long lines. For people needing to renew their license like Debby Herscovitz, they had to plans months in advance, “I went online, booked an appointment, but I had no idea it was going to be in March”. Herscovitz got a notification from the DMV in the mail to renew her license back in December and immediately tried to make an appointment. She tells us the first available time slot was at the end of March, “I absolutely had no idea it was going to take that long”. A DMV representative tells 10News, drivers are trying to avoid the hours long line at the DMV by making an appointment online. Because so many people are scheduling appointments, the appointments are filling up faster than ever before. For Herscovitz, her appointment would have taken a total of 15 minutes to get her Real ID, however she didn’t have all the necessary documents. The DMV tells 10News to help people adjust to the new requirements and be prepared for their appointments they have a video people can watch before they make the trip in. Despite having to plan months in advance, the DMV says it’s still the best idea to schedule an appointment online before heading to a nearby office. Tips to keep in mind that could help with the scheduling process: don’t rule out nearby offices because some might not be as busy as others. Also, continue to check back online to see if any cancellations were made. Here in San Diego, there are also a few offices with extended hours and that are open on Saturdays.
