SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Visitors are more than happy to rave about San Diego, according to a new travel survey.San Diego was considered one of America's best big cities, ranking ahead of New York City, in Conde Nast Traveler's 32nd annual Reader's Choice awards. The travel magazine surveyed 600,000 voters for their favorite cities in the U.S., adding more weight to San Diego's consideration.Readers celebrated America's Finest City for the region's food scene (which seems to be getting more and more recognition) and amusements for visitors of all ages. RELATED: Seven secret spots in San Diego to visit this summerOr as Conde Nast puts it: "San Diego has officially stepped out from the shadow of its big sister due north, earning world-class destination status that goes well beyond the waves."Tourist attractions are plentiful throughout San Diego County, with amusements in North County like the San Diego Zoo Safari Park and Legoland California down to the South Bay for Living Coast Discovery Center and Aquatica SeaWorld's Waterpark.Everywhere in between, the county's coastline offers more fun on the water or on land from Oceanside to Chula Vista. There is a reason San Diego is among the top cities for a staycation, with about 7% of hotel rooms purchased by locals looking to feel far from home.RELATED: 10 places to experience San Diego's nightlifeWhen it comes to in-county fun — and for free — there's no better way to explore than hiking through San Diego. This year, park rangers recommend visiting San Elijo Ecological Reserve, Flinn Springs County Park, and El Capitan County Preserve for a tranquil view of the East County.Rounding out the top five on the list were Washington, D.C. (5th); New Orleans, La.; Boston, Mass.; Minneapolis, Minn.; and Chicago, Ill. 1786

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two San Diego brothers are renewing their push for a Holocaust memorial along the Embarcadero, but the Port of San Diego does not appear to be on board.Mark and Frank Powell, who are Jewish, want to install the memorial at Tuna Harbor, just steps from the U.S.S. Midway Museum and the popular Unconditional Surrender kissing statue. The monument depicts U.S. Soldiers liberating Nazi concentration camps at the end of World War II, with general Dwight D. Eisenhower looking on. The Powells are bringing the idea back to the Port in light of the recent Poway Chabad shooting and overall increase in anti-Semitic incidents. RELATED: Coronado Bridge to light up this week as part of lighting study"It's to educate students, parents, tourists, the public on genocide, the Holocaust and ways to prevent this from happening," Mark Powell said. In 2017, the Powells had the finances lined up, and support from more than a dozen politicians. They had letters from Democratic Congressman Scott Peters, Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter and San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer. But the Port's Public Art committee rejected the proposal in an 8-0 vote. In a statement Friday, Port Chairman Gary Bonelli said there were a number of issues with the proposal."No one on the Committee questioned the importance of the proposed WWII Military Liberation Monument, but Committee members felt that this particular proposal neither inspired nor caused one to contemplate the subject matter," Bonelli said. Mark Powell said that's precisely why it's the right location. "Not everything is going to be butterflies and roses," he said. "We have to teach our kids that life is hard and life is a struggle."The port added that it's not currently accepting new art proposals for the Embarcadero because of redevelopment. A spokeswoman for the agency says the Powells can re-submit their monument proposal if there are significant changes after their prior feedback. They have until January 2020 to do so. 2298

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two inmate deaths in San Diego detention facilities this year are being attributed to drug overdoses and called accidental. The first occurred on July 20 at the San Diego Central Jail, where Michael Hossfeld, 41, was found unresponsive in his cell, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department. Deputies began life-saving measures and Hossfeld was taken to a nearby hospital, where he remained in a coma and on life support until Aug. 3.The county medical examiner this week determined Hossfeld had died from anoxic encephalopathy due to acute fentanyl toxicity and ruled his death an accident.Hossfeld had been in custody for 691 days and was charged with multiple crimes, including robbery. On Aug. 26, deputies at George Bailey Detention Facility found Jose Sevilla, 39, unresponsive in his cell. Deputies began CPR, but he was pronounced dead shortly after he was found. The medical examiner report said that Sevilla died from acute heroin intoxication and his death was also deemed an accident.Sevilla had been in jail since May 30 on drug- and theft-related charges.SDSO did not provide any further information regarding the deaths.According to the Associated Press, there have been at least 13 in-custody deaths in San Diego jails this year. 1275

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While enjoying a moment at the park over the weekend, a Carlsbad family was on the receiving end of an act of kindness from a stranger. The family says they are now hoping to find that person to say thank you. After months of staying at home, the family was excited to spend a day at Buccaneer Park in Oceanside. Eleven-year-old Jacobi and 12-year-old Jordan couldn’t wait to get outside.“They’re too old of the playground area, the swings and things like that,” says mom Tamara Coronado. “They look forward to the open space, the grass area, and definitely the basketball courts.”But Coronado says park officials had not yet reinstalled the basketball hoops, something the boys were looking forward to. The kids were left to make up their own games. It caught the attention of one man.“Forty-five minutes to an hour later, he came back… with a crafting reef from Dollar Tree and a very small basketball that would fit inside.”The man used a power drill to attach the wreath to a tree to form a makeshift hoop so that the boys could play basketball.“All that he asked was that we leave the wreath and the ball in place so that after we left, other families could use it,” says Coronado. “But the fact that he went out of his way like he did was, I just couldn’t believe it.”The mom says even though a lot is going on around the country, she wants others to know there are still kind people in the world. The family didn’t get the man’s name, but they’re hoping to find him to say thank you.“He may have not thought twice about it, and hasn’t thought about it since, but he really touched me and my family.” 1632

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts from all over San Diego County honored our local veterans laid to rest at Greenwood Memorial Park on Saturday. They placed American flags at the gravesite of every fallen veteran at the cemetery. The event is done all over the country to teach the scouts about patriotism and community service. Also, teaching them about those who made the ultimate sacrifice.RELATED: Memorial Day services around San Diego this yearSince not all of the people laid to rest at Greenwood are veterans, the kids had to look at each gravesite before putting down their flags. The veterans remembered today were from different wars including WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.10News reporter Laura Acevedo was live on Facebook with the scouts as they placed flags on graves: 837
