COLLEGE EAST (CNS) - A 19-year-old man who was trying to sell one vehicle in the College East neighborhood ended up having another one stolen.The victim was trying to show a car, in the 5100 block of East Falls View Drive, to two men and a female suspect around 4 p.m. Saturday, but it wouldn't start.So he got his red 2007 Honda Civic, in order to give the for-sale car a boost.He left the keys in the Civic, and one of the supposed prospective buyers jumped into the driver's seat and started pulling away.The teenage victim tried to prevent the theft-in-progress by standing in front of his Honda.``The suspect pointed a black gun at the victim causing him to move out of the way and let the suspect take the car,'' Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department said.The female suspect followed the Civic in a gray BMW, Heims said. COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Scientists say an enormous chunk of Greenland's ice cap, estimated to be about 110 square kilometers (42.3 square miles), has broken off in the far northeastern Arctic. They see it as evidence of rapid climate change, which is leading to the disintegration of the Arctic's largest remaining ice shelf. The section broke off a 50-mile long fjord at the front end of the Northeast Greenland Ice Stream, where it flows off the land and into the ocean. One scientist says "we should be very concerned" about the ice loss. In August, a study showed that Greenland lost a record amount of ice during an extra warm 2019. 648

Crews at a construction site in Denver, Colorado, are working around the clock, trying to keep up with an increased demand by building more housing.“It’s getting really interesting out there isn’t it,” said Stephen Myers CEO at Thrive Home Builders.Myers says though the real estate market is booming across the country, an increased cost of lumber is cutting into builders’ profits.“The increase is ,000 to 12,000 per house,” he said of his current project. “And we’re concerned about the ultimate price impact for our buyers.”According to the National Association of Home Builders, the price of lumber has increased by 173% since mid-April to an all-time high in August.“Without a doubt, the housing prices will go up because lumber is a very important input of houses,” said Kishore Kulkarni, Ph.D. a professor of economics at MSU Denver.Kulkarni says there’s multiple reasons why lumber prices have skyrocketed during the last few months, including higher transportation costs, some lumber mills shutting down, low interest rates and more people looking to purchase homes during the pandemic.“The supply of lumber is having a lot of bottlenecks because of COVID-19,” he said,This is pushing up the price of a typical new home by more than ,000, according to the National Association of Home Builders.Back on the job site, Myers’ team is pulling out the blueprints and looking for ways to offset higher lumber prices.“Hopefully the lumber supply can rise to the occasion to meet the increased demand,” Myers said.While crews continue to frame new houses, experts predict the cost of lumber won’t level.So, for now, prices will continue going through the roof. 1676

CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) — Thousands of sailors left Naval Air Base Coronado Friday afternoon, to embark on a seven-month deployment to the Indo-Pacific Region. Its colossal presence is intimidating. Impressive. Indisputable.“We comprise the most mobile, most capable, and most lethal fighting force on the entire planet,” Captain Brett Crozier, Commanding Officer of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, said. But the strength of the ship isn’t in the hardware. It’s in the 6,000 sailors who will call it home for the next seven months. Friday is their farewell to their families. “Already I’ve been crying like all day,” Stephanie Hastings said. The young mother of two is saying goodbye to her husband, Christopher, for the first time. This is the 26-year-old’s first deployment. Emotions overcome her, even though her toddlers do not understand. “He [three-year-old Mason] doesn’t really know what’s going on. He said he wants to go to Target today. He doesn’t want to come here,” Hastings laughed. But long-time military wife Fama Nyassi has no tears. She and her two daughters are sending off their father, Ousom, for the fifth time. “Daddy is not around, but Mommy is here. I will take care of everything!” Nyassi said. For the next seven months, the sailors will travel to the Indo-Pacific region to provide maritime security and regional safety. For EMC Nyassi, it’s comforting to know that his wife has got his back at home. “I can’t thank her enough. She’s the rock of the family. I can’t thank her enough,” EMC Nyassi said. Those left behind say their strength comes from their love for their spouse and for their country. “I tell him all the time that I am really proud,” Hastings said of her husband. “So proud of him. He’s the hero of the family,” Nyassi said of her husband. CLEVELAND — Two residents in Cleveland's West 58th Street neighborhood suffered significant injuries while protecting neighborhood children from an Oct. 7 pit bull attack.Becky Barker and Jay Anderson responded after hearing the screams of children who were being chased by three pit bulls they said were part of a one-hour rampage in their neighborhood.Barker told WEWS the pit bulls had children trapped on top of a car that was parked in front of her home, and when she stepped out to help, the pit bulls bit her multiple times in three areas of her body."They could have killed me, they really could have, if they would kept ripping me open like they did," Barker said."The children were screaming, and the dogs are just like clawing up this ladies car to get at these kids," she said.Jay Anderson also suffered several dog bites on the backs of his legs and back.Anderson said he tried to use a screwdriver to fend-off the attacking dogs, but one of the dogs was able to disarm him."Just terrible, it was a horrible thing, kind of scary," Anderson said."So I turned around and looked at the dog that took my screwdriver, and a second one started attacking me" he said.Cleveland EMS, the fire department and the Cleveland dog warden responded to the scene.Residents told WEWS the owner of the dogs was cited and one of the pit bulls was confiscated.According to city law, the owner could be fined up to ,000, but Barker believes the irresponsible owner should face even tougher penalties."It isn't the breed of the animal, it's the owners of these animals that have them," Barker said."The owner of these dogs they should be held accountable, and really pay for what they did," she said.WEWS contacted the City of Cleveland about the case, but it said it couldn't comment on an ongoing investigation. 1854
