AURORA, Colo. — Three Aurora police officers under investigation for a photograph taken near the site where Elijah McClain struggled with officers were seen in the picture imitating the carotid hold used on McClain by police before the 23-year-old Black man died last August, two sources with knowledge of the situation told KMGH on Tuesday.Neither source had personally seen the photograph of the officers as of Tuesday afternoon, though they were aware of what the photograph showed.Aurora Interim Police Chief Vanessa Wilson on Monday night announced the officers were being investigated for a photograph but declined to say what the photograph showed.Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman on Tuesday tweeted that he was "deeply concerned over the facts surrounding the photographs," but Coffman also did not detail what was shown in the photographs.The officers were notified of their disciplines on Tuesday morning, the sources told KMGH, but the punishments were not yet public. Officers have a three-day period to appeal the discipline, the sources said.The picture depicting the involved officers was sent in a group text to other officers before it was reported to police officials, the sources said.Earlier Tuesday, Aurora police spokesperson Officer Matthew Longshore said the photos were reported to the department by a fellow Aurora officer, which the sources said occurred last Thursday. He said the police chief review board – comprised of the department’s three division chiefs and the deputy police chief – were reviewing the photos and will make a decision on whether, or how to, punish the officers.Longshore said that the officers could potentially be terminated depending on the review board’s decision. Ashland University in Ohio is offering a new ,000 scholarship to talented Fortnite players."Fortnite Battle Royale" will be offered in fall 2018 as part of the university's esports program.The AU esports team will be the first known program in the country to add the game to its official offerings. Head Coach Josh Buchanan is excited to add the popular game to the college's gaming titles."Fortnite appeals to both the core and casual gaming audience," said Buchanan in a news release. "We're excited to provide this platform for gamers who want to showcase their skills in a more competitive space."The team at Ashland will arrange four-player teams that practice regularly and compete together.Scholarships will be awarded to players based on skill level and academic requirements.The university plans to conduct open tryouts for Fortnite players next school year. Ashland already offers League of Legends, Overwatch, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Rocket League in their esports program. The coach hopes eventually other schools will for programs to set up collegiate leagues for the team to compete against.  1184

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Faculty and staff at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan are being trained to fight active shooters in a unique way – by using hockey pucks. University police are conducting the training sessions, which were organized by the OU Union and the American Association of University Professors, to improve classroom safety for all. The use of hockey pucks allows those vulnerable to an active shooter attack to fight back with something heavy that will also cause a distraction, according to OU Police Chief Mark Gordon. "Hockey pucks provide the ability to be carried in briefcases or backpacks, are not considered a weapon and will meet the goal of distracting the shooter,” Gordon said. The OU Union has distributed hockey pucks to 800 of its members and will distribute an additional 1,700 pucks to students. "Part of the strategy for fighting is you need to create a distraction to give yourself time as a group in a classroom to rush the gunman so you can get your hands on the gun and take it away from the shooter," Gordon said.Although police and organizers find the pucks to be a good solution to the threat of a mass shooting, some students on campus disagree."I found it, at first, absurd," said Adam Kalajian, a third-year student at OU. "What good will it do? I mean, there’s an armed person coming in, why would you chuck a puck at them? What’s it going to do? Nothing." Jacob Gora, a fifth-year senior, echoed the same sentiment. "If I was to give you a puck and I had a gun, would I be able to take you out easily?" Gora asked. "I mean, a puck isn’t going to distract me or stop me from shooting someone."According to a release, the pucks also serve a second purpose.
